Not impressed with G10

I guess if you overhype just about anything in your head you're bound to be dissapointed.

That is, what ppl. learn here. Some sooner (the lucky ones) some later (may god give them enough money).

It is a few years ago when i firstly heard of G10 and all the things, that make a simple knife turn into a "high end" knife.

I like, that you can adjust the G10 scales a bit to personal preference like they were made from wood. You will hardly do that with a Griptilian without a completely destroyed finish.

I have carried knives with plastic scales or made of aluminium and compared to ally G10 is a lot tougher, meaning it can take more scratches, chips or whatever without looking ill.

That does not mean, the Griptilian or other handle materials can look, feel or simple work great, but for me, G10 offers some good options for a working, every day knife.

I agree, that the Emerson way is the best (even though i will hardly buy an Emerson i still think, he makes the very best handles of all. He should keep designing). I have smoothed my AFCK - 806 scales in that Emerson way for a more comfort grip.

The way Benchmade finishes their G-10 makes it feel like utter crap in my opinion. I love my 710, but am sending it to Chax Knives to get a new material. Spyderco's G-10 is head and shoulders better.

Try comparing the BM 710 to the BM Rukus. The G-10 is night and day different on these two.

I'll come right out and say that G10 is my favorite handle material (though I am warming to bone and stag). That said, the G10 on the BM710 is particularly bad. Not the quality of the material, but how it is finished. The texture doesn't seem quite right- it's slippery, kind of shiny in all the wrong places. I'm kind of curious how they achieve that texture. It's the same on the 705 and the 806. It's a little better on the Gravitator and much better on the old Strykers (my Stryker turned me on to G10). G10 is very nice if it is done well, and it gets better with age and wear, unlike FRN.

Whenever I get a new G10 knife, I usually carry it for a couple weeks with the factory texture, and then finish it off myself the way I like it. I sand it down so it doesn't tear up my pockets, and I polish the area under and around the clip so it's easier to get out, and I polish the edges so it's smooth and pleasing to the touch. I leave the area where my thumb goes in a sabre rough, because that's the only area where I really need texture. The rest of the grip is provided by the geometry of a well-designed handle. If there's not enough texture under my thumb, that's where the Dremel comes in. I keep everything kind of wet when I work on any G10, because the dust is pretty evil stuff. I find that Spyderco's G10 is the best for me to work with. The Byrd G10 is great.

I guess I'm one of the few that actually prefer Benchmade's G-10 over Spyderco's.

The Spyderco's are much rougher than is necessary and they wear out my pockets rather quickly too.

Remember, grip security comes from the handle design itself, not the roughness of the scales.

there's G10 and then there's G10.....; maybe it's just Benchmade's G10 that isn't so 'good' (i have no experience with BM's with G10 though...). the G10 on spyderco is good for sure, i know that.

either way, to me, handles made of G10 or rough micarta are the absolute summum of grippiness in knives, i love the stuff!

and by the way, G10 can chip and fade some, i experienced it countless times. but i guess it depends on your use/abuse of your knife :)

i think you're being a tad too hard though on judging G10 right away. the stuff is so good, you basically should like it, me thinks. i think the BM's 710 just has poor G10

btw, WARNING to STR, Moonwilson and others who simply start sanding G10: when sanding or reprofiling your G10-handles, make sure to wear quality breathing-protection (like those 3M masks with filters in it) and do your grinding in a well ventilated area. G10-fibers are seriously toxic, mainly because of the micro-fibers, it's very similar to how asbestos and carbon fiber affect the respiratory system. be careful!

I am not too fond of plastics. I thought (well, still do in most cases) that G10 (not to mention FRN :barf:) doesn't look good at all. Till I get my hands on BM Gravitator - it shows that G10 has a potential. Potential in using various colors and various finishes. It can give feel of something PROPERLY MADE - not just like piece of printed circuit board's cutout.

On the other hand, natural materials tend to change (size, color, surface) with the time, which isn't exactly what I want from EDC.

Therefore I have to admit that although a plastic (yes, epoxy is plastic), carbon fiber is the best option for the handles.

The way Benchmade finishes their G-10 makes it feel like utter crap in my opinion.
Not exactly something I would describe as utter crap:

I like it, but I think it's somewhat of a gimmick. I just bought a BM Vex so I could spend some time with a G10 knife to see what all the woo-hoo was all about. It does feel more solid, heavy and spiffy than most plastic knives I've handled, but it don't seem to be all that much to write home to mama about.

dont compare that g10 to anything. the g10 on the vex and the Byrd knives are of the cheapy variety. the exact same g10 that goes on Mtech knives.

but take that with a grain of salt. it still is g10 of some sort.

by the way. no one has pointed this out. the g10 texturing on the s30V leek is like 50 grit sandpaper.

G-10 is the best stuff in a liner folder I ever came across. I think the 710 has a Micarta handle. All the BM knives I ever handled had crappy non G-10 handles. If the handle is rough finised and knurly it is not too bad. BM puts too fine a finish on their handles. G-10 takes a polished finish where it is needed. Perhaps BM over did it if it is G-10.

That's why I said how it feels, not how it looks. It looks fine. Plus, I said it was just my opinion. It's cool if people disagree.

Just curious, which BM knives have you handled?

Before you pass judgment on G10, try another maker/model such as the Spyderco Paramilitary in G10. It is very grippy.

I just bought one and held my breath hoping that it was "all that". It is!

I love the G10 on this sucka ;-)

Hmm...maybe i did just handle one of the lesser impressive G10 handled knives.

They had a Rukus and a Kershaw Avalanche there so I wish I would have handled those as well.

My intent was to handle a Manix and 710 cause those will eventually be my next knife purchase. They didn't have any manix's (or any spyderco's with G10) so i just played around with the 710.

It's not like i'm going to avoid G10 handled knives (my next two purchases will have G10) it's just that I thought it would "feel" a lot better then my Endura and Grip given all the posts on here I've read about it and it didn't seem to feel all that much better.

Even if it felt exactly the same as FRN though I'd still like it as a handle because of it's chem resistant properties and the fact that it doesn't conduct heat.

Even so give it some time.

I was never disapointed by G10 but it has greatly grown on me since my first knife (with G10) and obviously took some time for me to appreciate how much abuse it can take.

Practical G-10 well may be....but who wants to carry G-10 when you could put something like this into your pocket :

When I think of G-10 I can't help but think of the lyrics to the old 1963 Jimmy Soul pop classic....."if you want to be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife...So from my personal point of view, get an ugly girl to marry you...... But if you make an ugly woman your wife, you'll be happy for the rest of your life. An ug-a-ly woman cooks meals on time, And she'll always give you peace of mind......(Sax solo).....Don't let your friends say you have no taste, Go ahead and marry anyway, Though her face is ugly, her eyes don't match, Take it from me, she's a better catch........"

-Cheers

If you are not impressed with G10... good for you!!!
You're gonna save A LOT of money!

I've just get my Paramilitary and I don't think I can go back to zytel any more

:(

Sorry for my english :foot:

I, too, don't care for the G10 on the 710. But the Paramilitary is a whole new ball game!
