Well, here I am, and so glad I took today off from work
Figured I'd throw up the few pictures I took and give everyone a write-up of my take on the event.
Firstly, I just want to thank Trailbum and AngryHippie for hosting the event, you guys did an awesome job, and AngryHippie is a pretty good cook
My thanks also go out to Ethan who sent us an awesome box of prizes and goodies!
My ride up from NY was uneventful, about 6 hours total due to some roadwork delays. Once I found the right driveway, Trailbum came out to greet me, along with Dresnor and his girlfriend. We tossed our gear into the truck and headed down the trail at about 6:00pm to the camp-site where AngryHippie was getting the fire ready to cook dinner. After some introductions we got busy setting up camp before it got dark. Trailbum was trying to look hardcore sleeping out in the open under a lean-to
The Firepit:
Dinner was some awesome fire grilled pork chops, potato salad and macaroni salad. We sat around the fire drinking and exchanging stories until about midnight, before everyone wandered off to their respective resting places. The night was beautiful and clear, but COLD in the lower 40's. I was pretty snug in my hammock, and got a good night's sleep.
We woke at dawn around 6:30 or so, it was chilly and foggy. We attempted some instant coffee, which while supercharged was more like coffee syrup
We got the fire built up and AngryHippie reprised his role as camp cook, turning out some awesome bacon, eggs, and sausages. There was a bit of knife show-and-tell while we were waiting for the sun to burn through the fog.
The sun poked out around 10:00am and it was time for our first activity, which was Trailbum attempting to get us lost in the woods
He handed out maps and compasses, and guided us through the basics of point-to-point land navigation. After a few minutes of fiddling around with the compasses, we set off to a point through the woods about a half-mile away. AngryHippie stayed behind at camp so that when the search and rescue squads arrived, he could point out the direction in which we headed off, ha! We actually caught on to it pretty quick and about halfway through were able to look at the topo map and determine roughly where we were. Our goal was to come out on a dirt road around a specific point, which we did pretty well, coming out onto the road within sight of our goal.
"What do you mean, I thought you knew where we were going!" :
No search and rescue required! :
We turned around and headed back into the woods, a couple hundred yards down the road so we were looking at new terrain, and attempted to make our way back to the camp. We had to follow a little trail for a bit to avoid some water, but got back to the camp-site easy enough. The Hippie looked relieved that he didn't have to call 911.
We set up a stump and started chucking tomahawks, which we sucked at mostly, but was fun nevertheless.
Dresnor lining up for a throw:
Hey, someone actually got one to stick!
After the tomahawk's we got set up for our first contest, which was fire-making. Competition was Dresnor's Girlfriend (That should totally be your forum name btw
) along with myself and Lil-Bum. With the assistance of my Bk14 I got a nice toasty fire going, and took away a drool-worthy BK16 with a custom AngryHippie kydex sheath! The 16 has been on my wish-list for a while, so that worked out great!
After the fire contest we moved on to chopping. I got to borrow a BK9 and learned why they call it the King! The second it touches your hand, so many more things look like they need to be chopped
I really need to get one. Trailbum beat us all in double-time but gracefully gifted his prize to Dresnor's Girlfriend, what a stand-up guy!
By this time we had all taken some more turns with the tomahawks and were feeling more comfortable with them, if not proficient. So we all lined up to compete.
Dresnor watching Lil-Bum line up his throw:
Dresnor took the prize on this one, beating out AngryHippie by one with a score of 8/10.
After some hotdogs for lunch, Daizee showed up and floored us with his box of custom knives. I sure hope he counted them all before he put them back in. Awesome work and awesome guy, apple wine wasn't bad either
Dinner was a BBQ chicken, corn on the cob, and epointer brought us an amazing 5 layer bean dip which I'm sure kept several tents warm that night. Then it was time to try the mead! There we were, a bunch of super-prepared, geared up Beckerheads, completely stumped by as little a thing as a cork in a bottle! Not a one of us had a corkscrew, ha! Trailbum saved the day by riding the 4-wheeler back up to his house and rooted one out. I've never had mead before, tasted very interesting, very much like the apple wine we had, but with a very sweet honey after-taste. Good stuff!
Everyone hit the sack early around 10pm as we had a busy day and it was starting to rain. Despite on and off rain throughout the night it was much warmer (60 or so) and I slept like a rock.
Woke up to a clear beautiful day, and started it off right with more of AngryHippies bacon and eggs, this time with some fantastic venison sausage patties.
Once breakfast was over, Dresnor walked us through making some traps. Several foam cups did not survive this encounter, as well as a few sticks will no longer be roaming the woods freely.
After the traps it was time for me to pack up and head home as I still had a 6 hour drive to look forward to. Before leaving however we all brought the knives we had brought with us for a "stump shot":
Everyone started packing up, exchanging contact information, and saying their goodbyes. I had a great time with awesome people in a beautiful spot. I hope I get to come back next year!
Here is a link to the full gallery of pics that I took (not too many as I was busy enjoying myself, and my camera kept hiding from me):
