November's Challenge Discussion Thread

I tried making a fire for the first time this past weekend with my good friend ThePointyEnd. I was using a fire steel and wood curls, and epic failed. Pointy and I will be attempting the challenge and I hope to give yous guys a good show. (Plus, we all know it's hella fun to watch things burn down.) I've been reading the forums for a while now, over Pointy's shoulder; glad to finally have kicked myself in the pants hard enough to register. (Previous statement a totally off-topic FYI. Because I can.)

Found some cat tails last weekend; I'm gonna give 'em a shot some time tonight or later tomorrow.


Question for Moose;

On one of my tinders the flame went so fast that I wasn't able to get a pic of the tinder burning. Fail???

Cattails are some crazzy stuff !! FLASH!! You need to have your prep ready whin using that natural gasoline!!Ha!!

It wasn't the cattails; I don't know what it was. It looked like the fluffy stuff that the dandy lions produce, but it was from one of my wifes flowers in our front garden.

Yeah it's way too much! You should delete all of your pictures!!!

We just want to keep entries from getting too big, mostly because Ethan will fall off task. He has a short attention span. :D

I'd like to send out a thank you to JCL-MD for showing us the coal with punkwood equals fire. I had heard of this but never tried it. I had made my coal with a hand drill setup, and pretty quickly just stacked punkwood around it, blew on it for a bit, and had flame pretty darn quick.

Hey Moose, how many BeckerHead numbers could be earned in this contest? Does it just depend on turn out? Enjoying this challenge very much.

If Ethan picks a winner that is not a Beckerhead, well, then they will be by the time they get their knife. :D Its just a bonus, plus, if I'm just plain old impressed, I might give out one or two. I don't know. It just something I wanted to do, to get ya'll in the game.

It's a tinder fungus. I guess you can spark into it and blow it into flame, I have zero experience with it.
 
Well on my 5th attempt I got fire with a steel and just wood shavings. Im glad I got a chance to practice I had always used cotton balls or some other tinder I need to work on my skills more.
 
Well I think the biggest difference was getting a good fire steel. I bought a light my fire. The other ones were just some cheaper ones and just made sparks it would work with the PJ cotton but thats all I tried it on. The light my fire made great big sparks that glow for a bit.

I'm doubting that I'm going to be able to get in on this contest (school getting kinda crazy right now), but I still want to get to the point where I can do what you just did.

Congrats :).

Also, maybe I'll have to find another (larger) firesteel.
