Well... I think you have done a great job so far, and it is easy to tell how dedicated you are to your site.

I am all for whatever decision you make. If the site goes down for a while, I guess I'll go sharpen all my knives!

If it means the server will work better and be more reliable then I can't imagine how any reasonable person could object to a little downtime here and there.

The really good news is that you're on top of things.

If you haven't found a new server yet, I recommend Just Host. When I was looking for a new host, I did a lot of research into who was the most affordable with the best customer service satisfaction and unlimited transfer. I've been very happy with them so far. For less than $5 a month, I get unlimited storage space, unlimited data transfers, unlimited email accounts, unlimited domain hostings, free domain for life, and anytime money back guarantee. Just a heads up: I'm finalizing who we're going to be moving to in the next day or so. Ideally we'll be completely moved by the 1st. I will give updates about the amount of downtime we'll experience when I have them.

That's shared hosting and not capable of running a site this large (database) and this much daily traffic.

I shall propose a toast to you at our very next "event."

[I'm a veteran ... we have these "things" every so often, where we return to our old behaviors with cranky enthusiasm and boozy bravado. Quite a few of my old chums at least lurk on BF.]

I've never encountered that phrase before. Having read it a second time, more slowly, I can now understand it to mean an Australian equivalent of our American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars, but that's not what I read the first time through.... :eek:

The equivalent of your American Legion would probably be what we call the Returned Services League. Organisation to look after the welfare of veterans and we also have another organisation called Legacy which exists to look after the families of deceased veterans.

Anyway, RSL Clubs or the associated ex-services clubs exist in almost every town in Oz and provided a range of services for veterans and the local communities.

That was a pretty wild bit of thread drift, wasn't it. :)

On a slightly related note, and somewhat coincidentally, the guy that runs the Oz knife forum is doing some moving around there as well. Looks like a universal problem.
