Northeast Beckerhead Gathering PHOTOS ADDED

Looks like I have authorization from the boss (wife) as well. Trailbum, what should I bring? I have a 10'x10' E-Z up canopy I can pack along which may be of some use.

I am getting really pumped for this. My girl and I can't wait to come down and hang out.

Jeremy

I just met up with dresnor on his way through.... really wish I could go. :-(

However, I did give him a couple bottles to share with everyone. First is a traditional mead: Mad Trad C is a sweet, basically "plain" mead that will give people an idea of what a simple sweet mead tastes like. This is about 14% alcohol by volume.

He also has a bottle of Braggot, which is like half-mead, half-beer. It's about 12% alcohol by volume, so it's strong from an alcohol point of view, but has a pretty gentle ale flavor.

These are best shared with friends around a fire, so enjoy!

given my other obligations, I'm looking at a day-trip up to the gathering tomorrow. I'll post again if I'm actually departing!

since I cut my finger and don't like riding after dark, the motorcycle is probably out. but I woulda looked cool rolling in like that at least until the end of the pavement. :-)

packing the car, later than planned.
TB, I'll give you a call or send you a text shortly.

I went!
I returned (same day)!

Summary: Yay!

more in a little bit.

Ok, here's the summary of my literal drive-by:

I left later than intended, but made it up to Trailbum's place by early afternoon.
His lovely wife greeted me at the house and took me down the trail towards the camping area by the creek bed (very low water). What a neat area, btw. There were neighbors, but everybody's plot was large enough that there was plenty of room.
The property has great possibilities for such a gathering, and unfortunately I only got to see a little area due to my brief visit.

At the bottom of the hill I met Trailbum in person, AngryHippie, Geektechnica, Dresnor & his lady friend (dunno if she has a forum name?), and Epointer later in the afternoon.

Everybody was friendly and welcoming, of course, including Rosco the handsome Pit Bull. ("Sit, Rosco. Good doggie.")
I missed the bulk of the contests, but was immediately introduced to the tomahawk stump and learned a bit about throwing them. Oh man, THAT'S fun. Totally impractical and awesome. MORE!

After scarfing a hot dog while I was coming up to speed on the personalities IRL, the group did a BK&T show & tell and I got to handle MANY blades I never had before, including:
BK4, BK9, BK10, BK14, BK15, BK16, BK17.
Also represented: Candiru, Izula, BK13, ZT-something, Ka-Bar Mule, Phat Bob, and more!
Chopping with the 4! Chopping with the King! W00t!

Cool!!

Then I did a little show & tell of my own with a box of goodies from my bag.
Everyone was kind to my fragile ego, which I appreciated enormously. :-)

We chatted and milled around the campfire in the slower hours of the afternoon, but they went too fast anyway.
After a sharpening-on-stones demo, the group unexpectedly voted me the winner of the last remaining goodie from Ethan's box!!
Oh man, I was psyched to get a BH hat, but taking home a brand new BK-17 with a custom kydex sheath was over the top!
Thank you so much, Ethan, and Northeast Beckerheads! I have a stupid grin right now just thinking about it.

I was delighted that the Clyde's Apple Wine was well-received, but a couple folks might regret a throbbing headache this morning if they were a bit too liberal with it. It's great to have a drink at a campsite where nobody has to drive. Unfortunately I did, but at least a cup or two were quaffed to make up for my gatorade.

Around 6:30 (just when the chicken hit the grill, dangit!) I said goodbye and hit the road southward. A pulled pork sandwich from a local smokehouse provided the necessary human fuel for the route. Damn good hotsauce, a bottle followed me home.

Dres, how'd that firedrill fire go? I wanted to watch the rest of the process. (This dude can pack an altoid's tin like a pro!)

It was totally worth it to spend 7 hours in the car for a lovely afternoon in southern New Hampshire with fellow BH enthusiasts, and I was disappointed I couldn't stay. Everyone was great, and I hope Trailbum does it again next year!

Trailbums view.

First off I would like to thank Ethan Becker for donating the prizes and giving us a good reason to get together and meet up.
BK16, BK17, BK11, Stainless steel water bottles, Beckerhead hats and patches. Thankyou.

Alright the gathering is over.
What a great time.
What a great bunch of guys and a girl.
Who came, well it was me Traibum, AngryHippie, Lil-Bum, Dresnor and his Ladyfriend, Geektechnica, Daizee, Epointer.
Perfect number for a first gathering.

Friday,
Once everybody arrived we headed down bottom to set up camp.
We all picked out camp sites and settled in.

Geektechnicas Hammock setup.

Pork chops were on the menu and Angryhippie set to work.
After supper we enjoyed the fire and really started meeting everyone.
Everyone was great.

Saturday,
We woke up early and had breakfast (Bacon and eggs).

I wanted to see what everyone else had for knives and gear so we had an informal show and tell.

We started to practice for the tomahawk throwing contest and realized this was going to be a real contest.

I gave a confusing land nav class that I didn’t understand.
Afterwards we laid out our maps set a course (880 yards through the woods) and headed out.
We ended up very close to our destination with everyone taking a turn as pointman.

Next we had the first contest. FIRE.

You had one knife and a fire steel.
When the judge says go you need to find tinder and wood, start a fire, and burn through a string 1 foot off the ground .
GO.
Geektechnica, Lil-Bum(My son), and Dresnors Ladyfriend took off.
Sarcastic coments and helpful hints were not taken well by all contestants.

Geektechnica won this one and made it look easy.
He chose a BK16.

The second contest was a chopping contest.
Everyone gave it a shot.
Chips were flying.
Times were close and knives used were the BK9 and a RTAK 2.

Dresnors girlfriend chose a BK11 as her prize.

The third contest was the Tomahawk throwing contest.
You had 10 throws at the target.
The competition we saw was fierce and Dresnor won by one throw.
He said he wanted someone else to win a knife and chose a stainless steel water bottle instead.

I started to head up the trail and who do I meet but Daizee and my Wife heading down bottom.
He had a pack ( hopefully with some of his custom knives in it ) and a jug of apple wine.
After we introduced ourselves, we begged for a show and tell.
He brought a few of his custom made knives.
Everyone of them was a work of art. What a craftsman.
They were passed around and given back grudgingly.

This one is on my short, short list.
Black handled one.

We asked if he would give a sharpening class and he fixed my BK2 for me and worked some magic on Dresnors BK9.
I wish he could have stayed longer, I’ve sharpened all my knives myself and they need help.

We all voted that Daizee needed a Tweener, a BK17.

056_zps73af6aad.jpg

AngryHippie started on the BBQ chicken and we said our goodbyes to Daizee.

Dinner was great and the apple wine was good and strong.

My wife came down to socialize and meet everyone.

Epointer showed up with food and a smile.
He is new to Becker knives and our obsession.

JWL couldn’t make it but sent a bottle of Mead and a bottle Braggot.
Both were opened and consumed.
Mead is hard to describe, sweet and strong.
Braggot is more like beer. Good stuff.
Thanks man.
My camera does not have a working flash. So no night pics.

Sunday.

Early up bacon and eggs and deer sausage.

Dresnor gave a class on Traps.
He gave a great class and we all had a chance to build and set the
traps. I do not remember the names of the traps.

Our knives.
Not bad for five new BeckerHeads and Becker knife enthusiests.

Tear down and pack up and say goodbyes.
I had at a great time and I will be doing this again next year.
I hope everyone will come back.
I hope those that couldn’t make it will be able to.

If I missed anything I'm sorry.

Had a great time! I have to go through the pictures and do a write up about the weekend.

Trailbum, his wife and his 3 little bums were great hosts and if invited my girl and I will be back again!

Jeremy

I love seeing other gatherings and how they turnout. Daizee, good synopsis! Looks like fun and I'm eagerly anticipating more.
