CRK does not carbidize their locks.
Mr. Reeve did create the RIL, and I trust CRK's abilities to make a long lasting and properly functioning lock without using carbidizing or steel inserts.

Well stated, Sir. Truer words are rarely spoken in these parts.

who said this? is this from a different thread?

Carburizing is known to be a weaker design its just the facts. Carbidizing is greater in every single possible way.

think about it...

Carbidizing

1) carbidizing can fix late lock up to early lock up.

2) Carbidizing can fix rock lock super quick.

3) How many carbidized lock faces have you ever heard with problems? None.

Carburizing

1)Thin layer of oxide that can flake and cause excessive wear super quick.

2) if rock lock developes the entire lock side needs replacement. The lock face cannot just simply be heated again.

3) Late lock up cannot be fixed and eventually means replacement of the stop pin with a bigger stop pin or carbidizing/ replacement of the lock.

Also, Chris may have developed the RIL but others have mastered it. The first of something is never the best. Just My honest opinion.

Carburized. Correct? Guys??

The sebenza is Carburized not carbidized.

Nutn got some Lionsteel knives....I guess he wants a steel insert on everything now. Ti-framelock that is.

He's seen too many framelocks fail so maybe this makes him feel safer? It's not a bad idea if you're not going to harden the lock face.

We know of Nutn's affinity for all things Spyderco. Probably because of all the JIMPING - heck the guy puts skateboard tape on every folder w/o enough jimping. So they could glue small Spiders with jimping on the blade for thumbstuds and he'd rant on about "why hasn't anyone thought of this before?"

Remember how he bitched about the detent in the Tenacious when he cut his finger? "They fixed that" So he comes out with the TNP Special Edition, signed, spray painted Tenacious. Awesome EDC/Tactical knife.

Another BTW, someone, pages back said he means that it can be used for anything. In his review of the Sage series or maybe it was the Sebenza he clearly states that "tactical" means for - self defense purposes.

What a load of tripe.

Really, why is he the only human ever who can "master" it? From an engineering standpoint it is very simple. You act like he designed the Mars rover by himself. I will say this, I never seen any other knife with a deformed lock bar whether it was brought about from the first owner or fifth owner. Obviously, there are some complications with the Ti and hardened SS interface as other companies have done the steel inserts.

I have.
You just haven't been looking at enough knives if you haven't.

And it isn't like he said "Oh, I've invented this lock, now I'm going back to bed." He has tweaked the design over the years.

Terrible analogy with the Mars Rover too; entirely irrelevant to boot.
