Hey, how long does micarta take to set up? I added a couple extra drops of hardener to try and speed things up...

Mine is the black version, I wanted the green but they didn't have any at the time. Wana trade ;) Looks like my bonus that's coming on friday is already spent on knives!

so, a while back, i got some *clear* ACRYLIC cnc'ed scales from SH@RP that fit the BK14

pretty sweet

well, i just very carefully hand milled a small trench on the inside of one scale, and fitted a "glow vial", blue in color...

it works. works okay. just tried to take a picture, and succeed in getting a bit of a faint blue glow, with enough light over the exposure to see the texture of the scales a little, and the finger ring.

was hoping it would be brighter. though were i to drop my knife in a field or the woods, at darkest night, it would be clearly visible to the naked eye.

but i'm not going to post it yet. mostly because i think if i can get the tripod mounted up, and setup a GOOD shot, i might get something a little ... better. macro in the dark is hard, even at f/2.8

still. interesting experiment.

i'm probably now going to obtain some of that strontium aluminate glow power that one can find on that auction site, mix it with clear acrylic nail polish, and treat the inside of the scales with it. should be BETTER. will require a light source to activate. unless the acrylic can block UV ;) we'll see. could be an amusing hack.

that's all for now...

maybe better would be to have the thing CNC'ed to take a larger glow tube. i dunno.

best i think would be a thong on the knife, with a glow vial. perhaps an LED inside the handle.

I have some glow powder, and a did some glow spots on a couple knives as well as camping gear like ferro rod and flashlight. The downside is you have to charge it in the light. The upside is, you can mix it with epoxy and put it in any hole or divot. I think it looks sweet :)

the upside is that even a little sunlight charges it for a long time... the good powder supposedly can glow ridiculously bright for 3-6 hours, and all night for 6 more...

Depends on the ambient temp, and how many drops you put in. I never could get consisitency with that poly resin and wasted a lot of it. I switched over to a Bar top resin with a 1:1 mix ratio.

I used Bondo fiberglass resin, and I used 4oz of resin and 52 drops of hardener. I am using burlap as the medium. temperature in Alabama was 88 today, and around 60 tonight, but in my garage, around 70.

you think overnight should do it? How do I test it?

Yeah mine gives a faint glow all night, haven't really tested it in complete darkness. I also hit it with 150 lumens at dusk for a minute and your good to go :)

Time to head out of work. Man, sometimes I wonder why I got into IT as a career. Of course, the slow days are nice.
