Not an Emerson fan but looking for my first

emerson haters just can't stay away from an emerson thread. like flies to you know what. :)

yeah its pretty thick behind the edge. most emersons are.
I haven't seen any real "hate" in this thread. Not sure how giving an opinion based on first hand experience is hating.

Handle one before you buy. Horseman is a poor fit for my hand, even though I EDC'd one for years... CQC-7 is the winner for me. I have 5 of them.

For what they are I agree they are overpriced. Best to pick one up in the Exchange here to save a couple bucks.

While you're at it, get a ZT 0630 ... it's basically a full Ti frame lock Emerson with CQC-8 style blade, great ergos, better steel, for a fraction of the price of an HD-Emerson, and worth every penny!

Heckle is my middle name, Shiny Heckle Edges. In all seriousness I use to be in the Emerson "hater" boat. Despite my dislike for some aspects of the knife I tried a few out, I can see the appeal. Just not for me, I say the OP should try one out before making a final judgment.

I still have the scalawag right next to me, you know what else, I think I actually like nylatron washers. They're smoother than I thought they'd be.

A100 is a damn good knife. They gotta make a super production version.

If you're considering it, picking up a slightly used one that's discounted off the Exchange is just about the best way to scratch that itch. You wont know if you like them until you try one.

Also not a fan, and most because the value isn't there for me. The only one I ever really like was the mini 15. It is a tanto and recurve, of which I like neither. It was said "a 15 in combo edge is like 3 knives in one" and I don't disagree. I will say my local knife shop carries them and man there is a huge variance of lock up on even identical models. Best you handle in person if possible. They had a NIB 10 I wanted and the lock up was 75%! Yeah, no...

I think that the ZT Emerson knives are a much better bang for the buck than the production Emersons are, especially at the prices they are currently. If you like the Horseman, take a look at the ZT0630.

As usual, great post Vel!
Joe

I would never tell you not to get one simply because I don't cotton to them. Be like saying "Don't order the salmon" because I don't like seafood.

Instead I'd like to encourage you to pick up any knife that interests you and give it a whirl. You may very well end up being a fan.

Not like nobody likes Emersons... heck, there's an entire website made up of worshipers of the brand. Plenty of folks love them and find them worth every penny.

You may find that it is your favorite brand, but you'll never know until you try. Opinions on the web are fine for what they are... opinions.

That just rolls off the tongue Chris!!
I also like nylatron in some Knives. My Mcusta Katana is stupid smooth with no play.

This is what I did when I got my first one- a Gentleman Jim. Turned out I loved it and it's a versatile folder. Turned Emerson's into one of my favorite folders.

so I've got allot of problems with Emerson knives that I've seen on YouTube and other places. I think it's a fact now that they are way overpriced for the Materials used along with f&f. Then I've got other problems with them as well. But I don't think it right for me to hate on a company before ever testing out the product. So I'm looking for my first Emerson. A horseman just popped up on bf was looking to pick that up. Just wanted to know if you Emerson fans think that a good choice for a first.

3.5 is a short of a blade as I like and 4 inch max

I don't like tanto or re-curved blades

Buy it.
I have the Super CQC-8, the biggest version of that knife.
It is pretty great (overpriced, yes, but still pretty great).

The Horseman is right in the blade length range you are looking for.
So get the Horseman or the regular size CQC-8; just don't get the Super CQC-8, because you will find it too big (even though it is pretty great).

I have 9 emersons and the horseman is the most versitle and useful blade of the bunch, i would call it the ideal EDC blade.
Thats just my opinion though. The ergos are perfect to me, and the blade length and shape is perfect for EDC.
To answer your original question, the horseman would be a grest first emerson, and if you didnt like it, horsemans sell pretty quick here.
Another benefit of getting used is the g10 is usually worn down a tad and not as agressive. That emerson g10 just gets better and better with more use as it starts to wear down a bit.
The journeyman would be a breat one too if you see one of those.

I love my Emersons. Perhaps I look at them through rose tinted glasses but the cqc7 is probably one of my top 3 or 4 all time favourite folders.

Whenever I go away on holiday/ for work, the folder I almost always take is an Emerson. They are just designed to be rugged reliable folders. I think of them more as tools rather than collectables.

Great ergos, grippy handles, solid lock up, blades which are easy to sharpen, geometry which finds a good compromise between cutting and toughness, able to be dissassembled and cleaned easily, and cheap enough that you don't care so much about abusing it.

They have a great warranty to boot which in my eyes goes to justifying the price.

In terms of a starter emerson I'd say a cqc7 tanto first then a commander. The 8/horseman is a good choice though. I sold my zt emersons, they are a pale souless immitation of the real thing imo.

LOL I started this for ppl to encourage me to pick up my first Emerson. Instead everyone's telling me all the problems I've noticed with them from A far. Do they still have a titanium liner on the locking side of the knife?

And is the cqc8 really that thick behind the edge?

I love my Emersons. Alot of people complaining about the lock up on Emersons are complaining about lock stick. The original walker liner lock was designed with lock stick as a FEATURE. Walker felt that the titanium galling to the tang was an extra security feature. Emerson knives still use this original design of the Walker liner lock. All my Emersons that had lock stick wore in until the lock stick went away. Now they lockup perfect. Yes the lockside liner is still titanium.

I have only ever got one Emerson that had a faulty lock and it was a Super Roadhouse that had lock SLIP. Lockslip is dangerous, lockstick is not.

I've got a 630 really nice knife a little thick behind the edge tho. Anyone think Emerson is going to stay in Business with how they price knives?
