It sounds more like manic behavior than OCD.

One characteristic symptom of mania is spending a lot of money that one
does not have; borrowing it, using credit unwisely, using savings unwisely...

OCD is an anxiety disorder.
One who's afflicted with the disorder has obsessions (thoughts which cause extreme
discomfort; even panic) - and then compulsively acts to quell the thoughts.
If they cannot perform the compulsive act to quell the obsession, the person
can become extremely distraught and confused to the point of actual disability.
It is treatable, however. As is mania (the "up" side in manic depression.)

True "Obsessive Compulsive" behavior is extremely serious shit; unfortunately the phrase has found
its way into pop culture and become almost meaningless.

Sorry to get a little heavy where there's a nice jocular tone happening,
but I've worked with this stuff and it is in fact pretty heavy.

Very intelligent input above. - - I'm no professional, but I think a factor in determining if a person might just be a collector or have deeper issues is if their habits cause problems in their life. That is, if the money spent on the knives isn't a financial problem for a person, or cause any difficulties in their job or personal relationships than theyre likely o.k. - - We've seen those human interest stories on t.v. where some lady is collecting some kinda doll or whatever. Usually, I don't get the attraction she has for whatever doodad she's in to. But, if she's happy, has a balanced life, and her hobby doesn't cause any problems for her (and might even add to the quality & enjoyment of her life) than what's the harm ? I don't think that its a matter of having X number of doodads, but how the behavior
impacts one's life. Its probably also true that a behavior doesn't have to rise to the level of being an official psychological malady in order for it to be dumb. Look at how many Americans spend more than they earn and are heavily in debt. Good luck to you, - -

P.S. - - if you haven't already done so, check out Mora type knives. Great cutters and only about $10 each. Of course, a guy could spend alot of money on anything - but the pile of Moras would be a lot cheaper than most decent knives !
