O/T: Tag Heuer Watches...Good? Bad?

I used to repair Tag watches. And I assure you they are not worth the money. The internal components are decent but not great by any stretch of the imagination. They are flash for people who like style with no substance. They are nice looking, decent quality watches but they are not built to be tough, even the ones that are sold as such. If you want tough get something different. Omega and even Seiko are tougher than Tags.

seiko last forever, my dad had one for 12 years, wore it every day and just changed batteries every couple of years. Those things are built like a tank. Makes you wonder how they do it. I used to be into rolex but after seeing a seiko thats lasts forever, im not into watches anymore. I feel like im getting taken for spending big money on high end watches. My ego is fine; so a can get by with a 40.00 watch.

Another good watch to look at is Breitling. Spendy but very nice watches. I agree that there are a LOT of good Seiko's and other great watches. I think the biggest difference may be in the band and pins. Go to a good "watch oriented" jeweler and have them replace your pins with Rolex/Omega/Breitling pins and you will never worry about them again. I put a sweet Breitling leather band and pins on a Seiko Kinetic dive watch and it looks so sweet. The leather band bares no resemblence to the pitiful department store leather. That band set me back more than a nice pair of shoes though

I saw a Breitling while I was in Vegas a few weeks ago. I think it was the "Hercules" model? Does that sound familiar? Great watch and not too bad of a price if I recall correctly. All they had was a Blue dial, I wouldn't mind seeing it in black.

I just recently (within the past year) got into "good" watches and I have to agree stay away from the Tags. There are many other watches in the same price range or a little more that are far superior.

Here's some pictures of my current collection

And yes, it can get very expensive, reallllly fast!

I wear an Omega Seamaster Pro Chronometer just like the center watch in the picture above. It's an awesome automatic. In the Omega/Breitling/Rolex comparison I think the Omega line has the most bang for the buck. I've had several friends take their Rolexes off hteir wrists to compare to my Omega and all came away impressed with the Omega's overall fit and finish. To compare the bracelets and latches is so see the difference.

If you fall in love with a Seamaster Pro, or perhaps even a Conestallation model Omega, you might be able to find one you like at Costco for a significant discount. The selection is limited, but the deals are good. I couldn't find the one I wanted there so I got mine elsewhere. As far as I know, even the entry level Omegas use an OEM movement by ETA but it is processed and modded to Omega's specs and is COSC certified as a Cronometer.

For an entry level automatic watch, the O&Ws seem to offer a nice option and not be as common as a Seiko (also great value). Something like this:

There's also a guy named Bill Yao who does custom jobs on Seikos and will give you something unique for a fair price.

Stay away from www.timezone.com if you value your money because those guys can help make it go away faster than knife forums:)

Had a Seiko dive watch I gave away when I left active duty. I've had my Tag for over 10 years and it's been great. When I went to the middle east last year it's what I took. Just my .02 worth.

Just my topic. :D Rolex is the ultimate imho.
I have worn SEIKOs for many many years without problems. My current watch is a SEIKO Divers model SKXA33. I am a purist when it comes to watches and so it is an Automatic (mechanical self-winding). I have a couple of Casios also.

I don't like Tag Heuers.
Breitling is also a very good brand, as is Omega, Tissot, Bulova, Certina, Citizen, IMC to mention but a few that come to mind.

Good luck with your shopping!!!

my omega constellation has been ticking for 17 years, been looking at a sinn....but havent decided whether it will be an upgrade or not?

TAG- not worth the money for the quality
Seiko- very nice, both quartz and mechanical versions; a true bargain
Omega- same statement as Seiko above but 1 step higher
Rolex- drastically overpriced; as good as or slightly lesser quality than Omega for 3 times the price
IWC- Truly a bargain in high end watches and the only thing you'll find on my wrist; definitely try to fine a pre-owned one; quality is evident everywhere.

DN........Stay away from IWC!!!! I tell ya, those watches will steal your soul! Had a damn close call some years ago and the only thing that saved me was a serious lack of money! :D Awesome stuff!
And a heartfelt /&#"%!!! to Lenny for making me think of them again! :p :D

I found some online and they do look like nice watches. Today I've also found several Omegas that I like as well..thanks to who ever suggested them first. At the top of my list is the Omega Aqua Terra, it looks like a gorgeous watch!!

You want a gorgeous watch, check out the newest version of the Breitling Cockpit, with black face and gold subdials. Definitely my next watch...someday.

WOW!! I can't believe watches like this exist. Went to Breitling's website and found the cockpit..I love it! However I would take the "Steel" version rather than the "Two Tone".

There's onlllly one little problem with the "Cockpit." I handled one at a local jewelry store and the retail for them is over $4000. Thats why its on a real long term wish list.

The Citizen Eco-Drive was mentioned...I have the Citizen 300m Promaster Eco-Drive Professional Dive Watch (the "Ecozilla"), and eventho' it's as big and thick as a old-style wall-clock, and weighs about as much as a small car, I really like this one.

Another vote here for Omega, and also consider Sinn. Both are very high quality and reasonably priced watches.

I've got a Sinn EZM-1 and it's a great timepiece. Very well built and lightweight with it's all titanium construction. It also has the venerable Lemania 5100 movement. I've been very pleased with it.

I've had a few TAGs -- from their late '80's low end quartzes to recent Kirium autos. They do a great job on cases, bracelets, and faces. The quartz I still have, and it's been a workhorse that's been treated poorly and never disappointed. The Kirium I sold because it kept poor time and the power reserve was lousy. They are decent watches, but you're paying for their marketing not their technology.

I moved to Omega (SMP auto) and it was a fine timepiece. I was also disappointed in accuracy. Like the TAGs, they are not uncommon and there are many similar designs as well as knockoffs. I see similar watches on everyone's wrists. Sold the SMP.

Right now I'm a fan of Sinn. Much less common. More of a tool watch, but in their own way they attract more attention than some of the bling watches I've owned. My current 756 keeps the best time of any auto I've owned.
