Not to accuse any manufacturers of anything but...

If this is about the hole, the patent on it has expired, and only the round hole (ie circular) has been trademarked by Spyderco. Thus the capsule shaped hole is clear.

But then again, I'm not a patent/trademark lawyer, this is just my take on it.

Yeah, it looks kinda like the Captain, only different. The blade is straight, the handle is straight, the elaborate grind is missing...:D

Ok, so the Captain bears a vague resemblence to it. But even supposing Mr. Breeden was aware of this knife, and it influenced his design, I would not go so far as to call the Captain a copy of it. If you look hard enough you can see similarities between almost any new knife and one or more existing ones by other makers or manufacturers. Truly unique designs, aside from totally impractical flights of fancy, are the exception, not the norm.

I see the resemblance, but seems more like inspired by than a copy of. But come on, "first mate?" That's just asking for it...

which came first?
Well, in fairness, only their respective designers know for sure which design came first, since the timeline from concept to prototype to production is not the same for every knife. All I can say for sure, and the reason I intimated that the Boker came first, is that I have an '06 Boker catalog which I received around this time last year from my buddy Chad when his SUBCOM went into production. In addition to the SUBCOM, it shows the Magnum YA073, Boker's official designation for the knife, both are noted as NEW. The Captain, on the other hand, did not make the Spyderco 2006 catalog, and was first seen in their "2006 Supplement" released in June of this year.

Certainly would be if Boker was calling it that, but their designation for it is the Magnum YA073. Considerably less catchy, but definitely not provocative. :D

I wasn't trying to imply that Spyderco would rip Boker's design
off... I was kinda moving in the other direction...

I really don't see any relevant similarities. They wouldn't even have the same application in use.

Dietmar Pohl is Boker's in-house designer and he's the one that has the most input on outside designs.

He is an excellent designer in his own right. He is also a friend of Spyderco, and a friend of mine.

I seriously doubt that he would intentionally try to copy something another company was doing.

true Sal, Dietmar is a nice guy, liked his book on Tactical Knives as well,

but how about Boker Germany GMBH, the company itself? are you sure Dietmar designed this $15 POS for them or is it a Boker "standard rip-off design"?

anyway, about the knife, makes for a nice target-practice with a sling-shot or thowing star...or axe for that matter :)

it's definitely intended by Boker-Magnum as a Captain rip-off, for sure. just browse their catalog, you won't believe the amount of rip-offs you run in to. Herbertz does it too btw, and Haller, and........oh well....:o
