Well, we are getting settled here in GA. I’m pretty stoked with the property, we are surrounded by woods and although I only have 4 acres, we have a decent sized lake. It’s fully stocked with bass and brim and hasn’t been fished in quite a while. I had another surprise…I thought it was a beaver (as I told Don Rearic), but found out the half-dozen critters are just large muskrats. I also thought they might be nutria due to their size, but I’m pretty sure they are just muskrats. I killed one with my M6 Scout, but couldn’t retrieve it as it flopped too far off shore before I could get to it but I didn't want to just wound the critter:o…my son and I have the boat out finally and will paddle out to get it this morning to confirm. Small game hunting on beaver in GA is year round, but if it’s a muskrat/nutria, I’ll have to pick up a trapping license to “harvest”. Good news is that I’ll get plenty of practice trapping and snaring! As long as I don’t see any problems from them, I’ll just continue to trim their population and maintain my skills. My son and I are going to scout out some good primitive camping areas along the lake for future use and I’ve spotted some decent locations for fishing and we will get an opportunity to practice our “survival” fishing techniques with our kits. All in all, I’m pretty excited…there’s still a lot of work to do settling in and some stuff around the house, but the “backyard” will provide a lot of entertainment for those much needed breaks.

This is literally stepping out the back door; the muskrat den is at the end of lake in this picture:

Another picture with my barn…needs some work, but is has plenty of power hookups, the breaker for the pump off the lake (used to water the garden) and a good concrete slab. It needs some more weatherizing in the main bay, but has a good sized walk in storage/work area. It also has a nice chicken coop area on the backside that needs to be cleaned up as we plan to raise some chickens.

Here’s a picture out of our front door. Our driveway is about 150 yards off the country road…plenty of privacy!

No more “urban survival” for me!

Awesome is the word that comes to mind for me:D. Very cool indeed.
What is the normal for the summer temps in your area?

Hot and humid:D I've been stationed here at Fort Gordon in the past (near Augusta, GA). It does get quite humid, but we've camped and backpacked in the summer and north of us in NE GA is a beautiful area that is much more comfortable during summer trips.

It's just been real wet right now, which is a welcomed change from Afghanistan ealier this summer.

Caine is just a few hours south of me in Columbus...same route that we take when we drive down to my wife's in-laws.

Lots of potential for around-the-house activities:thumbup:

Outstanding place, Rock. You can probably feel my envy through the internet. Great looking place.

That is great. It will be a fantastic everyday location, but a real winner if social decline continues. Congrats.

How far away from work are you ?

It's only 19 miles; about 25 minutes according to my wife. She use to commute from Fort Gordon (when we lived on post) out to the school where she did student teaching a few years aga.

Well, we found our lake occupant. Now, I have already been chastised for not retrieving this guy the other night...I didn't have the boat and couldn't get it from the bank (should have used that small grappling hook?). I don't like being wasteful, which is what this is which isn’t good stewardship. These guys are considered “pests” and with my small game hunting license, open all year, but they can be a very good asset if harvested/used properly. Anyways, they are beavers and monsters at that; this guy weighed in at 49 pounds!

I know I hit him with the .410 after I first shot him with the .22LR (using my M6 Scout). He was flopping bad after the .22LR and heading away from the bank and that's when I finished him with the .410 (Buckshot), but the only wound I found was just below the ear.

I was hoping they were muskrats, being a lot smaller and more likely to reproduce like rabbits; they would have been great for my son to trap and handle. He can't even pick this guy up by himself! Well, the good news is the beavers are no threat to my pond minus trimming the trees and ripping up some good roots. I wanted to plant bamboo, but will have to re-think that plan. I don't plan to eradicate them, but I will keep their population trimmed down some. Plus, it'll be good to teach my son how to skin and clean larger game than squirrels and fish before we going hunting next year for deer. I'll even check the local game office to see what their pelts are going for (probably not much), but then I'll have to get a trapping license to sell.

Rock,

When can I visit? ;)

Place looks pimpin'. Make sure you have a place for the eggs if your going to raise chickens - you will be sick of the deluge in a week.

Thats a beautiful peice of land you have there and a nice pond....Congrats on your property. Its hard to find land in the area with a pond. I remember you talked about being around the Thomson area? There are a couple of WMA's up there I used to hunt deer on...Thats really pretty up there...congrats.
