My knowledge of watches is equal to Jerry's knowledge of computers. Anyways I went to get my current watch repaired today and looked at several Tag Heuer watches that caught my eye.

Are there any Hogs out there who also like watches? If so would you recommend this brand or suggest staying away from them?

I have about a dozen MA's and are impressed with them. Tag's are good but I think you might like the MA's

I've never heard of them before....I'll go look them up.

Tag is very nice, but a bit pricey. I p/u a nice Tissot Ti. with a variety of functions.Very light, and priced more reasonable. Also like the Luminox Stealth, all black, that I p/u. Have Tritium vials for night view. Would like to get a Tag crono, but $$$

I looked through a bunch of Tissot but didn't like any once I tried them on. I have a Seiko kinetic auto-relay now so I was looking at the Tag automatics. I liked how quiet the motion was in the Tag compared to my Seiko...you couldn't hear it at all.

Tag watches are watches for people who really want to buy an expensive watch and don't rally care what they get.

The quality of the materials and finish can vary by model, but it ranges from subpar to just acceptable. Nothing above just acceptable, at least not that I've seen.

They are sort of the Walmart and Mcdonalds of high-end watches, inasmuch as they are everywhere and recognized by just about everybody but that's about it. I (and many other watch guys) consider them to be on the rung below Seiko and Citizen. At least Seiko and Citizen make their own movements, TAG doesn't even do that much.

If all you want is something to tell the time and look nice than a Tag will work out fine. If you want a bit more than that I'd look elsewhere. Perhaps a lightly used Omega or (saving a bit of money) a top of the line Citizen Eco-Drive?

EDIT:
Stay away from Montres Allison watches. They are blatant garbage. You can find the same watches with the same Chinese movements selling on ebay for $20.

Hmm, that sounds like a warning to stay away from Tag if I've ever heard one, lol :)

You mentioned Omega? Is that a brand or a model under someone's brand?

Echo what Fishbulb said! Omega is a brand in it's own right and part of a large conglormerate of watchbrands as well! (Very long story!)
I would definetely go for an Omega instead of a TAG Heuer even though you'll most likely fínd the same brand of movement in them (ETA). The quality and level of finish does vary though, as the factories can buy the same model ETA movement in different qualities.
Confused enough? Good! :p If Omega doesn't rock your boat, take a look at Eterna (excellent watches, but not nearly as known as Omega), Sinn or Fortis. (depending on what style you prefer)
Very few watchbrands make their own movements anymore and those who do will cost you quite a bit of money! (apart from Seiko, which BTW is a very good choice both in the mechanical and quartz version!)
And don't let anybody say I didn't warn ya..........but take a look at this site: www.timezone.com

Have fun! :D

What a freaking cool site!! Oh and as for Omega.....pretty pretty stuff :) I need to find a dealer so I can go seem some in person.

Off to Gadgets n Gear.......

Good topic, but it belongs there.

Man I hope I don't start on watches like knives and flashlights..........

Omega all the way. I have the Omega Seamaster Professional Chronometer w/ blue face. High quality gear. You have to decide whether you want quartz movement which more much more accurate but held in less regard among watch people or a chronometer which is more complex and is generally more of an "analogue" piece of machinery.

A quartz movement is not considered as repairable. Resale is not as high. A chronometer or automatic is old school and uses a spring that stores energy and releases it ...turning all the gears. Highly repairable and holds greater esteem among people who love watches.

Omega engineers and makes their own movements. TAG uses off the shelf movements. High quality ones I believe but in my recent search for my watch, EVERYONE agreed that TAG was overpriced...although a very good watch.

Limes makes some good watches that are well priced but less well known than Omega or Rolex

Another vote for Omega. Outstanding quality.

Seiko's automatics have a pretty solid reputation too.

My Seiko has been nothing short of rock solid and dependable. Today's repair was nothing more than a broken pin. I made the mistake of shopping while waiting for the repair...should have just sat on the bench :)

for Omega. I have a Omega Seamaster Pro made 08 May, 2002. I ordered the COSC report from Omega (which means basically zero). It works great day after day.
Also wear the Marathon SAR, another good "tool" watch, although maybe getting a bit pricey.
Both have done quite fine by me. I would still lean towards another Omega if I was lucky enough to be in the market for another watch. :p
