Odd ball patinas... Updated with my attempts at etching (pic heavy on pg2)

How deep is the etching? It looks pretty shallow, which is what I would think would be ideal for a knife that is still a user.

Yeh its very shallow. I didn't want to make them brittle or weak in areas. Its just a nice surface etching. For good looks but doesn't screw with the knife function

Etched (cold blue+bleach as well as resist etching) and/or patina'd four blades this weekend. Tons of photos and comments to add to this thread once I'm out of the forest where squirrels have to carry my internet in byte by byte. Put my Beckerhead number on my BK11 and hawk :)

My biggest problem was with the blue+bleach.... the etching 'traveled' to all sorts of places on the blade nowhere near where I put the blueing. Kinda messed up my Warthog, actually, but my 11 turned out great.

little tip I've learned is spray down the blades with the origional Windex, the ammonia in it helps to stop the reaction. Quick easy way to kill the rust from forming before or after you do the sanding. That way gettign every single crevass isnt nearly so important

That's a good tip. I noticed when I was removing the rust and sanding, id go back to a spot I already thought was finished, just to see light rust again. My guess is it was still reacting, so the winded trick is helpful.

BRL did you use the same bleach? I noticed that small pieces left behind in the bleach attach themselves in places that I didn't want it to
