Odd ball patinas... Updated with my attempts at etching (pic heavy on pg2)

Since it only reacts with the blue some painters tape to cover the areas while bluing, then once the bluing dries apply the bleach, there shouldn't be any reaction anywhere the blue aint

So im trying the cold blue and bleach etching technique as we speak. Ive patterned the 9 and a custom. fingers crossed. The pic is of the blade submerbged in bleach. I will update with finished pics

The 9 and the 11 are still soaking but the custom is out, and after some sanding (it creates a rust coating over the blue) it turned out like this. im very psyched about this. as you can see the patina is "etched" into blade and is permanent. Ill post up the 9 and 11 when they come out.

That is very cool looking. Was the bleach warm, cold, room temp, etc...?

Blade grind sanded to 600. Wrapped in paper towel and soaked in Worcestershire Sauce for about 20 mins then cleaned with soap and water and lightly coated with rem oil. Something different imo.

ok here are the 3 i did today. they look awesome with the 11 being my favorite. the 9 was too heavy in the container so the sides arent even but really when is corrosion even? anyways enjoy,

So did you blue then bleach, or what?

Ok heres what i did. Wash the blade, take an old sock (cotton ball would work but those are for my wifes makeup and my altoids tin so i didnt have extras) dab on blue in the pattern you want. in this case do not follow the instructions on the bottle, and let sit for a full 5 minutes (it may yellow) then drop in bleach. this creates poisonous gases so leave it out side. The longer you leave it in the deeper itll be. Each one of these was a different amount of time. The custom 20 minutes, the bk9 55 minutes, and the bk11 70 minutes.

When you take them out there will be a THICK coating of rust on em. scrape it off with a putty knife, then sand with 100 sandpaper, then 220. Then i reblue it to get the etchings darker, then sand again with 600 and up. i took it up to 1500. make sure to get all he rust off, it will hide in every crack and crevasse and it will continue to corrode if left on. Thanks for looking

Very nice Clich. One question. Did it do any damage the the edge by pitting it?

Think I am going to have to try this out. Where did you get the bluing from?

I got a bunch of it off both the bay and amazon. I use the stuff alot. Keep the blue off the edge cuz it will eat away at the blue no matter where it is. If you wanna do the etching on the whole blade, tape the edge, blue it, then remove the tape before putting in the bleach. The blue wont run through good tape and the bleach wont effect your edge in such a short period of submerging without the accelerator, the blue.

Yeh it is. I was lucky it wasn't in that long. On my nine I actually did it twice, first time was too short, it only had a very light etching, so i reblued and put it back in. That actually happened because of the blue/rust residue left from the first time in the bleach. If you look at the first pic with the knife submerged, you can see the blue wasn't ON the edge to start, close but not on, it was my mistake, I wasn't thinking before I dunked it again. So if you do it more than once, rinse the container and use new bleach to.

You get better as you practice. Ill chalk it up to first timer mistakes. :D

Awesome work! I'd never do this to my blades, but it looks awesome :D
Now they really are your own.

Beat me to it!
Nice man looks absolutely amazing! That custom looks 1000 years old. Very cool man!

Was just having it outside good enough to not kill yourself or did you use added protection?

Thanks guys.

My garage is fairly small and attached to the house, so I didn't wanna run the risk of any kinda gases getting in the house.
