Not your usual request: poor blade/ handle ratio wanted

I'm spending a lot of time in places with a three inch knife rule. Trouble is that most of my knives with three inch or less blades don't really have substantial handles.

I normally like knives with the best possible blade/handle ratio, but I think I need a folding knife with a three inch blade and the longest possible handle. Other desirable features include:

Spydie hole or other blade hole opener, thumb disk or flipper. No thumb studs if possible

Pocket clip

Tip up if possible

prefer a lock other than liner lock

Any suggestions?

I know some Spydercos:

Yojimbo

ParaMilitary & Lil Temp; these are a hair over 3" though.

The Gunting has a 2 and 7/8 inch blade but it's a pretty specialized design and generally isn't easy to carry.

I feel your pain. It's hard to find a folder with a blade slightly less than 3" with a full-size handle. Maybe find one with a handle you like and cut the blade down with a dremel?

well finding a knife you like and moding the blade to be legal is a good idea and i was gonna suggest that too.....but the dremel thing sounds like a bad idea! I'd say have a pro do it....or at least somebody who knows about heat treating and how easily it can get messed up if you get the knife too hot in the modification process!

and because you're in such a lame, and special position...it sounds like it would be worth it to spend a decent amount of dough on what you really want in a handle, and then spend a little extra to have the blade made into what you want/need! .....do it right the first time ya know?

Man the Native and Para are sooooo close to that blade length. What about a UKPK or Persistence? Delica? I have pretty big hands and I really like to carry my Military or Police3, but many days I have to take the Persistence, Para, or Native4 and they fit me just fine.

You could always grab something and have a Krein regrind done so the blade it taken down to 3 inches. I have a Native4 and I highly doubt I could notice 1/16 taken off the tip and same goes for the Para (its about about 1/10 of an inch).

I know you don't prefer thumb disks, but the Emerson CQC14 is a great knife, with or without a blade length limit.

The Spyderco Sage 2 is a fine choice. Ti framelock 3in blade. around 160-170 on the street. I also need to pick up a 3in folder, I've been carrying a ZT30X and been concerned about garnering unwanted attention.

I'm in the same boat - do a fair amount of work in beer city - which to my surprise- I found out has a 3" limit.
Does Tom Krein bob and reprofile blades? Sent him a e-mail - but haven't heard back - understand this isn't unusual when he's busy?
Anybody have experience with anyone else who shortens and reprofiles blades?
And a CQC-14 is pretty darn near ideal?

Another one for a reground Para. It's a compression lock btw, which is similar to liner locks. If your preference(or lack of it) for liner locks is due to 'handedness, then the Para may not be for you.

If you dislike liner locks because of strength/security, then the compression lock should be no problem.

I love the handle on the Delica for some reason. I think they are hideous knives, but they feel so comfortable in hand...

So yeah, Delica.

My Paramilitary's blade is almost down to 3" anyway. Were I faced with a 3" limit, I'd finish grinding it down to the limit and carry it.

I just sold my Para not too long ago! Seems like I should have kept it now---but I would have to convert it to tip up.

My measurement shows the cutting edge at just under three inches, so it should be fine.

I EDC the Para not because of length restrictions, but because I absolutely love the short blade, full size handle idea. I don't need or want a whole lot of blade, but I do need a full size handle for comfort.

I'd buy ten if Benchmade stuck a three and a half inch blade in a 710 handle!
