Obsessive compulsive Knife buying

It doesnt bother me and I have the money. I just opened my safe and said holy **** when I realized how many knives and how many duplicates I have. I have done good though and only bought 1 this month. I do a lot of Ebay shopping and I guess that is the problem. How can you turn down a Sog seal 2000 for $55.00,a Tigershark for $70.00, a next generation D2 Ka-Bar with eagle sheath for $60.00, a CS Trailmaster for $90.00. I am always catching deals like this and its very hard to pass them up. O well they always increase with value and they are a tangible good if I ever need the money. I can always pass them on to my kids. Ha I guess its time to buy more guns now. Thanks for the replies everyone.

Whew!! You had me worried for a sec. 200'ish, eh:D That gives me some comfort - I have room - I'm only at 130'ish.....:) Production folders, that is:p In reality, it doesn't bother me that much and I'm also one that can afford it as well. I don't have that many duplicates, per se, but every once in a while, I go into "withdrawal" - you know, you go snooping, just can't find anything to buy, money burning a hole in your pocket and then you spin wildly into something else? Did that with lights - got to about 10'ish, and then back into knives. Tools are a "given" - always getting those. Recently, there just wasn't anything that really caught my eye - I feel I am getting better about selection vs use vs costs - so despite the fact that I had the money, getting a more expensive blade still didn't make sense to me - soooooooo I started into slippies. I do have a few already, but in a matter of a few weeks I've gotten a few - couple of Camillus - large stockman, one called the Stockman Tobacco Knife, a Queen Dark Cherry Canoe/D2, Buck 371 (already own a Treo), plus some others. I REALLY, REALLY like that Queen:D I can already see more Queens/Schatts coming and those Bokers look good as well. So now it's worse - there are couple from Spydie I want, plus somewhere in there I intend to acquire a BM Presidio, probably a Vex. However, I'm not crazy - the voices have told me so:D

You fink, I've been looking all over my area for a BK-7 to add to my meager collection, and here you're hoarding all of them.

That's it, you have to send me one as penance. The only way you'll kick this disorder is to start getting rid of those pesky Beckers. Remember, if you love something, set it free...

Nah, that's not OCD, it's just called being passionate about your hobby. That's all. Rest easy guys.

OCD would be not being able to put a knife down until you'd opened and closed it one, two, three, four, five times, or something along those lines.

Just passionate that's all. Just passionate.

:D

Obsessive-compulsive knife buying is perfectly normal for us knife knuts!

I would worry if I didn't. THAT would be abnormal!:D:p:D

I like to buy multiples of one knife or gun, just so that I have them forever even if I wear one out, lose, or break a few. I have (4) 4" S&W K-frame revolvers (a nickel 19, 2x model 65s, and a model 66) a pair of J-frames, and a pair of Remington 870s (I'm about to get a third J-frame and 870). I discovered Emerson knives a few weeks ago, got a Commander and a Karambit to test them out. Then I got a Super CQC-7, my second '7 comes next week. I think I'll get another Super 7 next, then a second regular '7. Then my wife will "hint" that I'd better get that remote starter for her car in time for snow, and some jewelry or something.

I think it's normal to have backups to everything (except for wives *she's watching me*)...

The definition of wealth is consumption. At least you are not gambling your money away or spending it on drugs (I hope). I would probably get doubles of all the knives and get a wider variety. One to use and one to put away.

If I could afford it I would buy duplicates.
At the rate I buy knives right now I haven't even decided what my favorite handle and blade designs are. Once I get that sorted out I'll probably have a few of my favorite model.

Except for Mora's, I am usually happy with just two of everything. I must be related to Noah.

And here I thought I was the only one.

Wow.

It's always great to tell your therapist about such obsessive
compuslive behavior and watch them suddenly grab all the
scissors and letter openers and shove them into a drawer,
all the while trying to appear calm.

Yeah, I've got stainless Security-Sixes, two of 'em in each barrel length! Now that they're only
making heavy, bulky .357s, I'm glad I bought my stash. The trouble is, one Security-Six will
last anyone a lifetime. When I was in my twenties, I didn't think they'd outlast me!

At my age now, a 30-year warranty on my bed mattress isn't really a selling point if you
get my drift.

Who says you can't take 'em with ya?

I'm up to my 163rd knife. In a little less than 2 months. I think I'm going insane... :(

Frank.

ashtx- Have you discovered Bark Rivers yet? My favorite, the Bravo -1 comes in about 40 different handle variations, not to mention all the other models they make. The voices in my head keep telling me I need every one of them. This could be dangerous for someone in your situation. Perhaps we weren't held enough as infants or something and we are filling a void, or trying to that is?? :)

In all seriousness, the main question would be "is your knife-buying negatively affecting your life"?

Is knife spending hurting you financially?

Is shopping for knives disrupting the time you would spend with loved ones, in other hobbies, or keeping your life in order?

Do you feel that you're buying knives in an attempt to fulfill an unrelated void in life? Has it become a crutch to help you deal with other problems?

If you look over your situation and say "nope, I just like buying lots of knives, and it's not causing me any problems", then it's probably okay. The fact that you came here to actually ask about it might indicate that you have some concerns about it.

I'm not a psychologist or anything, it's just that most of these obsessive issues seem to use pretty much the same AA-style survey to figure out if it's actually a problem in your life.

Lately I've been buying and trading like crazy. Picked up two of the same knife, just different handle materials and blade finish, a Dennis Cook Huntsman. Was going to put up my handrubbed satin finish with stabilized wood handles, but decided to put up my other one, a bead blasted Huntsman with desert micarta handles. Now, I've decided to trade for two new knives, models I've owned before. A satin 610 Rukus and an Endura 4. I've had about two or three Endura 3's, and one Endura 4 already. I've gotten a thing for Camillus demo folders now, I have a 94 and an 02. Traded for a SOG Trident and the demo 02 yesterday. Got a cocobolo Seb on the way. Getting my production knives customized. Getting a Tusker from Scott Gossman, getting one of his new models next month, probably going to get an EDC from him. Got a Houndstooth coming from Barker in January, and a Bob Dozier KS7 in April.

And I don't want to sell anything. Nothing. I am happy where I am right now! I never knew how much I loved Ramen cup a soup :D.
