O.T. Wound management...

I'm still trying to figure out how you get "bit" by a tomahawk. Where'd you get bit Bruise? And please don't say on the knuckles/back of the left hand, or I'll know what you were doing. I've seen plenty fellows slip with a hawk/hatchet while splitting kindling. I'm not implying that's what happened to Bruise, he was probably turning somersaults with a two hawk technique as part of "Bruise Jitsu".;)

However, if you do find yourself having to split lots of small kindling with a hawk or a khuk, it's safest to rig an expedient holding fixture. Cut a "V" notch in the side of a dead log. With the notch facing you, stand your wood to be split up in it and swing away. Since the wood will stand up by itself, your off hand will be well clear of sharp swinging steel. Done right, the log will catch your khuk/hawk blade before it can hit any dirt or rocks and be dulled. Nothing new, but may be useful info for new khuk users.

Maybe it was his first time using one and he was holding it by the wrong end. :D

Nope... I was finishing the handle with some steel wool. Holding the axehead towards me with the left hand and steel wool in the right. Originally the blade was facing down and I was finishing one side with great vigor. Eventually that side was complete so I rotated the handle putting the edge face up. So I impaled the underside of my wrist with the lower point of the blade. My first thought was, "Oooo, that felt deep." :(

The hole was clean, about 1 cm long and 1 cm deep. No loss of motion or feeling for the hand so I didn't go for stitches. Walosi is to blame for my mishap ;)

m3 iz dum.

Bruise,
It sounds like you didn't do much damage so you should be okay. However I would clean it real well and close the wound with some "Steri-strips". To clean it I would get some PhisoDerm soap and mix it 50/50 with Hydrogen peroxide. Get it down into the wound as best as you can(it may sting a little). Then I'd dry it with a clean gause pad and apply the Steri-strip, You'd probably only need half a strip(cut that in two apply across the wound). Then I'd keep an eye on it. Keep it clean, dry and covered with clean bandages. You should be fine. If it starts getting inflamed, hot to the touch or start developing "streaks" going up from the wound get to the Doc ASAP.
Good luck!
Mike

Lord, I can't remember the name of that horrible brown stuff we used in the hospital for wounds...it's a standard, looks like tobbaco juice though and stains. Betadyne? Been too long for me. That stuff will kill anything.

Bruise is your tetanus shot up to date? If not, it would be advisible to update it.
Lockjaw would be bad, even for a Saudi.:p  ;)

Hope you heal up okay.

Pappy

What ever kind it was, it must have been sharp ! Who said Bruise can't sharpen stuff? :D

I worked in a pharmacy for seven years, and the advice folks have given has been exactly what the pharmacists told our customers.
Clean the wound well with water. Use peroxide if necessary, not alcohol. Use butterfly bandages or wound closures to close it up.
If it is a puncture, soak it in a betadine solution once a night until it heals over. The bottle of betadine will tell you how to mix the solution, it's usually 10%. This seeps in and kills any germs, and a saline solution (tablespoon of salt in a few cups of warm water) will work in a pinch.
If your tetanus shot is out of date, get one. It's cheap insurance for us folks that swing blades around.
The vitamin E oil and rubbing the newly formed scar both work. Rubbing it sends blood to the area and this keeps more tissue from dying or toughening up. Vitamin E softens the skin and keeps it from drying out.
I have a barely noticeable scar on my thigh from when a Benchmade CQC7 tanto bit me (the whole point went in under the skin) and the vitamin E oil took care of it.
Take care and I hope you heal up well!

Thanks for the pharmecutical advice. I'll probably go get some of those things after work today. For next time. :(

The hole is healing well, no redness and no chunks of dead skin or discomfort when poked. It also smells good. Or at least as bad as I usually smell. I figure that these are all good signs.

I poked myself with a Slasinsky spike hawk from Ragweed forge. It was less from the sharpness of the hawk than the inherent pointiness of the edge.

I also wore an in-line skating wrist brace for a night to keep my wrist from moving around (as not to split the wound open again). Was this a good idea?

And yes, I need a tetnus shot and maybe a few others too.
