Not your usual request: poor blade/ handle ratio wanted

I'm spending a lot of time in places with a three inch knife rule. Trouble is that most of my knives with three inch or less blades don't really have substantial handles.

I normally like knives with the best possible blade/handle ratio, but I think I need a folding knife with a three inch blade and the longest possible handle. Other desirable features include:

Spydie hole or other blade hole opener, thumb disk or flipper. No thumb studs if possible

Pocket clip

Tip up if possible

prefer a lock other than liner lock

Any suggestions?

First off, forget the Emerson CQC-14 that everybody's suggesting, as the only requirements of yours it meets are the blade length and tip-up carry!

Though the blade is slightly less than 3 inches, I'd go with this guy, the Spyderco G10 Poliwog:

If you get to the point that cops take a ruler to your knife, they are going to hang something on you anyway.

You could go for a Strider SnG. If you hold it with your index finger in the front coil, you have plenty of handle to hold onto, and only a 3" cutting edge. For a cheaper variant, you could find a SBMF 889 from Buck. They may be discontinued, but my local Academy still carries them for about $65.

The SnG fits exactly what you want:
1. 3" cutting edge
2. Long handle
3. Tip up carry
4. not a liner lock - Thick Ti Frame lock
5. Thumb hole opener

I would say the caly 3 great knife...tip up just under 3"(I think?) and a very comfy handle that is longer thn the blade due to the choil...

Persistence would also be a good one to try especially for the money...hell carry a tenacious and if it does end up getting taken it was so cheap that it is no big deal.

i agree, i've carried way over legal limit through alaska and had cops come and talk to me and let me go on my merry way...but i do believe it will be a state by state thing as per how the cops treat the situation, for the most part by the time they get to checking your knife they've already got something on you.

And I know people on this forum who daily carry blades WELL over legal length.

I'm in the same boat - do a fair amount of work in beer city - which to my surprise- I found out has a 3" limit.
Does Tom Krein bob and reprofile blades? Sent him a e-mail - but haven't heard back - understand this isn't unusual when he's busy?
Anybody have experience with anyone else who shortens and reprofiles blades?
And a CQC-14 is pretty darn near ideal?

I shorten blades and then regrind them on a regular basis for the reasons you mention. I would be more than happy to do the work for you.

Sorry if I missed your email. The BEST way to get me is the phone. 479-233-0508. I try to answer emails, but I am often simply overwhelmed.

Lots of folks prefer a shorter blade in a large handle... mostly they're folks who know what they're doing, instead of the armchair commandos who declare that a short blade in a long handle is "poor" instead of "useful."

Any Spyderco you can find with a 3" blade will suit you just fine. Most of their offerings are equipped with very ergonomic handles; even the ones with smaller handles give you plenty of grip and purchase.

I'll toss in another vote for the Paramilitary. It's close enough to 3" that I bet you'll be fine for all intents and purposes, and after a couple years it'll get smaller anyway. ;)

I disagree. I have a G10 Rookie and G10 Standard, both of which are around 3". I find the handles of both to be just a bit small to really get a firm grip, especially when wet.

Both are great compact carry knives, but the smaller grip area doesn't give you as much purchase as it could. And I don't even have big hands.

Spyderco Persistance, handle size is very close to that of the tenacious but with a 2 3/4" blade.

This is an excellent suggestion. I can easily fit all 4 fingers on the handle, it is SUPER comfortable.

2.75 " blade, tip up, spyderhole, the only ding is that it has a linerlock but it is excellent. It's quite thick, and the lockup is perfect, absolutely ZERO play in either direction.

NOTE: I polished the handles on mine:

Sounds to me you're looking for a knife with a proper handle ratio.

I'll throw in a vote for shortening the blade of a knife you like.

I had a user 710 that I aquired for a rather small sum due to it being tipped (the tip broken off). Instead of sending it back to BM to be rebladed, I ground the blade to a "LEO measure" length of about 2.75 inches.

Remember, LEOs don't measure cutting edge, they measure blade tip to handle.

. . . Emerson CQC-14 . . . the only requirements of yours it meets are the blade length and tip-up carry!

Nope - it meets all but one; the difference is that it has a liner lock. I was looking at getting the CQC-14 a while back, but then a CQC-10 distracted me. ;)

I don't think that handle would be big enough for what the OP spec's. I was originally thinking of suggesting a Native as well, but the blade length & handle size are not what the OP needs.

thx - cpr

Where might that be, if you don't mind? Ohio maybe? I know its not KY.

Well, for the past few days it's been the VA Hospital in Lexington. There's a poster listing the various offenses and carrying a knife with a +3" blade is one of them.

I also find myself on the Washington D.C. subway system from time to time. It has the same blade length rule.
