O.K. Cyclist! What TRADITIONAL knife do you carry when riding?

I commute by bike so most of the time the knife I carry is the same as my days carry. If I am going for a long ride for fun I carry one of these. The pocket sheath (made from a sew-up tire) helps keep the knife in my jersey pocket.

I did used to carry this for a while. Someone gave it to me to test out but it turned out to not be as heavy weight as advertised. Hybrid multi-tool folding knife.

I usually carry a couple of knives with me when I am bike camping but always have a case small stockman on me.

I've been a road racer and serious cyclist for 40 years and rarely carry a knife. I used to carry a non-traditional neck knife, here and there, but the last few times, I've switched to traditional pocket carry knives when I go riding to collect wild shoots for arrows. I've carried my Opinel #6 but prefer to take my SAK Hiker. I like using the saw.

I ride every day and carry a traditional every day. :) That said I've just built a new horizontal sheath which I'm hoping will be much more comfortable for cycling than my regular one.

Nice idea for a thread, afishhunter.

My usual ride is some flavor of English 3-speed. I wear street clothing, so I carry whatever I happen to have in my pocket, which is usually an Opinel with a slipjoint of two blades or more.

Nice bike! This thread is making me want to get my Traditional Bike out of storage. It's a 1960s (I think) no-speed, coaster-brakes steel-fendered Hercules (made by Raleigh and sold at Western Auto in the USA) I wonder if I can get it rolling again?

The fancy new bike I ride nowadays, although I don't know what to do with all those gears. :D
MB-6:

I'm usually just riding in the neighborhood- to the store, post office, etc. so if I'm wearing jeans, I'll have whatever traditional I'm carrying that day in my right front pocket. I've never had a problem with it falling out. I worry more if I'm wearing shorts, so I'll switch it out for something I consider easily replaceable like a Buck 373.

Nice vintage Bridgestone you have there.
Do mine eyes deceive me? It looks like you have the BioPace crank on there.

I long distance bike commute to work during the warmer months. So I throw whatever knife I'm carrying that day into my bag, along with everything else.

Thanks, I had to look up what that is, and I don't think so. Must be a trick of the camera. I admit I don't know much about bikes, I got this one from a friend who had it stored in a garage for years. I paid a kid neighbor kid to replace the cables and brakepads and anything else that was rusty and now it's rideable.

Knife content: I'm inspired to take it out for a ride tomorrow, and I think I'll take my alox Pioneer Rancher with me.

Cool idea for a sheath:thumbup I'm wonder where the brakes are on your Cannondale:confused:

My wife and I will ride around town when the weather is nice, and I usually carry a SAK on those trips for the tools.

In his legs!

Ah...its one of those where you push backward on the pedal...huh. I remember those...lol But is a Cannondale:eek::eek:

Brakes just slow you down... :D
Long story short, the bike is made that way. It is a track bike made for riding on a velodrome so it has no brakes.
Those sew up tires make good pocket sheaths. The higher end sew ups have a silk lining so it is easy on your bolsters.

What a cool idea for carry and retention. A nice way to reuse materials too that otherwise might get tossed.

I do not ride regularly anymore but I did so as a teen/young adult and I always carried my knife in a belt pouch. My knives were precious to me as a kid (they still are), and I was paranoid about losing them so I usually carried a Buck 110 or 450 in a belt pouch when I rode to and from work as a teen. The horizontal one you fashioned is a great idea, nicely done!

I ride a Surly Cross Check (among others) in fairer weather (a foot on the ground here now) and usually have a bag on the back rack. Rigged out for a geezer bike with extended steerer and Rivendell mustache bars and mountain bike shifters/brakes. Always a Schrade Delrin scout knife in there, but I never feel limited; might carry all manner of knives because I love them so; they are always traditional. I often have a Ruana or Buck fixed blade in the bag.

With a foot of that white stuff on the ground it is time to make PEDAL TRACKS!
don't get enough sky dandruff in this part of Idaho (Twin Falls) to make them. :(

I think I'll put my Ulster scout knife in the tool bag.
