Northwoods Willamette Whittler

I'm sorry but the name Willamette just doesn't have any bite to it. Yes I entered the contest and got passed. For example, I was attacked by a 500 pound black bear yesterday picking up my mail, but thanks to my Willamette I lived to see another day. Just not feeling it here.

I am still warming up to it. But try saying, "Wharncliffe Willamette Whittler" 10 times and see what happens?

I like the name and the knife. I think it's name and quality are in line with all of northwoods's excellent offerings.

Willamette is also the name of an old and famous raspberry variety. Now it can be " I cut the old Willamette canes down with my Willamette Whittler." Or, "when Willa met Whit Lure, she had a knife time".

It's a whittler, not a hunter. You need to carry something more suitable when doing something as dangerous as picking up your mail.

having spent some time in deserts, I really like the thought of a camel bone knife but the blue just doesn't do it for me.
Any other colour options coming in camel bone?

Now patiently waiting for my cocobolo WWW to arrive and out comes the mammoth versions... "oh yeah!" I want one of those.

What an excellent review.
Thanks for taking the time to put together the informative text and helpful photos - very much appreciated.

Just got mine in!

I opted for a cover of light cocobolo wood, which looks excellent when paired with the lighter-tan leather sheath.

The photos don't do it justice, they don't capture the intricacies of the wood, or the change in shading. Everything is perfect, except the pull initially had a little bit more grind to it then I would like (went away after a few openings).

Just a comparison with my much used presidential, the cover pattern of the red jigged bone is much darker and richer, but once again the photos don't pick that up.

A few notes on the price point:
Yes $140 is a lot to drop on one knife, but the construction is absolutely excellent. This has everything that I would expect out of a $140 knife. Also, this is a full size pocket knife. Don't let the slim shape, or the small pinned shield mislead you.
-the walk-and-talk is definitive
-it has a perfect pull, strong but not a nail-breaker
-The back-spring is flush with the liners in open and closed positions.
-The blades are nestled in where they won't produce blade rub (I get some rub on the presidential but it doesn't bother me)
-The covers are flush with the liners and the bolsters

If you are looking for a dogleg pattern, or are interested in getting into a higher end traditional, or haven't yet experienced northwoods, I would highly recommend it.

Mike, that's a fine specimen there! Those light colored cocobolo's look really nice. I havent seen the lighter color much. I agree, the price point is just fine on these.

Nice review! I just ordered on in mammoth ivory. It gotta be beautiful. Can't wait to receive it on coming Monday.

Finally it arrived this morning. Gorgeous knife! F&F is excellent! Everything is perfect.

I would say pull is a bit more than mid way. Not bad at all

That mammoth looks beautiful
