Of interest to Opinel fans

Yes, folks, show the french how appreciative you are about their support of terrorists and the hussein regime!

Were they not French, I'd be interested, but unfortunately for them...

The post was for Opinel knife fans YounCutter, not for those who support or hate the French (French Government?) I don't see the relevance of your post...

ichor: I had an Opinel once and I no longer have it only because I gave it to a person in trade. The thin blades sure to cut well! That little collection looks like a nice family.

You're right, YC.

But you didn't cover half of it.

In fact, the president of Opinel is the three of clubs in the "most wanted" deck.

Not only that, but the factory is actually being used to produce and store Saddam's weapons of mass destruction.

And as if that wasn't enough, it turns out that _every_last_one_ of the inhabitants of the town of Opinel are really Republican Guard reservists. Whood-a thunk?

...

Seriously, I love my Opinel, and if I lost it, I'd pick up another in a heartbeat.

On a related note, I was shocked to see that the Williams Sonoma store in my local shopping mall carries a handfull of Opinels as "French picnic knives". Kinda neat.

Allow me to clarify... I do not hate Opinel per se... nor do I harbor what I would call "Hatred" for the french, it's more of a disappointed loathing.

I boycott french products and I encourage all other Americans to do so to represent a general displeasure with the french nation and french government policies. When the french grow tired of having their economy sapped because a nation they hate won't buy their stuff, perhaps their tune will change and then, so will mine.

Until then, think of Opinel as a casualty of the situation, sort of like an enemy soldier. You don't hate them specifically, but you still have a job to do.

This kind of logic assumes that there is some monolithic French agenda, which doesn't seem likely.

Jacque Chirac is, at the least, the mouthpiece for the French government's anti-war stance. Maybe he would be a better target. He also is balding, so maybe add bald people to the list too.

…. but I’m pretty sure they’re not the same guy. :D ;) :p

I've yet to see these weapons of mass destruction appear....unless we define Opinels as WOMD. Hope the war wasn't a big fraud or anything..

Oh BTW the French gave us the Statue of Liberty, too...better tear it down...

Anyway, to stay on topic, Opinels are great little knives. There's not a better knife for customizing to fit your tastes. The handles are easily reshaped, and even the blade can be reshaped nicely. I've dropped the points on a couple of mine (don't really like the trailing point they come with) and it improves the performance and looks in my opinion. Ever since I was a kid, I've always wanted one of those sets with all the sizes...

At no time did I ever say Opinel was a poor product.

And whether or not we tear the statue of liberty down doesn't matter, as it doesn't affect their economics (the only thing that could possibly matter to a french politician).

At any rate, I'm through trying to justify my position to people who are trying to pigeonhole me into being some kind of fanatical bush-worshipper who hasn't applied any thought to this.

This will be my last post on this subject.

Well, YC, when you make an off topic, politically inspired statement on a forum like this one, you have to expect to be questioned, right? It's supposed to be about knives.

About knives? Well, if this forum is about knives, let me put in another good word for Opinel. I picked up a big one in trade, and it makes a great bread knife. Even if the bread is soft, it cuts through cleanly.

Incidently, I had a Williams Sonoma a few blocks away from me in New York, and they were my source of Opinels (along with a few other nice items!)

For all the store's elegance, their prices were fair, and occasionally excellent, on sale.

The only thing I boycott is boycotts. They always hurt the wrong people. The little old knifemakers whose wares have given me such pleasure will be hurt. Zhak Shirak will sniff past his fine Fwench sham-pain at a boycott.

Esav,

Glad you found a use for that big honkin' Opinel!

I had to double the postage to send it to you.

Dan ;)

Just because a company is French owned, doesnt mean they support the French government.
NOTHING wins the support of another country like Yankee dollars feeding sits economy.
Buy French, and take over their country via greenbacks ;) :)

I love my Opinel and would buy another without hesitation if I wasnt so broke.

Dan, I have a lot of knives, but very few make it to permanent status in the kitchen. The Opinels are a serious part of this elite.

satin, you must be in pretty rough shape if you can't afford an Opinel. BTW, I too boycott French products. They are not just a pissy disgruntled allie, they are our enemy. How quickly you guys forget their treachory.

The products are no one's enemy. The French are luxuriating in the sure and certain knowledge that, come what may, Uncle Sugar will always be there to rescue them from the fruits of their indolence. So are the Canadians. So are the Germans. So are many others. Business as usual is the best revenge. We will prosper and advance. They will sneer at our latest barbarism, and rush to catch up so they can have some, too.

We are not hurting them by boycotting pocketknives. "We" are only wallowing in self-righteousness, albeit no smarmier than theirs. :p
