Nyala?

Nyala is a great knife. Perfect size and shape IMO.

Here a few CRK fixed blades to it compare to.

Does anyone think that the tamboti handled version from Orvis is any better than the micarta version. I'm just curious if people think it is different enough from the micarta version to try to seek one out.

There were only 25 of those Tamboti Nyalas made IIRC so that could be a tough knife to find. If the knife is going to be a user then I personally would take micarta over any sort of wood every time.

Yes...

I know where to get one I just didn't know if
if the extra cost would be worth it or
If that they were really that desirable.

It would depend on how much extra it is, 10s of dollars perhaps 100(s) no way. It is a limited edition knife and will always be more sort after than a regular production Nyala so a "premium" of some amount is to be expected.

Okay if that is too much I will pass. It doesn't
Look much different than the micarta version
anyway. Limited edition is one thig but
it doesnt sound like a deal anyway.

I got my Nyala last week. Things have been busy so I am just getting around to the pictures. I am really impressed with how balanced this knife feels. The quality is definitely there.

For clarity, I can't tell you that it's too much - that's your call. I can tell you that it's more than $100 over what I paid for mine a couple of weeks ago. On the other hand, there are exactly 25 of them, so it is very uncommon.

Personally, I think the Tamboti is really gorgeous and incredibly well done, but that is something you have to decide personally and you definitely have to see in person to get a real feeling for it.

So, on second thought, maybe the mark-up is not bad. Look at it this way. People routinely pay huge premiums shortly after Spyderco sprint runs of 800-1000 knives sell out, and those are relatively common production knives (and not all of those that trade up quickly have uber-steel blades). If you think about it in that context, a CRK with a total run of 25 maybe is reasonable for the premium.

Okay now I feel confused. Anybody else want to give an opinion? How many of you would buy one of the Orvis knives for $400? How many would just get the standard Nyala?

Get the Orvis one if you plan on it being a collectable. It will most likely be a more valuable piece with a higher resale price in a few years.
Or get the standard Nyala which is what I would do and did.

I have a bit of problem with price gouging of any sort so I would just stick with the regular production knife and keep an eye out for future limited runs.

Sorry to bring this post back up. Would any know where to get an Orvis Nyala? If so please email me.
Best wishes,
Oliver

Edit - my error, didn't register "Orvis."

I think it's a forum violation to post links to non-sponsoring dealers...but in less than a minute I found half a dozen dealers with the Nyala in stock, both major web dealers and specialty dealers (all for the same price though some offer free shipping). Google will hook you up.

I believe the Orvis Nyala was an exclusive and now sold out.

You are right, my error. To that point, when this thread was posted on 11/30/11, I called Orvis and asked how many they had in stock - the answer was two, and I purchased one of them right then on the phone. Since there were only 25 of these made, finding one now is going to be extremely difficult. The sheath in the picture below is from my regular Nyala and has been dyed saddle tan.

Price is a question, too. There's a post above asking about a $400 price. Since there were only 25 of these, it is hard to get any sense of market pricing. It comes down to "what is it worth to me?"

Thank you JNewell and marthinus for your kind input.
If that Orvis Nyala is so rare, I would pay $400. Just a matter of locating one.
Best wishes, Oliver
