Tecate is too...hes saying might be abs material textured.....as he's thinking same setup on sheath as the cleaver slip sheath.....

"guard" = slip sheath. I believe Tecate was referring to the item which guards the blade edge.
Buck calls it an "edge guard sleeve".

I'd prefer something with more abrasion resistance.What would you prefer?
I personally would have loved something like 52100 myself.
For a stainless (which is what my wife greatly prefers), I think 12c27Mod is just about ideal.
It’s very tough, very stainless, holds an ok edge (very similar to AEB-L)…. And most importantly, is SUPER fine grained. I can get a keener edge with 12c27 than almost any other stainless steel.

That guard works quite well for drawer storage of the knife. It also has a felt type liner for the blade.
I have a number of them
Buck stopped using the old style guard as folks were complaining that it scratched the blade.....lol.
The new one is also less money so.

SOLD OUT ! Not sure exactly when. I for one am glad that Buck is keeping to the tradition of November kitchen knives in beautiful ebony. This knife was not for everyone but much praise to Buck for adding a new model, and making it an exclusive BOTM ! Happy Turkey Day everyone ! : )
