Not the normal question: worst Spyderco design?

Aaaw man, you guys don't like teh captain? It's egro is crazy.

Worst design I'ce ever held imo was the cricket. Too small and curvy to sharpen.

The Spyderco knife that I love the looks of the most, but just cannot get a comfortable grip on is the Shabaria. It is one of the most beautiful Spyderco knives ever, but I just cannot hold it comfortably. I sold mine a few years ago and I wish every day that I could have it back, just to look at. As far as handle design though, just didn't work for me at all.

I'm surprised the Vagabond hasn't been mentioned yet. The handle was fantastic (thankfully that saw a new birth in the Aqua Salt), but the built in sheath was kinda iffy. I got one for free with one of my orders a few years ago.
I guess that tells you how well they were selling.

How about the pry bar for scuba diving? Super cool concept but what is it like in the hand when trying to cut. I think they were a foot long?

The most disappointing Spyderco for me would have to be the T-Mag. I hope they bring it back as the T-Magless. I loved the knife's design and the blade shape with it's Chinook style, but that attempt at being innovative with a magnet should have been left on the drawing board. Left me with a sour taste in my mouth. I also could never stomach any Spyderco with an integrated FRN clip. I'm amazed the Dragonfly has lasted this long despite the wonderful evolution Spyderco has gone through in clip design and other innovations. I can't wait for the D'fly's long awaited upgrade.

Lots of people are trying to trade them away. Me, I love the design. I'm trying to snag every one I get my hands on. :)

I used to dislike the Delica/Endura handle, because I thought the handle choil closest to the blade (where you keep your index and long finger) was too small. Now it's grown on me completely though and I love it.

I like Spyderco's big chopping knives (Hossom series, Rock Salt) but I would have liked them even more with convex grinds.

I also think the Byrds could come a little sharper out of the box. Love the sharpness of the regular Spyderco line.

I love the T-mag as well. Haven't put mine down since I got it. Then again I knew it was not a lock and just a carryable friction folder. I still can't figure out how so many people thought a magnet could lock a blade open. I knew immediately that it only held it from flopping around until you put your index finger in place.
What I hate is solid FRN handles with rivets.

This will undoubtedly make some people's heads explode, but the Spyderco that I haven't really ever liked very much is the Endura/Delica.

Shun the non-believer!!! jk. Actually most might hate me for saying I think the Yojimbo, gunting, rock lobster, barong, and khukri are extremely ugly, and I don't see how some of them would be useful. Not a fan of the ugly mustard yellow handle on the new leaf storm either. I thought the "S" was too weird for me too. I know this will get me shot= I cant stand the looks of the Chinook. ::runs for cover::

I don't like the blades with pictures and patterns cut in them.
I don't like hollow grinds
I don't like short little saber grinds
I can't think of any that totally sicken me, but there are plenty I don't have the urge to buy.

I wouldn't take one of those for free.:barf:

Ah man, don't sell it short. It was a sturdy design, with a self-contained sheath. Ugly but functional. But then again, I find Bulldogs cute but disfunctional so perhaps my judgement is impaired.

Hate to say it, but I'm still not sure how I feel about the Sage.

The linerlock isn't exactly confidence-inspiring, even though I think the linerlock on the Tenacious is very solid. The blade seems too short and stubby for the handle now that I have one to examine in person. The edges of the Spyderhole is are also sharper than I'd like.

It looks a little goofy closed. Blade appears to be comically shorter than the handle. This could've been fixed by rounding off the butt of the knife.

All in all, I could see this knife really growing on me, but there area lot of little nitpicky things about it that annoy me. So I'll keep it around a while to see if it does.

...On a positive note, though, it has inspired me to buy a Native IV. Love the finish on the scales!

After some reflection I will add the T-Mag and the Native 3. I have a T-Mag and although I love to play with it I just can't make myself really use it due to the non-locking blade. The magnet is weak, much weaker than a regular slip joint. Still a great looking knife that could have been so much more.

Not really knocking the design of the Native 3 but it just doesn't feel good in my hand. With the thickness of the handle coupled with the partially hidden hole, it's very hard for me to open with ease. A good rule for me is if every time I go to change my EDC I reach right over a knife for another one, somethings not right.

Not a fan of Southnarc, or does the "weaponish" intended use bug you?
No, the use just makes it of no interest to me. I just think the name Shivworks is in extremely poor taste and undermines the "white hat" image Spyderco has always tried to project. That, IMHO, makes it a "bad" design for them to be associated with.

The world, in case you haven't noticed, does not approve of our hobby. In my opinion "in your face" names, like Shivworks, Toxic Toys, etc. don't help our cause any. Reality matters little, perception is everything. Your Customs office proves that every day, as did ICE and the 10th Circuit's rather creative interpretation of the definition of a switchblade here. Need I mention the UK? Denmark? Germany? The guy who owns Shivworks could be the male version of Mother Teresa and it would not make one iota of difference.

I actually really like the look and design of the P'kal, but the weaponized image advertised for the knife makes me hesitant to buy one. Deacon's original post reminded me of this.

While I'm posting again, I'm not a big fan of the TMag. Design just doesn't appeal to me, especially the blade shape.

The one spydie I could never get an appreciation for is (now don't all jump on me at once for this) the worker. I know the worker is a big deal when it comes to the evolution of Spyderco, but I never liked the blade shape on it. I can't really call it their worst design, just my least favourite.

As far as I can tell, the only way to make some people not mind knives is to make them tiny and pink. Even then, some people still freak out over a 1.5 inch bladed knife.
Perhaps the name Shivworks is a little over the top, but I doubt that these sorts of names are the driving force behind moronic laws and public perception.
