hey,

I am 16 years old and carry a sog flash II with me everyday. The only time i dont have it is when I am at school and its waiting for me in center console of truck.

one day i got halfway through the school parkinglot and realize i still have my knife in my pocket. i go back and put it away and go into school. On of my friends asked me "why do you carry a knife" i give the obvious response "to cut things". He looks at me and comments on how i say it like it is soo normal.

are there any other people my age that carry knives? I think it is a perfectly reasonable and convienient thing to do. how are knives accepted in work places?

also, i was oppening a hose and there were a bunch of zip ties and i cut them and came to the last one and cut it and it was actually a twistie tie with the wire in it. oops. anyone know the best angles to sharpen a flash II at?

thanks

Lee

At your age I was carrying a spyderco endura fully serrated. And I was never any type of deviant. To carry a knife is to be prepared! Not to be wierd!

Me, but I try to refrain from doing so, since I'm in NYC and I'm younger than the age limit by a few months

This old fart really feels sorry for young men these days. When I was in high school, admittedly in a rurual community, any young man who did not carry a pocket knife was looked on as a little odd. We all had chores, were mostly hunters and fishermen, and it was just accepted that a person needed the means to cut things. Along with this, we were expected to behave responsibly, and if we cut ourselves the response from parents and teachers would have been to "Be more careful next time."

No, you are not abnormal. It is a normal human response to have and use tools, and a knife is the most useful tool of all.

Here are the Texas knife laws: http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/tx.txt
There may be laws specific to Houston that are different, you should try to find that out. Myself, I'm 17 and don't think it's strange to carry a knife. I gave some knives to my 12 year old sister and she carries them too. That said, none of my friends do, or would even think about it probably.

I started carrying a knife at age 10. My 13 year old son carries a knife, but I counsel him to restrict it to smaller sheeple friendly knives when he's away from home, and no knife at all at school (it's the law) and certain other situations.

I carried a knife to school from age 10 through high school and college. No one ever raised an eyebrow. Only one teacher ever even commented on it -- he asked if it was legal and I told him it was, and that was that. Even he was totally cool with it.

I'm with Mike. I have carried a knife since I was 8 years old. I think it was Grandpas old two blade folder. We use to play mumbleypeg on the playground and never thought of stabbing anyone. We did whittle down a lot of sticks though, not an easy task in the stick scarce Arizona desert. Americans take pride in their ignorance I think and are very acceptable to knee-jerk reactions to problems. Knives are and never have been a problem. People are problems.

I got and carried my first knife when I was 8 (1960, in a small town in Mexico), everybody carried a knife or razor blade to school to sharpen pencils, etc., pencil sharpeners and mechanical pencils weren´t common. We were all normal kids, it´s the times that have changed.

I´m not your age but I see nothing wrong with someone your age carrying and using a knife as long as it is as a tool. I gave my daughter a knife (SAK) before she was your age, she used to take it to school and once she lent it to a classmate to fix something in the classroom door (with teachers consent), another day some other teacher saw it and took it away and my wife had to go to pick it up.

I am 16 and I carry knives almost everywhere. And here in Canada, it is most likely even stranger to do so than in Texas! My older sister wants me to get her a Griptillian, and my dad carrys a Spyderco Jester, but no one else in my family does.

When someone asks me why I carry "a" knife (actually, I carry AT LEAST 2 folders and 2 multi-tools daily :D), I always tell 'em it's because at my age (I'm just 2 weeks from the big 5-0!), my teeth and fingernails aren't as sharp or as strong as they used to be.:).

I also remember when it was totally cool and acceptable to carry a knife to school (and EVERYWHERE else)...Man, I SURE do long for those days of "common sense" to return...

at your age, I would find it "weird" if you carried a knife with you all the time and never used it. especially if it was a larger folder. some peeps carry stuff for show...and in your peer group...it might be weird if you don't use it and just showed it off.

when i was your age, most kids carried slip knots that they got from their grandpa or dad. they carried them inside their pockets so it wasn't noticed.

I'm 60 now and I grew up in New York City. We always had some little pocket knife, usually a boy scout pattern for the bottle opener or sharpening pencils or mumbletypeg. Of course we carried them in school. We carried them everywhere.

I don't understand why sticks were scarce in Arizona. Didn't you have popsicles??? :D

Consider where you are posting. Not carrying a knife is considered unthinkable here. Sheeple (sheep people) think that carrying anything more dangerous than car keys is weird but always ask us for a knife when it is needed. Way back when was different, now is now. Just live by the rules and enjoy your knife.

well, being 20 years old i can say that i don't know many ppl my age who EDC a knife... altho there's a large part of the job market here who carry them for work and always have a SAK on their belt (loggers, electricians, hunters, park workers etc)...

it is uncommon to see kids our age carrying knives tho, i believe that's mostly thanks to a combination of shoddy laws and LEO's...

I don't think anyone should carry a knife for any reason. Someone might get cut or stabbed by those inherently evil things.

Just kidding. I have almost always carried a knife. Started with a SAK (I had to have one like MacGyver) but even before that we carried in the Boy Scouts, mostly two bladed variety. Everyone in my family carries a knife.

People do not feel they need to carry knives or tools today because society teaches us that someone else will take care of us! Therefore we don't need to be prepared to fend for ourselves.

Carry away! Enjoy your freedoms.

Well, first of all, congratulations for having enough independence and common sense to carry a useful tool for everyday stuff. Enjoy your knife!

Just a friendly reminder though - continue to use it in a mature and responsible way and don't screw around. Be a good role model. You are already known as the "knife guy", which puts a little extra burden on you. If you foul up, everyone who knows you is going to use you as an example of why knives are bad. I know that is unfair, but that is how peoples' minds work.

I got my first knife when I was around 7 or 8. It was just a little slipjoint that I found in a junk drawer. A few years after that, I got a couple of knives as gifts and began to carry them everyday. That was the 1970s and early 1980s though.

Hey there,
I'm 18 now and have been carrying since I was 13. I am never without a knife, and would feel naked without one. I think you are just using comon sense carrying one.

As Blindedbythelite said though, it isn't exactly commonplace to see people our age carrying. In fact, I don't really know any adults that carry except for one of my uncles... :o, though I have seen trade workers carrying before.

Getting asked why I carry a knife is something I come to expect, and it becomes almost humorus when they ask. Ex.- ::Friend struggling with item:: "Here," I say, handing them a knife. ::Friend opens/cuts item:: "Thanks," they respond, and soon follow up with "Why do you carry
a knife anyway?" :footinmou

When i was a kid there were about 5 acres of woods behind our house, and my friends and I would spend every weekend back there. I got in the habit of carrying a pocketknife from that.

Now I go to Duke University, which is in Durham, NC, not the safest town around. If you don't know what I mean, go watch the movie "Welcome to Durham", which is about local gang activity. Durham ranks in the top 20 of the US in the number of gangs in a city/town, and when you think about how small a town durham, is, that's pretty ridiculous.

I've had friends get mugged coming back from clubs, bars, walking to apts, etc. I personally have been in an attempted mugging once (I lucked out like crazy. I had bought this for a friend of mine off another acquaintance - http://www.combatelite.com/knives_sob.shtml - and was walking to my friend's apt to give it to him.) The dude walked up to me with a cheap flea market balisong and demanded my wallet. I pulled out the knife and told him that if he didn't leave I would ruin his day.

Since then I have always carried around a benchmade 9100S auto or the cold-steel ti-lite. On occasion, if I need to walk a decent distance late at night, I'll bring my cs tai pan, with the sheath clipped to my belt and hidden both in my pocket and under my shirt.

I don't have any formal knife fighting training (no kali or anything), but I have done tai chi, muay thai, and now kendo/iaido. While not stellar with a knife, i'm competent enough to quickly take down street punks.

More recently, i've started carrying around the cs vaquero grande or cuda maxx stiletto.

I'm 19 and have been carrying a knife for a few years. The two things I find about the majority of the population (sheeple) that I find the most humorous are how oblivious they are and that they really have no common sense when it comes to things like knives.

I normally carry a folder clipped to my front pocket and most of my shirts aren't long enough to cover the clip. However, it's amazing how few times I'm ask about the thing sticking out of my pocket by my peers. It's right there in plain sight and I always notice when other people are carrying folders in this fashion yet hardly anyone ever seems to notice it.

If any of my friends do see it they usually get kind of weirded out. The other day at work I had a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian clipped to my front pocket and my friend/co-worker asked what that was. When I said it was a knife he asked, "why are you carrying such a big knife?" I was curious how he knew how big the knife was since it was in my pocket and he said "well it's got to be at least as long as the clip." I was pretty confused by this point since the clip is only something like 2" long and that's pretty darn small for a knife but he though that was "huge" and had no idea why I needed such a big knife.

A few days later at work I had to cut open some boxes and took out my Spyderco Jester that was on my keychain. A different co-worker gave me a really weird look and almost looked scared of me when I took the knife out. The thing is freakin tiny what's to be scared of?

What I'm really worried about is when I start carrying fixed blades. I've always carried folders in the past but I want to get a fixed blade to carry for defense. I go to school in Washington DC so it's not the safest place in the world and I'm going to get a Spyderco Ronin soon to carry next year. I'm going to carry it IWB but if any of my friends ever see this scary looking knife they'll probably get really freaked out.
