Normal 20CV behavior?

What a crazy experience. I was getting ready to drop a huge chunk of change on a Bark River and am glad I saw this. I am sorry that this happened to you.

Don't generalize from one issue, or you'll never be able to order from anywhere. Problems happen. So far my personal Bark River experience is 4 good blades, no lemons.

The problem isn't getting a lemon. The problem is Bark River consistently displays abysmal customer service when there are issues.

This doesn't change your current predicament at all but I had a very positive experience with BRK within the last year. I broke both handle scales off my Bravo, sent it in and they fixed it and gave it a tune-up. I added liners too but had to pay for those.

I'm confused by this whole thread. The vinegar soak doesn't seem to have created a patina, but cleaned the surface, as Bluntcut mentioned in an earlier post.

Do your stainless knives bubble in vinegar?

I agree I am a fan also. I hope this gets sorted out keep us posted

For what it's worth, there are also allegations this might go back all the way to the Blackjack days. See user Bladeandbarrell's posts:

I do not know how he is related to Blackjack and Mike Stewart, or how reliable his claims are. Again, there's a lot of information out there, you can make up your own mind.

I have no love for BRKT. However, you join this month and this thread plus all your other posts are a skillful set-up of the company. There is no science in your test and your reference point for comparison is hearsay.

You say you knew about BRK&T's history before you bought the knife, so if this isn't a set-up, any problem you have with this knife is...?

It's time this thread goes to GB&U.

If you actually had taken half a second of your time to take a glimpse at the GB&U, you wouldn't be posting this. I knew about some of BRKT's history. This pushed me to dig a lot deeper. All your other concerns have already been answered in the other thread.

I have no concerns, this dog and pony show is yours.

I agree though, this thread shouldn't be moved, but merged with your GB&U one.

I've contacted KSF and linked to this thread. The CS guy told me I should just contact Bark River, which is honestly something I'm not too comfortable doing after seeing how it often unfolds in the GBU. I'm a pretty quiet and non-confrontational guy by nature, and my spoken english is far from excellent, so I'm really not sure how a call with Mr Stewart would go down. Add to this that I don't live exactly close to the USA, as I'm sure you can infer from the label on my Heinz vinegar, and I feel this is gonna take quite a bit of time and effort to solve.

I guess depending on how this goes down, you'll see an update from me in GBU a couple months from now. I'll cross my fingers and hope for the best.

Thank you to all who contributed.

Just getting wind of this thread. It certainly looks to me like that is A2. I would guess it got marked incorrectly and didn't get caught. I am sorry about that. I talked to Josh about it today and he is talking to Bark River and will get back to you. No matter what, we will make sure you are taken care of.

I'm not sure what ponies and dogs have to do with this. I'm not too familiar with this idiom, but it doesn't sound particularly constructive. If you'd like to bring something worthwhile to this debacle, maybe instead you could build on your suggestion and explain in details how exactly one would go about "setting-up" a company like Bark River. I'd like to hear your argument and debate it to the best of my abilities.

I look forward to hearing the resolution of this.

Derrick of KSF mentioned in the GB&U thread, "same thing happened a few years ago on a Bravo"

I wonder if the previously linked thread about the 3V bravo is what he was referring to...

A2 (or some other carbon steel??) being sold as 3V or as 20CV or as any of the other steels supposedly proffered by BRKT, and this has been noticed in multiple instances. What about all those knives sold that were not "tested" as the OP did with his?
My understanding was that BRKT does as most knife companies do - permanently marking the tang or some other part of each knife to delineate steel-type. The OP commented that the thickness varies for the different versions of his particular knife. Yet it was marked 20CV ... so how many others?

I doubt we will ever know how many others like this knife there are. This will be treated as an isolated incident. *shrug*

This issue is pretty common then......Quality vs Quantity Bark river.

I just got to the office; needless to say I'm a little bit sad to see how the GB&U devolved. Thank you to the mods for locking it.

I just want to say that KSF is handling the issue like the great company most of us here have come to know and love. I will be in contact with them privately and once everything is taken care of, will follow on my word and share how things unfolded with the rest of you.

One more thing. I'm posting this picture, not to drive my point home further, but to show people that if I take the time to write something down on this forum and post it, I follow on it. Acts of God notwithstanding, I will be back in a few days/weeks/months and settle this whole issue for good.

Thank you to all who got involved and gave feedback from both sides of the debate. I really appreciate.
