Not pleased with Emerson CQC 1

So I got a new Emerson CQC 1 two days ago from a local retailer. Now I know this is a chinese made knife, but it's made by Kershaw so I assume there'd be a pretty good quality standard. Unfortunately, this knife came dull as a post, horribly off centered, and really tight. I can't even loosen the pivot screw as one side of it is simply a rounded dome, and turning the flat head on the other side just spins the whole hinge. Is this a trend with this line of knives? every kershaw I've had before, even the chinese made ones, have been much better. At least I got my money's worth out of those

Please dont use Emersons name when refering to the knife you bought. Emerson only designed the knife. Its a kershaw made knife.

Consindering the giant "EMERSON" stenciled onto the packaging, and the tiny "Kershaw" in red....
I'm just displeased that two well respected brand names worked together and this is the end result, at least in the one I got.
I also noted that I am aware it is made by Kershaw.

I bought a 4K xl off the exchange and wanted to hate it. Beat the hell out of it, waved and wrist whacked it open hundreds of times at work. It wouldn't die. Ended up giving it away. Hate to admit it but it was a good knife. Too heavy for me though

I'm hoping I just have a dud.... Going to return it tomorrow. Kinda ticked I have to drive 45 minutes each way to do so, though.

Are you kidding me he can use that name they designed it he's having problems with a designed flaw. So yeah he has a right to mention them

Design flaw? Or manufacturing flaw? The knife is cheap, and was based on a design on paper by Emerson, mostly blade shape.

Its a cheap chinese knife I am not sure what you were expecting originally.....

Approximately my money's worth? For the same price I've gotten Chinese made kershaws and spydercos with much better build quality. My $12 sanrenmu functions better than this particular CQC I got.

As somebody who works in manufacturing, generally when a company wants a product with their name on it to sell well and not be returned, we make sure the company we're having brand-label a product for us makes things well. In order to keep our company name in high esteem, we choose well built third party products if we're going today sell anything other than what we manufacture in house.

Yes a design flaw I'm sure Emerson and Kershaw talked of material used and I'm sure Kershaw didn't change the pivot screw after Emerson designed it. So not being able to loosen the pivot screw due to a flat side is a design flaw not a manufacturing flaw

Kershaws chinese knives need some work in the qualty department. The design is good, the execution is bad. Why do you want to blame emerson.

That's not at all a standard experience with Kershaw. I'd say do a return for the same knife and thoroughly inspect it before leaving the shop. I personally have two friends who own Kershaw made Emerson designs, and they've been very pleased. Not knife nuts, but people who own ZT and Benchmade knives, who appreciate good knives.

Sadly it's clamshell packaging.... I can't inspect the knife until after I've purchased it. But I will open the next one in the parking lot before leaving. I m just curious if it's a common issue or not. If it's common I'll just return it and buy a different knife, but if there's a good chance I got a fluke I'll do an exchange.

Fair enough, I hope the second knife ends up being a better product!

The only issue I was previously aware of with the Emerson Kershaws was that some were initially shipped out with incorrectly sized screws (length) for the pocket clip, so if you tried to relocate the clip from the lock side to the g10 side, the screws wouldn't reach. An issue that's been addressed for some time, I believe.

Never seen so much highschool drama before. It is a manufacturing flaw. Emersons name is on the knife so I don't think it's a problem to refer to the knife as an Emerson. But considering it was manufactured by kershaw, in China, you can't expect it to be perfect. The QC is hit or miss. If the knife was manufactured by Emerson rather than kershaw, none of these problems would exist.

$42 and change after tax. Not an incredibly expensive blade, but for the money I've gotten considerably better. I don't expect this to stack up to my griptilian or Manix, but I did expect a workable tool. I'm hoping my exchange tomorrow brings me a much more functional "cheap Chinese knife"

That sucks man... return it. FWIW, the 'full-blooded' Emersons that I've bought were always great. A super 7 is my regular edc--no complaints. Hope it works out for you.
