Not bad for less than $10!

Fellas, I left an active link but went ahead and merged the "pearl" thread with this Rough Rider thread as there is no reason to have redundant threads.

Nothing to be sorry 'bout, just trying to do some house cleaning is all so that the forum is easy to navigate.

Here are some images of a Case Pearl Tiny Muskrat and RR Tiny Trapper side by side. In a lot of respects they are very close in fit and finish. Some obvious things not as good on the RR is they don't get the blades as thinly ground. RR parts don't seem to be as buffed or tumbled as the Case components. That shows up where the edges of parts come together.

The RR has half stops but they didn't pay too much attention to trying to get the springs flush at half stop...that would be waaaay too much to ask on a knife this cheap. But the springs are amazingly flush at full open and closed on this little guy. It amazes me that as much time is spent on fit and finish for the price of these knives. I have to give the win to Case knives though because overall they are (I believe) a better made knife. That said, you can't help notice how well made the RR knives are for the price.

CaptInsano, how about a pic and some comments on your new hunter? I saw them on the RR page at SMKW, looks like a very nice knife!

Here it is! Sorry for the delay. You might even spot part of what was keeping me busy.

Not bad at all! It's not a razor, but it is a slick little knife for $7. :D

I noticed that Rough Rider has started offering knives with bark pearl, which one retailer describes as:

Does anybody have any experience with this material? It looks quite striking but I wonder about its durability relative to bone, and if it 'ages well' in the way that, for example, stag will absorb skin oil and become translucent over time.

One of the first RR's I ordered was a Barlow in bark pearl, it is a really beautiful material. I thought it would be a rough to the touch material but it is an velvet over steel feel. It has striations that help grip but still feels...well...sensuous. I have carried my a good bit and haven't seen any damage to the scales, it is a fairly tough material but I wouldn't want to drop it on concrete either. I would say it is probably similar to bone in that respect.

They weren't kidding about the "RAZOR SHARP" stamping on the blade!

I was messing around with my RR bone-handled Peanut ($7, most pleased with it), and did a very stupid thing which slashed the tip across my thumb. Though I felt it definitely go in, my finger looked unharmed, and felt perfectly fine. I put a little pressure on it, and a clean slice opened up a good 1/8 into the tip. That little critter cut way down in there so clean I barely felt it.

Hurt like heck an hour or so later, but it does show that it's a sharp little knife.

I've been on the fence with their fixed blades, but I think I"ll get one and see for myself. Looks pretty nice from your pics.

thx - cpr

ps: Have you read The Hot Zone? Just read it this year; pretty scary. Rainbow six was kinda scary in it's own way, too.

. . . as I always have a jumbo P-39 (larger and easier than the old P-38) . . .

Off topic, I know, but where might I find a P-39? I did a Google search, and nothing came up. I like the P-38, but something larger would be nice too.

thx - cpr

Ive never heard of a P-39 (unless your talking about the fighter aircraft :D), The P-51 is available at County Comm

I haven't HANDLED enough of the RR to know how consistent their F&F is but they look pretty good in the images that have been posted in this thread. The few that I have handled look pretty clean and I would use the word "crisp" in that they aren't radiused as much as other factory knives.

I have to say "attractive" is in the eye of the beholder, to coin a phrase. I'm not saying Case knives aren't attractive, they ARE, and made very well and consistent. But the RR knives seem to be a bit more "crisp" and that, even though it's kinda cool, bothers me a wee bit because they can put more man hours into each individual knife to make it turn out that way.

Compare a Case/Bose collab. with the case regular production knife and I think you will see a difference that is comparable to a Case production and RR run of the mill. But then again, I could be imagining it. :D

Thanks for the explanation, I understand now what you mean when you say "crisp" and the hand work involved to finish them.

Most of my Chinese made slippies are pretty consistent in quality... I would say just some slight variations , like scale fit, or a few where the spring / frame fit is a little off... I have quite a few and other than what I mentioned most are excellent.

I've been looking to try the Chinese Marble knives, they run a little higher, but they have a nice looking swing guard and a large trapper.

Well at first I dismissed Silverdagger's comment, but he may have a point. I have never had a knife with with the dye come off. Even Chinese knvies from years ago, or Pakistain knives. That is highly unusual to say the least. Maybe someone else can chime in.

I haven't read all the post concerning this, but I can say I've had two henckels that bled dye, they lost a little color and my hands gained some:(

When I have gotten Petrolum distilate oil on bone, I have found the dye to bleed.
Both times with an H&R and a Henckel

Absintheur - That's okay. Happens to all of us. (I signed emails "thnaks" for years . . . ) I assume you mean the P51 mentioned by:

Stockman242 - thanks for the info - I'm getting one of those on payday. Interesting idea, that there's a larger one out there. When I was in the navy, one of my USMC friends told me that the marines would pick one piece of kit, and try to come up with all the ways it could be used. They came up with some pretty interesting ideas.

thx - cpr
