Northwoods Willamette Whittler

Thanks Derrick! In fact, that is my first mammoth knife and my first order with KSF. It was 100% satisfaction!

Here is my mammoth Willi Whittler, along with a few other knives that somehow found their way into my mailbox !

This is a very fine knife and the mammoth covers are high quality but the price with mammoth is double that of the others (except ivory). I doubt i will be able to afford any more mammoth handled knives without a 'correction' in the market.

KJ, your mammoth is very beautiful!

1095 steel is very prone to rush. Mine arrived yesterday and it starts building up stain already, maybe because of the humid weather here. Do I need to take any special care for 1095? For non-stainless, I only have experience on M4 and superblue, both of which with forced patina on it. Thanks!

I caved and bought the "premium" mammoth. Got it yesterday. Looks very nice. I will post a pic when I get some time.

Hom76, wipe the blade clean and then dry with a clean cloth after every use. The light superficial rust you are seeing now will wipe off with a rag as it has only been there a very short time.
A very light coating of mineral oil on the blade will prevent oxidation and keep the blade looking as new. Apply a thin coat after every use once blade is wiped clean & dry.
AGRussell sells an oil called "Rust Free" which is more tenacious than mineral oil and is sold specifically for protecting knife blades from oxidation. However i have found mineral oil (available at drugstores) to work perfectly well.

KJ- that mammoth ivory looks great! I have a hard time justifying ivory though because for the same price, I can usually get two knives. Plus, that blue camel bone on these is really nice! At any rate, it's a looker!

I agree, mineral oil on the blade works really well and it's food safe. The only thing I don't like about it is that it can make the whole knife and your hand oily. I've started using Renaissance Wax on the blades and springs. Although it's not food safe, it works really well and doesn't need to be applied as often. It's also not oily.

Steve, when you say you apply Renaissance Wax, is this to say that you do it like you'd wax a car? Put it on, let it dry, and buff it off? Newbie question, sorry. ;-)

I don't let it dry. Just wipe it on and buff it. A little goes a really long way. The 200ml can would probably last a lifetime if you only used it on knives. Only problem is that it's hard to get into the joint. For that, I started using tuf glide, which doesn't attract lint or get gunky over time. The smaller bottles have a needle applicator.

OK, thanks very much!

Thanks to my big Barlowpalooza at Oregon, and because it happened in the Willamette Valley, I had a little knife money stashed away (had being the operative word!), and decided to put it into these eponymous whittlers.

They are beautiful! Traditionally styled treasures, every one!!
