Nutnfancy's review of what a outdoor knife should be

I like the video of him boobing when he cut his hand reaching in his fanny pack: "Tenacious Cut." It pretty much says it all. I've cut myself bad enough in other parts of my body doing some stupid enough things and the last thing I would do is go online and start boobing to the world about it.

He puts together decent quality videos so seeing the product isn't that tough. His attention to detail covering features is handy too.

His voice drives me crazy though...really, I can't watch unless I'm in a tolerant mood.

Also, I swear he takes a 5.56 with him to get coffee at the 7-11. I think he carries a bit too much of 'they are coming to get us' around with him and it makes his viewpoints a bit warped.

Also as mentioned, if he doesn't really know something, he's glad to fill in the time anyway and can do so in a convincing manner...so one has to take what he says with a hefty amount of salt.

I think it was his videos on the Rajah II and Benchmade 741, where he didn't understand how to deploy them and then said they were too difficult to deploy...sort of amusing.

He comes out with statements like "Rajah II, terrible steak knife, I don't recommend it. 2lb drilling hammer...terrible camp axe! Not recommended Bag of lead? Too heavy, impractical. When I carry a 2lb bag of lead, I generally carry .25oz of titanium, so I don't understand the use for this 2lb bag of lead."

It is handy to see so much gear documented relatively well though...just better to play on mute and listen to music a lot of the time :-).

I think I've seen three of his reviews. I could barely watch the first; had to force myself to watch the second, and decided I'd never sit through another one after the third.

What are his credentials? I can't help but imagine he's just some geeky know-it-all wannabee....

Anyway, I think the Skinny ASH is a great outdoor knife. But as you're finding out, everyone has their opinion of what the ideal knife should be based on their experiences and their preferences.

I really think finding the perfect knife is a hopeless quest. As you get more outdoor experience and try more knives, you start to zero in on exactly what you want. Then you start looking for that knife that is exactly what you want. Then, before you find it, you have a new experience that changes your opinion on what that perfect knife should be. And so on....

And then you get older, and start to change the way you do things outdoors. And so your ideal knife changes again. And so on....

Be happy as hell with your Skinny ASH until you decide you really need something else (and you may never).

Stay sharp,
desmobob

I can't imagine lugging ANY heavy knife much above treeline for any extended time, what would you cut with it; rocks? On any above treeline backpack/peakbagging trip I take an SAK or small leatherman, and maybe a small sheath knife at most. Than being said, I love my skinny ASH, and I do use it for general camping, canoe trips, and bushcraft use. I like it better than the large Falkniven because it does slice better, and is still very tough and chops and batons well. But I do have a Falkniven F1 which is great, I use it a lot. Nutnfancy's videos are entertaining, (the few I've watched) but yeah I'd take them with large chunks of salt...

It really doesn't matter what his credentials are. We all have opinions and they are (hopefully) based on our experiences. If you find some piece of equipment works for you, what does it matter if someone else says it doesn't work? My problem with Nutnfancy is that he's made the comment that if you disagree with him then you must not have any experience. I've batoned a lot of wood and have never used WD40. Does that mean I've never successfully batoned wood? It's ridiculous.

He's just a guy on Youtube, take his advice or don't, watch his videos for entertainment... or don't. I don't fault him for doing his own thing, however, but he's not an "end-all" anything.

He owns damn near every sub 150 dollar knife in existence and camps and treks about as much as we all claim to lol :p

He does a job that nobody here would or could do, he gives his honest opinion on mid price range knives...a lot of mid range knives. Sure he is bias but my god guys, surely some of you can see the irony of calling someone bias in a Busse fan forum lol. Take what he says with salt, and know who his target audience is. Not a super knife enthusiast, not a millionaire, not a collector, but the average knife guy with VERY limited funds to spend.

Did nut'n'fancy actually talk about knives or did he trail off into some moronic commentary about some diggity dag crap..... anyhow I feel completely confident with just taking my Boss street with me backpacking, hiking, camping. If things go wrong then I can get cut all the sapplings I need all day long to build shelters and split the wood to get to the dry center. I mean its not like I am going to get stranded and need to cut down some large trees to build a cabin with. If I know that I am going to do that I will bring the appropriate tool... my stihl chainsaw :D, oh yes... lets not forget about his expertise about the axe review he did and whether they are needed in the wilderness.. nothing like trying to actually chop up a tree with a SPLITTING AXE... that pretty much ended it for me.. my 8 year old son even knows better then that.

Lets keep it real man. He has done what, a half dozen trips in the three years he has been on YouTube? With as much as he exaggerates his Mil/LEO (non-combat pilot/neighborhood watch) experience, I take his claims about how much he hikes/camps with a grain of salt too. What does that have to do with anything anyway?

Hey, I'm all for keeping it real. I guess my point was that he actually uses his knives and posts vids of him using them. In the spirit of keeping it real, the vast majority of busse knives are never used. I know some are but the vast majority are collected (probably because they are f'ing beautiful lol) So I guess I trust the opinion of someone actually using a knife someone who sits anonymously behind a computer screen calling him out.

Furthermore I don't believe he has ever said anything bad about busse knives other then his problem with value which is highly subjective. (correct me if i'm wrong)

The guy doesn't get the difference between a Bradly Alias and a Sebenza, a Strider and a Buck Strider. Or the differences in the markets that exacerbate the cost differences. Lay a NMSFNO next to his chipped out Fallk A2 and all he will see is an extra 5 ounces and secondary market markup.

He does, he just sees things differently then some people.

His ideology is that if a knife is 300% the price, it should preform 300% better. If its 500% the price then it should perform 500% better. Clearly this is impossible so he claims its a poor value.

My guess is that Busse fans (myself included) take a different approach. If a knife CAN offer 10% better performance then its worth 300% more. Anything less then top notch would be poor value even if its near free.

Its up how you define value, but I don't believe you can say either is flat out wrong.

yeah. expensive knives are pointless and nutnfancy is my hero

You should have left your origional post up. It made good points even if it sounded a little directed at me ;) I was just trying to play devils advocate.

Very true, but honestly I doubt I'd have much luck fighting a mountain lion with ANY knife... I do sometimes carry "Bear Spray"; never had to use it, and I hope I never do. I just keep a clean camp, don't sleep near my food, and hope for the best.!
