Not an Emerson fan but looking for my first

so I've got allot of problems with Emerson knives that I've seen on YouTube and other places. I think it's a fact now that they are way overpriced for the Materials used along with f&f. Then I've got other problems with them as well. But I don't think it right for me to hate on a company before ever testing out the product. So I'm looking for my first Emerson. A horseman just popped up on bf was looking to pick that up. Just wanted to know if you Emerson fans think that a good choice for a first.

3.5 is a short of a blade as I like and 4 inch max

I don't like tanto or re-curved blades

Really you would just say don't get a production Emerson?
I've handled plenty of production Emerson's in person. Never bought a single one. For various reasons they just didn't do it for me. With that said......if you knock off $100 bucks I'd probably own a few.

There are many things I don't like about Emersons. And I've been vocal about them throughout the years, but I recently bought a few production Emersons on the exchange for the hell of it.

3 of them, the socfk, super cqc8, and scalawag. I really wanted to give them a shot and tried to like them. That said, even though the ones I've handled have been pretty good examples (except the cqc8) I can't choose them over my waved zt0804cf.

Their liner locks seem secure, they do. But I like the extra security of the hand reinforcing the lock. Not to mention, the g10 is a destroyer of pockets. The ergos and carbon fiber on the 804 are amazing and don't destroy my clothing. The chisel edge and or grind on the opposite side for a right hand user isn't a good thing either.

In the end, at least I gave them a shot.

Tried the iron dragon, along with the other 3 I listed above.

And that's my story as well, Shiny. Really all we can do is pick up some examples and put them through their paces with an objective view.

The CQC7 was my favorite of the designs, but the Benchmade version of it was so much better I ditched the Emerson and kept the 970.

There's a classic 970 over at AG's site that keeps beckoning me to get it. I'll own it by Thanksgiving if it's still there.

i like mine. not so much the high price i paid, but that aside good quality knives. i like the cqc8 the best of my bunch and the persian. the horsemans okay. have one as well, kinda small for my liking. it kinda a scaled down cqc8.

Agreed. Better to have tried them and to know how I feel about them. I do think Ernest has an eye for good ergos.

Excellent ergos and the liner lock works well as any. Easy maintenance, but the chisel grind and general blade geometry makes them inferior cutting tools, IMHO. CM-154 is a tough steel, but doesn't hold an edge particularly well compared to powder steels. If you want a knife you can use hard, pry off paint can lids, scrape, etc., fine. Just don't expect it to slice well.

LOL I started this for ppl to encourage me to pick up my first Emerson. Instead everyone's telling me all the problems I've noticed with them from A far. Do they still have a titanium liner on the locking side of the knife?

And is the cqc8 really that thick behind the edge?

So I can agree with most everything said here. I do believe they are over priced for what you get compared on the market today.

I think they have the best ergo's though. I've never had a problem with a lock but also I'm a sensible person and don't use my folders to spine wack or whatever idiotic "strength" tests people come up with these days. They are easy to sharpen, clean and maintain. I enjoy using mine for any task than just about any of my other brands. It's almost like I don't care about how they end up because in the end it is just a tool and as said before there isn't anything special about them.

If you want it just to flip open and closed and not actually use then get something else. If you intend on using it, get it, try it and use it.

I have a Kershaw Emerson CQC-4KXL that works perfect and is well designed . Nice 4" blade . Cheap but very good for the $ . I carry it when there's a risk of loss or damage .

Same here. I even took the time to stonewash the blade and frame. Its a good knife.

You should just try one for yourself it wont cost you much if you dont like it.
There are a many people that love them they are just not here because these pages usually do not end well.
They are light weight for the size , the wave is cool and I find it convenient when your hands are busy ,
easy to sharpen , the odd thing I find is they are very ergonomic but sure don't look like it in photos.
Maybe try a used on e from the exchange that has been broken in already , that is what I think most people
don't like the most is break in time it can take a while.
It took me a long time to find this one , I dont recommend you start with this one though it is very big, just wanted to post a photo
I hope you try one out for yourself.

I would never tell you not to get one simply because I don't cotton to them. Be like saying "Don't order the salmon" because I don't like seafood.

Instead I'd like to encourage you to pick up any knife that interests you and give it a whirl. You may very well end up being a fan.

Not like nobody likes Emersons... heck, there's an entire website made up of worshipers of the brand. Plenty of folks love them and find them worth every penny.

You may find that it is your favorite brand, but you'll never know until you try. Opinions on the web are fine for what they are... opinions.
