It's almost time for Barb and me to get a new car and this time instead of buying a late model used car I think we're gonna opt for a brand new one if at all possible.:D
One that should go 200,000 miles or better without too many problems so should be the last one we will ever need.
The title of the thread tells what I have got in mind although I'm still mighty fond of the 2004 Chrysler 300M, just worried about dependability and being on a fixed income.

I've done a lot of research between the Nissan Altima and the Toyota Solara both of which are highly dependable cars.
I'm opting for the Nissan because they have a timing chain instead of a belt that should be changed every 60,000 miles.
When I first started I was checking out the 3.5 SE and SL models and may still settle for one or the other of the two.
However that Toyota Solara is still one sexy automobile as well!

But last night, early this morning I was checking for aftermarket speed equipement for the SE and SL and ran across the new SE-R!!!!:D
Now this is my kind of car!!!!
There are very few options to be had with it because it has most of everything already on it!
We're gonna opt for the five speed auto no matter which one we get because we're getting too old to be shifting and using a clutch besides being lazy.
This is a dream car, for me, that comes with a 260 horsepower V-6 @ 6200 rpm right outta the box for a tad less than $30,000.00!
The SE and SL 3.5 both come with a 250 horse engine and that still ain't no slouch!:D
It has real gauges, instead of idjit lights, like the 350-Z has. It comes with special 18" alloy wheels and sticky tires as well and I'm not real sure about how long they will last, still got a few questions before a final decision is made.
This will be my last Hot Rod if we get this model, think I'm too old or going through Menopause? ;)

Check it out and tell me what you think of it.:D ......

I'm excited and can't hardly wait until the time comes, may be six months or more but I'm already psyched!!!!:D
The article, or another one, talks about torque oversteer which is common to high powered front wheel drive cars. :D

Hi Yvsa,
one of my co-workers bought a 2004 Nissan Altima and he got rid of it with in 6 months because he had soooo much trouble with it. My Neighbor had a Maxima with a lot of problems too. I'd buy a Toyota long befor a Nissan. My Mom bought a Malibu 2 months ago and she loves it. I took it out and it was an extreemly solid car with a very smooth ride. I might just get one for my wife I liked it so much.

That's strange Chris. We have a friend who is a Mercedes and BMW mechanic who says they are very fine macines and recommends them highly. He says he is always busy while the mechs at the Nissan Garage stand around most of the time.:)

Not to sour the thread, Yvsa - but I've had way to many headaches with Nissan's to ever want one again. True...I did bring on a few them myself....:D.....I went with a Honda - haven't looked back. Just my 0.02

I agree with the 5 speed auto - love it. Looks like a heckuva car....

The images I get of ole Yvsa hot-roddin' downtown OKC......me likey...:D

Long time no post here.
Anyway, I had a 2nd generation Nissan Maxima and a 240 sx (made in Japan) long time ago. They are very long lasting, trouble free, and fast machine. However, recent Nissan cars are having a bit of quality issue. I'm not sure where are they made but I think they are not assemble in Japan anymore. On the contrary, My friend have a Infinity G35 and by far, the sexiest and fastest machine I'm seen. No problem so far.
I drive a toyota truck now and I think they are very reliable. Newer Honda's does have their issues.
Have to mention are: Nissan uses Premium gas, Honda uses Premium gas, Toyota uses regular unleaded.
With rising gas prices (even $3.00/g) I'm glad I got toyota, their new VVti engine do save more gas with higher power. Do look at the newer Scion series or Hybrid.
I'm for green all the way. I predict one day I'll ride a horse to work! Just like the old days...

I've been driving a Nissan Quest since '93.
Only problems were with the Ford parts supplied in
the original joint production.
126,000 miles

Whatever you choose,
check the insurance rates before you buy.
And theft rates.

Consumer Reports used to have Quality ratings for the various cars
in each year.
If the SE-R is similar production to the SE,
then same QC should apply.

I'm sure Nissan makes good cars too. Every manufacture makes good and bad, even with a new car it is a crap shot you never know what you are getting. Thank God new cars have warrantys!

they did a show over here where they took a old rusty toyota pickup they bought for about £500 (~$750) and ran it into a tree, drove it thru hell, actually dropped another car on it from a crane, each time it started & drove away (after they bent the crumpled sheet metal away from any spinny bits. they parked it on the beach while the tide came in, then couldn't find it after it went out (anchor ropes broke) until they sent in divers. towed ashore, they drained the water out, replaced the oil, it drove away again! they then poured a gallon of gasoline into it, set it on fire, and after it went out - you guessed it - drove it back into the studio. it did look a bit worse for wear tho & probably would not pass inspection...but it's the car that wouldn't die.

My stepfather has an Altima 4cyl, the cars are well-built. The V6 model is quite peppy, 14s in the quarter mile- not bad for a $30k sedan!
I'm a Ford guy myself, owned Mustangs for the last 14 years, never had problems.

'95 Maxima is the best automobile I have ever owned. We put over 120,000 miles on it. My wife got tired of driving it and wanted something different, so I sold it to my brother who travels. It has almost 200,000 miles and still going strong.

I gots a Toyota. :)

10 years old, about 137500 miles and still on the original clutch. Other than regular maintenance no real problems. Maybe because of me driving everywhere in 1st gear. :D

Of all the cars I have owned, my favorite was my '77 Caddy El Dorado. It was the first car I ever owned with a tape deck and an antenna that went up and down by itself, not to mention electric seats and windows. When I drove it around, even if I only had a dollar in my pocket, I felt affluent. I would see other Cadillacs on the road and feel a secret bond knowing that we were a "special" class.

I ended up selling it to a pimp for $500 and would occasionally see it around town with a couple of "ladies" in the back seat and James Brown playing loud on the 8-track.

Now when I drive around, even though I am more affluent than I have ever been, I don't feel special anymore. I just feel like an old geezer with a Chevy pickup. But, it's a nice 4-WD pickup, and I do have a CD player, and electric seats and windows. But the antenna doesn't go up and down.

Ron, one of the mods here on BFC, has a Nissan Z that he bought used that he is very fond of. He has driven it a lot of miles with no problems beyond normal maintenance.:)
I know there's the possibility of a lemon in any new car and that's why I plan on buying an extended warranty on whatever new car we get that goes way beyond the factory warranty.:D ;)
I don't totally have my heart set on the SE-R, just like the idea of having another hotrod that's also a family sedan.

We looked at a 2000 Toyota Solara a while back and I wasn't too impressed with the V-6 it had. But there's a ton of aftermarket speed goodies for the Toyota and I haven't ruled out a Solara yet.
The new ones may perform better than one 4 years old.;)

From the articles I've read the Nissans aren't as smooth as some of the other Japanese cars and that has some appeal to me but probably not for too many other people.
I like to be able to "feel" the road and am willing to sacrifice some comfort and sound levels to get that.
I grew up around old fast cars and have never gotten it outta my blood.;) :D

And all opinions are welcome. That's the main reason I posted the thread as I really want to hear everyone's thoughts.:D
I also like the looks of the new Pontiac G-6 and the new GTO and the Dodge Intrepid and Stratus, like we have now, a '96 model, but just ain't ready to trust the quality of American car's anymore.:grumpy:
Seems like the Japanese cars all run forever, like the old pickemup truck that kronckew posted about.:D

We got ours free. It belonged to my father-in-law's second wife. My wife had to take the bus to the funeral in Fresno because we were having car trouble at the time, so her dad gave her the Caddy.

A few months ago, after his third wife died, and he had to go the rest home, he gave us another one. We gave this one to our daughter who drove it to Indiana. It was quite an upgrade from her 90 Geo Metro to a 92 Caddy.

The Geo was my wife's car before she bought a new VW Gulf. She bought it in 1990 and never had any trouble at all. A while ago somebody walked on the roof and collapsed it so the insurance paid to have it cut off and a new roof welded on. It was as good as new.

I know nobody will believe me, but that three cylinder Geo Metro was the best car we ever owned. It had more interior leg room that the cab of my big 8 cylinder Chevy pickup.

No, I believe you Ben. We bought a '90 model Geo Prism, 4 cyl from Barb's brother that lasted us a good long time and it had a lot of miles on it when we got it, but they were road miles. It was a great little car and had as much legroom as our '86 Lariat Ford F-150.:)

I just saw a Dodge Magnum today, and it certainly dropped my jaw. Looks a little bit like a "chopped and channeled" '51 Merc, but with a with a big hemi! Me likey! Wifey don't. :=(( The '94 Jimmy is needing a new set of tires, and I'm thinkin', 'what's going to be the next...?' It's been a great vehicle, but perhaps it's time for something more civilized.
