Nordic Knives - Update

Obviously, paying for a new/mint knife and getting one that shows use is wrong, however, to echo what Will said:

Folks, there is only one, I repeat one high-end custom knife dealer who does not accept trades and only sells knives that come directly from the makers, and that is Neil Ostroff at True North Knives.

Every other custom knife dealer I am familiar with, at times, sells knives that were previously owned. Very few of them point it out, one dealer that comes to mind is Tom Lansing and Phillip Dos from Classic, as far as I can tell, they will usually tell you if something was preowned, saying something like: "pre-owned but excellent". But, again, the truth is, every major dealer I am familiar with, aside from TNK and Classic sells pre-owned knives and does not always point it out unless you ask, figuring that as long as it's mint and unused, it can be sold as new, usually, that works out fine, if they evaluate the knives properly, in some cases, for whatever reason, as happened here, it doesn't work so well, but don't single out Nordic though, if you decide to not do business with them because of it, you'll have to give up all the rest of the dealers too, Dave at Nordic strikes me as a prety honest guy, I have no doubt he will or would have refunded your $$$ in full, and probably refunded all shipping costs too if the knife was clearly used.

I think a lot of you would be surprised to find out how few of the knives dealers have on their websites actually came directly from the makers.

So, yes, buyer beware, but, also beware, it aint just Nordic doing this.

After thinking about this for a little bit I think I would first ask for a refund if the condition was bad or maybe a partial re imbersement for the percentage that I felt I'd been overcharged on. If this is an isolated incident I don't think I would have problems with Nordic if they made things right but if it became widespread I would have issue with it. Everyone is allowed to screw up occasionally. :) And I also agree with Meg in that a lot of dealers sell pre owned stuff but at least they mark it as such. NotDos seems to be a straight shooter whenever I deal with him, he always told me if the item was pre owned or not.

And I believe Dave @ Nordic is trying to remedy the situation currently. Let us know how it comes out though.

Having purchased dozens of knives from these various internet dealers, it has been my experience that you should be able to return any item for a full refund (less shipping) as long as you notify them within three days. In this case, I would argue that shipping should be picked up by Nordic. They shouldn't be selling a knife in that condition in the first place.

In America at least, it is federal law (I can't find it, maybe someone else can) that when you purchase an item through the mails, you have three days to decide on a return.

Any knife that is less than "new from the maker" should be clearly identifed as such - even if other knife dealers stand silent on the issue, it doesn't make it right. Think about it - if you were shelling out $4000 for a Loveless hunter, don't you think you would be pretty pissed if the blade had scratches and the leather sheath was dried up and cracked?

"Pre-owned" pretty much tells you what you need to know, and anything less than pristine should be so identified. The volume of knives that these dealers handle is not so great. Each and every knife should be fully inspected prior to sale.

In the case of a Sebenza - it is more clear. Since Nordic Knives is a Chris Reeve Knives - how are you supposed to know that some of them may not be direct from CRK? I don't think a CRK dealer should be selling used CRK knives without clearly stating the difference.

Hello again.

I have had two emails from Dave in Nordic. It's a very fair response. It was;

--------------------------------------------

Mark,

I sell literally thousands of knives each year, and sometimes details like this slip past me, leaving a customer short changed. I'm sorry this happened to you, and wish that you would return the knife to me for a full refund, including your return shipping costs. I've been in this business for over 25 years, and know that integrity is all we have, and I pride myself in our high level of it. Sorry this was a bad deal for you, but I hope we can work together in the future with better results.

Regards - Dave Harvey

THEN

Hi Mark,

Just noticed that you may want to send the knife to Anne for refurbishing. If you would prefer this over a refund, obviously I will take care of any and all expenes involved - just let me know what you would prefer to do.

Dave

---------------------------------------

I am not above accepting an honest apology. They do not label used knives as used - that is simple shop policy for them, I am still against this method of selling. (Especially with CRK who are generally not custom pieces) But, having said that, I really appreciate the offer of a full refund or the outlay in a full refurbishment, from Dave.

A proper outcome, amongst friends in the knife community (even if it takes a little push like this) must be acknowleged and respected. I am now content with the result.

Warm Regards

Mark.
