Not quite a Sebenza

Don't bother with a sebenza...

Get something that you can actually USE and not be afraid of breaking...

Speaking from experience Ive gone through 3 smalls and 1 large and they hail in comparison to my Hinderer XM 18 3.5 inch spanto...

As a gentlemens folder... sure get the sebby.. if your looking at using it medium-hard get a hinderer! its 100% worth the extra money... you'll never need another knife in your life...

Once I got my hands on my hinderer I got rid of all my sebbies right off the bat... just to get another hinderer =-D

Lastly, Im not saying hinderers warranty is great... (nothing like striders, which is amazing)... but chris covers virtually nothing... which is a slap in the face after spending $400 on 1 of his knives.. considering you can get a strider SnG ... take it out and beat on it.. and if it fails strider will cover it 100% (as long as you didn't intentionally do it)..

Yeah I'm still definitely torn, but I have a feeling that I'll be buying a bunch of quality knives from now on.

Spyderco Sage 2.

Agreed... The fit and finish is terrific, it carries easily, is often listed as one of the best EDC's under $200. It's one of the safest recommendations you can make.

I have heard nothing but good things about the AG Russell Gentleman's folder (the brother of the Acies with the flipper), same with the folding Sting.

Another super titanium framelock with a superb warranty is the ZT 550. The blade is less classy, but ZT covers it for almost everything shy of chucking it into traffic. They don't cover cosmetic issues, but they allow mods, and if the mods don't effect performance (like refinishing the handle) they generally still cover the parts. You can't say that about most any other company.

Ive used the shit out of my seb 21 in s35vn and it is holding up fine, I may get called out for not actually hard using it , but pics like this would say otherwise http://instagram.com/p/egUPjdx626/ Im treating it like I would my ol' SnG but without prying. The steel "could" be harder but its very good as-is - I am running a 12ish dps edge with a 18dps microbevel at 600 grit. AT 15 it rolled a bit so I went to 18

Yeah I'm not a fan of a few of the zt blade styles. However the zt 0801 has a nice profile.

I think the closest I'll ever get to a Sebenza is a SRM 710. Looks real simillar, and it's very affordable. So I won't be afraid to use it.
I'm not going to spend $500 on a blade. Because the $500 can buy me a new Glock, or a M&P.
I think the most I'll ever spend on a blade would be $150-200 on a highend Spyderco, or Benchmade Auto.

I said that to myself once.... Now i have a sebenza in pocket and a hinderer inbound. Its fun to go high end cause they dont devalue much, so you wanna try another high end folder, you can sell or trade into another high end one, and when the fun dies off, sell outright and go back to say, the sanremnu

Theres alot of alias recommendations; i had one & had lots of lockbar movement; i got rid of it; is this common? if so,id rather have the sebenza....

There's a guy on CL in my area selling an alias for a seemingly cheap price. Maybe I'll go have a look at it.

Don't bother with the Bradley Alias, my friend had one for a few years and the blade is almost rubbing the Ti scale. With a seb you can take it apart, clean it, tighten every screws and it will always be dead centered without any blade play (provided you didn't pinch a washer), the same cannot be said for the Alias.
It definitely won't hurt to put the S35VN one or two points higher on the HRC scale, but the overall quality of the Sebenza makes the frequent (about once a week) stropping worth it.

Lots of talk about "delicate" steel on CRK knives etc. While I'm certainly not going to call foul on anybody's claims as I wasn't there myself to bear witness, and anything is possible after all, I personally have not had any major issues with my Sebenzas or my Umnumzaan. I routinely cut through zap straps, cables, cardboard, rope, tape etc. I keep my knives razor sharp and the heat treat seems just fine. I realize a lot of you know this already but for those who don't, Chris Reeve in tandem with Crucible came up with S30V and now S35VN. Many other top level makers such as Emerson, Glesser, Bos, Mayo, etc. were also apparently asked for feedback but it was Chris who helped spearhead the effort. I think he knows his steel and has come up with a great product for knife use in almost any "normal EDC" situation.

I don't have a problem in the least with Hinderers or Striders (talking about materials and abilities of said knives - not getting into personal rumours/issues about individual makers) - I have knives from both makers and really like them. If I had to pry a car door open I would certainly prefer to have my XM-24, however they just don't have the same feel in my hand as my Sebenzas. Also, on an entirely different note, a Sebenza feels fantastic in my hand for Martial blade practises. I have quite a few knives I like for training and a Sebby is one.

Personally, I feel that if you can afford to do so, you should try to get a knife from each of the "Big 3" - CRK, Hinderer and Strider. You probably won't regret it. Have fun and use in good health.

Cheers.

The Sage 2 is a nice knife.
While it is similar: Ti scales, integral lock (Spyderco calls it the R.I.L.) it is also different: opening hole, wider blade, place of production and price.
If you would like the Sebenza, there is no substitue.
For me the Sebie has soul. To pick up the Sebenza gives me a good feeling and I like that.
That's important to me ( i know this is a soft-fact), but then I'm a knife-nut.
hope this helps

Red, That makes a lot of sense...I don't personally own a Sebenza but I do have 2 knives that I feel "have soul" It may be because I have used them for so long and they are just always there but they beat out many of the newer and more expensive knives that I have had.

+2
(what he said....and he said to said quote)
:p

I've had a few Sebenzas and I always liked them, except I always wanted a little heavier knife with a thicker blade. I finally found what i was looking for in the ZT0801. At 5.8 ounces the ZT is a full ounce heavier than the sebenza, and the blade thickness is .157" pn the 801 vs. .125" for the sebenza. Just my preferences I guess.

The Hinderer carries twice as large and cuts half as well. Not a bad knife, but its not a great EDC if you are looking for something discreet and something that will slice... I've had a few and they are excellent knives with excellent warranties, its just not too feasible for many people's EDC.... I've had a few and sold them all in exchange for more sebenzas...they cut twice as well at half the cost. Say what you want about paying for warranty...but at the cost of any sebenza, you could use a whole blade (may take you years), and get the knife serviced, returned to new condition, and rebladed, at the cost of any second hand Hinderer.... Even on a good day you can find an XM at $500, and a large sebenza at about $330, reblade is about $125, so you'd still have money left over...

i was in the same boat about a month ago, had been thinking of getting one for a few years but wasnt sure for the price. Long story short i got one and ill never regret it for one second. actually im looking to buy a second one right now. they are worth every penny

How would you compare Sebanzas to Microtech Socoms /Elite or Delta drop points/ ? Quality, feelings, whatever you can add.
