Now I'm thinking FIXED blade as EDC (under one hundred dollars) and here's why.

Hi all,

My intention was to buy a 3" to 3. 5" Folding knife as my EDC. I have been researching knives in/about the one hundred range. I saw many a knife I like from such makers as Kershaw, Spyderco, Benchmade, etc. I was really set to pull the trigger on the Spyderco Paramilitary 2. I recently had a chance to examine several different brands/models when a funny thing happened. I guess you could say I had an epiphany or sorts. Tomorrow (July 14, 2011) is my Birthday and I will be fifty six years old. As much as it pains me to admit it, my (XXL) hands have lost a lot of dexterity due to the aging process and other factors. I found it.....awkward operating a folder, regardless of weather it had a Thumbstud or Hole. Now, I don't mean to paint a picture that at fifty six years old that I am incapable of operating a Folding knife but, truth be known, it is MUCH easier (and waaay faster) for me to simply graps the handle of a Fixed Blade to bring into play. So, I am seeking suggestion for a nice quality Fixed Blade that has more of a "Gentleman's" look as opposed to something scary Tactical looking. Something that has a decent handle but not overly thick. Something about the size of an opened Benchmade, Kershaw or Spyderco mid size folder. I appreciate any help/suggestions.
Thanks so very much.

Regards,
HARDBALL

hmm not <100, but how about a nice beefy BM AFOII :) or a slimmer BM auto if you don't want the beef :)

I have a street beat and it is a classy knife. Its not something I really want to cut with though. Its a fighting knife IMO. I have carried it and it does fit at the small of the back very nicely but it catches the seat belt when getting in and out of the truck.....Its a great knife.

I got a Benchmade Rant 515 in the mail today. I'm thinking it would make a great EDC. I'm turning 57 Monday and I know what you mean about the dexterity thing.

I've been EDC a Swamp Rat Rodent Solution for just that role. A bit over a hundred but worth it in my opinion. 3.5" blade and the handle is about perfect.

If you keep an eye on the knifemakers exchange forum, some gentlemanly looking blades in that size and price range come up for sale from time to time. Just a thought.

I suggest yo hop on over to the custom makers' forums, and see what you can find. I am very happy with my Fixed blade EDC from JK handmade knives, and it came in at about 100 Dollars. John's forum has a few available on it now.

I was just going to suggest a Busse or Busse kin blade. I have a number of Swamp Rats and a Busse Boss Jack and these are users. Really you should consider on of the Busse CABS. They are more than a hundred bucks but they will last forever with minimal maintenance.

I had the same situation recently at 58 with arthritis in my hands/thumbs. The Swedish/Finnish folk solved this problem a while back with what they call a grandfather knife. My pic-fu sux or I would show you mine.Fat and flat handle with a 3" scandi blade. Check out Ragweed Forge or any other Mora/Frost dealer.--Get 3 or 4 at the price. I put one in the p.u. and one in the tackle box.--KV

Benchmade Nimravus cub(154 cm -I think) I don't know if the sheath is to your liking though

He said he didn't want something "tactical" looking. That pretty much rules out the Rodent Solution.

Also, check out Bark River Knife and Tool. They make a lot of EDC fixed blades, and they are generally not tactical looking.

Bark River actually has one called the EDC. It looks like an awesome knife. I've never had a BRK but I hear nothing but good things about them.

Rodent Solution looks tactical? How? Because it has a black blade?

That thing is faaaaaaaaaaaaaar from tactical looking. I think we have to agree to disagree. I agree it's not gentleman looking, but it's certainly no tactical knife.

The BRKT EDC is well around 200 bucks so that rules that one out. I think for a pure gentleman looking knife, it'd be hard to find one for 100 bucks.

EDIT:

This is 115 though

And you can probably find this one around 130ish

Like bolt action said Id check out the makers forums. Get something similar to this JK EDC for around 100.

Been carrying a Horton Necker and a folder. Always felt fixed blade could do tougher work; prying and etc.

I like this blade profile; D2 steel and 5+ inch long.

It's more than 100 dollar though.Check out Poltergeist Works.pl

Other than that i would look into a Mora, Helle or Himalayan Imports Karda.

Well, I didn't say it was a "tactical knife". I said it's tactical looking. And, yeah, it is. Same reason that I didn't suggest an Izula. Coated blades generally look more "tactical" to your run-of-the-mill person. As for the BRKT EDC, I wasn't even aware that there was a model called that. They make several models of small fixed blades, and they are quite a bit lower than $200. A mikro Canadian, for example.

Classy, and right around the OP's price range. Including shipping.
