One of my favorite knives is my Northwoods Mammoth Ivory Forest Jack, The only problem has been the legendary iron man back spring. Out of the box it was what I considered a hard 9—a nail breaker. I worked with it for a few months and got it to a respectable 8. But it was still not an easy opening experience. So here is this beauty:

So I asked forum member Bob (BigBiscuit) if he could cut an Easy Open notch into this knife. WOW is all that I can say. Knife arrived today and it’s all I ever wanted. Because of the shape of the Wharncliffe tip it has a natural place to grip the blade. With the notch it’s turned this from and 8 to 4-5 pull for me. Well sure, its still an 8 but it’s now a pinch pull and not a nail breaker. Here’s some photos from Bob:

And yes…I’ve been hunting down Mammoth handled knives of late. Maybe it’s because I am feeling as old as a fossil that attracts me. Here’s a last photo with some of my Mammoth beauties.

A big thanks to Bob for his craftsmanship on this one.

That is a handsome knife, and I feel like the mod actually added to the appeal. It's like the easy open notches provide some subtle visual distinction to the handle to balance the contrasting finishes on the blade. At least to me.

Wow, very mod nice work. I have the same FJ in Cocobolo, and that is a great idea.

Fantastic job, Bob!! I agree with abbydaddy that the EO notch actually adds to the already-striking visual appeal of the knife.
Congrats on your "new" knife, Mike; I'm glad you're so pleased with it, and thanks for sharing the story. :)
Congrats on your entire incredible herd of mammoths!:eek::thumbup::thumbup:

That's just plain gorgeous. The placement of the cutout looks completely natural, too -- like it belongs there.

That is a nice job on that mod! Great looking collection you have there:thumbup:

Very nice mod indeed! I had a Indian River ebony done with the same type of mod. Really gives the knife a good feel and easy to use with stiffened up joints.

God job!!
