Not sure if this is the right place, but posts after 1 year should be locked

I'm not sure if this is the right place or not to bring this up, but I've seen a lot of newbies trying to buy knives off 1-6 year old posts. Idk if they just get excited when they see 42's for the prices they're actually worth, but can we do something about this? Bumping a year old thread is a little annoying... plus there are guy's who seem to go on a serial rampage and bump three or four threads at a time on old threads trying to get a good deal.

Idk, just my feeling, but I think we should put a sticky up that you should PM instead of bump, or the threads should be autolocked after a certain time frame, like a year or so. Again if there's a more appropriate place to put this thread, Mods feel free to correct me.

I'm far more irritated by the flea market shoppers, the guys who insist on making offers in the thread, instead of having the sense to PM/ email the seller.

I don't want a thread locked but it WOULD be nice if folks read it and then maybe just emailed the seller instead of bumping it. I do not get notice of PM's in my email box and prefer email.

Well we could start with a Sticky and see if that works, just like a general rule of thumb if a sale is over 3 months it's over for me, but for other people we could just say past 1 year its no good and you should contact the seller directly for an inquiry instead of bumping the sales on the boards?

Newbies who don't look at the dates on the threads they search out before posting in them probably don't read and understand all the sticky threads before they post either.

If you look at the dates you won't be fooled when old threads are resurrected.

I will agree with Cougar, and I will add that it helps to expose the IQ index of those who do respond to old/expired stuff.

True, but it is annoying. I guess maybe my question is, would it be unreasonable to lock them after a year?

Just my opinion, BUT, a lot of good information is buried in the knife making threads. So not all old threads need to go to the scrap yard. Perhaps the sale threads, but if you are selling then you have to opportunity to lock your own threads, which I do all the time.

Yeah that's what I'm talking about, just the for sale section of the non-maker's area. Makers are paying members here and use the income to earn a living, same with dealers. I think they should be able to keep their threads up as long as they want. But for us regular schmo's it's annoying when some buffoon wants to buy your model 42 posted 6 years ago for 125$.

I'm with you Frisky, these posts get annoying, especially since I get excited when I read some of the titles. But, it should be the responsibility of the seller to lock his thread down when everything is sold. It just takes one click of the mouse to do so.

Funny you mention this because I was actually about to contact you specifically for a sale thread that I believe is just over three months old. I usually start that type of private message with some type of wording similar to, "this is probably a long shot, but I saw your thread..."

To me it's pretty simple... If you start a sales thread, whether it's a week ago or a year ago, mark it appropriately. If the knife is sold mark it SOLD. If your item is withdrawn, mark it that way. Mark it at the top of your thread and maybe even as the final post. That should keep people from making silly offers months or years down the road.

As for people using outdated prices as a reference, there's not much you can do to help that person, including closing the thread.

in theory, i would agree.

however i think it would be a lot more work for spark and the mods than it is really worth.

i dont know if threads can be auto-locked, but the onus is on the op to lock their thread when they are finished with it.

We're a tad sensitive, aren't we??? What about folks who don't start their sentences with a capital letter? What if someone asks a question that annoys you simply because it has already been asked and answered many times before? Life can be annoying; just get over it and I predict you'll see an improved quality of life from that alone.

As far as whether it is reasonable or unreasonable, it is far less reasonable to ask the mods to now play the role of the "thread-lock-police" than it is to ask folks to exercise common sense. But that is the problem--you can't use what you don't have, and some folks simply have no common sense. Still, it is not up to the mods to intervene every time someone does something here that lacks common sense. There is no way they could ever keep up. So, a rule that threads older than a certain age should be locked is, IMHO, idiotic and won't solve a thing. It will however serve to distract attention away from the real problem children who the mods do need to manage.

It's also annoying when somebody posts a series of pictures and then 4 people all quote the entire deal, generally all close together. Then you get a page or two of the same pictures over and over, with a short comment at the bottom. But, the ones quoting should realize it's annoying, just as the ones bumping old sale threads should. But, they don't so..........
