Not to accuse any manufacturers of anything but...

Personally, I think it looks more like the original Chinook than the Captain,
but IMO, it's plenty different enough.

I see the resemblance, but seems more like inspired by than a copy of. But come on, "first mate?" That's just asking for it...

I was just playing with names, I thought about it and looked at it some more, and it really does look like they went with the same concept as the Captain but different execution, while both may be totally independently conceived, they do look a LOT alike.

Of course, both look about 20 trillion times better than I can design anything.

I keep telling myself I won't argue about these things any more, but I always fail to keep that promise...

I think it's insane to say this looks like the Captain. The only thing the Boker and the Captain have in common is they don't look like a Delica. I guess they both go for a fat wide design, but neither would be the first non-slender knife.

The butt of the Boker handle looks like a Strider if anything (not saying that counts as a ripoff, it's such a small segment). The Captain uses a bulge-out handle grip on the belly, instead of the peaks-between-fingers grip like the Boker, except for the forward finger choil, which the Boker doesn't have at all and is yet another difference. The Captain has a sunk-down area where the blade spine meets the handle, while the Boker has a raised flat plateau. The Captain has a blade unlike almost anything we ever see, and the Boker looks like a short stubbed version of an old military knife.

The knives seem to have different aims.

The Boker has a lot of straight and even parrallel lines, and the whole thing is in line with itself. Except for the practical round finger cutouts, it looks like it was based on modifications of a rectangle and intended to have a very rigid, blocky look.

The Captain looks more like an attempt to avoid any of that, with the whole knife forming a loose curve and almost no single part looking like it was obligated to be included with any others. It's a rebellious design because it doesn't care if other knives always have one type of shape next to another, or if tantos are supposed to look like straight ninja swords. And it almost seems like the one completely straight line on the back of the handle (the blade spine looks slightly curved as far as I can tell) was included not for a rigid visual, but just so we couldn't simplify the description by saying it consists of all curves.

Let me say that I do not see a similarity and I designed the Captain. I first sent the Captain idea to Spyderco in Feb. 2004.
I do not think that Boker would try to copy it either.
There are alot of designs and it seems that there is an explosion of new ideas. Chances are you could come up with alot of similarities on alot of knives if you looked hard enough.
The Captain was born of a concept to merge two useful grinds (hawbill: used around my home in the coal mines for belt splicing and used outside of the mines alot in EDC situations) and a full belly for skinning, scraping, digging. The thing that I was really shooting for was the transition point between the two. The knife, do largely in part to Spyderco, turned out awesome.

Let there be no doubts, it is ALL Spyderco, I'm just glad to be a part!!

It's funny, but in my initial post, I made no specific mention of the knife to which I was alluding... That said, people have seen enough similarity to name it just the same. I think that probably means something, though it was never my intention to cause a flame war, if a small one. I'm not saying that all Bokers are junk rips-off, but I did see, what appeared to be, a strong resemblance in this case... I apologize for any anger, or mental turmoil that I might've caused anybody. It surprised me greatly to see a knife-artist like Sal ring in on this subject, and his post was very complimentary of Boker, and he denied any underhandedness... That's good enough for me... Now if he'd only get cracking on the "Tuff" and the Samaritan... ;)

Dang! How does Boker manage to keep the prices of its products so low?
All's fair in customer loves and price wars.

because it's POS......

side-track: the knife could be another rip-off as well, say Strider SNG, or Buck......

rip-off for sure, Boker's really good at that. copy a well-known knife-design, make it for $15, and people wil buy it. ugh

I'm beginning to get the impression Dennis75 doesn't care for Boker... :D

right on the mark. i hate em. well, for their 'own' brand "Magnum" with their nasty rip-offs for $10. Boker itself has some decent knives though........but not much, perhaps the SUBCOM fall into that category.....

like their catalogs though :D

Things I learned about this knife from BladeForums.com.

-It's a POS, even though those who claim so have never seen it in real life.

-It's a copy of a knife that came out after it, and is technically younger. (Does Boker rent out their time machine?)

-Boker copies everyone.

I like this forum, but the FOS* elitists kill this place for me. :barf:

(FOS = FULL OF SHlT.)

If I buy a high dollar custom to :jerkit: to, post pics here, and never take out of the safe, does that mean I can spout off ignorant jibberish with no factual basis too? Most any other forum in the world bans people for those things. Just earlier today I saw a moderator encourage it.

 I'll have to agree here. This thread really was a disgrace.

Looks more like a grown up SubCom folder with a hole and beefier blade to me but then that's just my opinion. Is Boker ripping Chad off now considering they manufacture his SubCom series???? Cripes! As if there aren't enough conspiracy theories in the world to baffle the easily mislead......

:D
