Off Topic, What else are you into?

I'm studying history and anthropology (I want to specialize in archeology).

I'm a great lover of my country's rural traditions, and I spend as much time out of the city working with my horses as I possibly can. I'm basically a city born country boy. :-)

I enjoy reading very much, and building a good library on my favourite topics is another hobby of mine. I like to look for old and rare books, knives and books are probably my main expenses.

Traditional archery has been a passion of mine since I was a small kid. I've got three bows (one was a gift from a friend's grandfather, the night before he died he asked me to "keep it hunting"), two recurves and a custom longbow. I'm in love with that longbow, it's perfect.

Since I like hunting and generally spending time outdoors I try to volunteer with my local SAR team as part of the mounted SAR unit. It gives me more dirt time, some cool training and the chance to help somebody out from time to time.

My day job is actually more like three part time jobs. :-) I train horses, I teach English and I' a board member at the Buenos Aires SAE clubhouse (www.saexplorers.org).

After I get my degree I'm going to move out of Buenos Aires, either to the mountains where my grandad lived or to the farm in the plains where my dad lives now (he's a judge but he only travels to the city when he's got a trial, he does the rest of his work sitting by our corn fields).

Security manager at a South African Gold Mine, also very involved in the Army Reserve Forces (your National Guard) Infantry Regiments (www.jocks.co.za) and making knives is an absolute passion:

I am a 23 year old college student, and work as a handyman. In the very little free time I have I try to get out and do some hiking, I also play bass and restore and remaster old recordings. Knives are an expensive hobby and leave me very little money to collect other things.

I test software - actually, a bit more than that - Sr. Test Analyst for a software development company in control systems. We are ISO 9001 certified, so that means paperwork/audit trails:) Knives are just one piece of my "other life" - leatherwork is in there a bit. Also do some renovation stuff (also have revenue properties - so I also collect tools:) ) - currently doing some upgrading to our house, finally:D Another big passion is playing pool (8-ball) - two leagues a weeks and getting ready for the National in 'Vegas. I just turned 57 - both sons have been out of the house for a few years now. All the extra stuff always gets pushed aside when my grandson comes for a visit. Having a ball being a grandpa, but dang - I thought things were supposed to slow down and I was supposed to have more time when I got a bit older. Grandson turned two last November, and it seems like he was just born:eek:

I take my relaxation one small piece at a time;) and love the time spent out in the woods with my family and friends when we can.

How about you jackknife? Retired, still working?

Of course, I should have said something about myself. I guess I started this thread because of the almost family like genteel mannors here, I thought it would be nice to know one another a bit better.

Me. Okay, 66 year old retired machinist. Retired in 2001 on a disability. Blew out my right rotator cuff. Graduated high school in 1958, joined the army in 1960, medical discharge in 1972, same year I married a little gal that cought my eye on a shooting range. Three children, three grandchildren, and I spend an increasing amount of time with them. My main loves, aside from family; rimfire shooting, walking in the woods with my wife of three and a half decades and our dog, Pearl the wonder corgi, a little more shooting, kayaking on local lakes and Potomac river, nature watching with our binoculars while woods walking and kayaking, bicycling on parts of the C&O Canal Trail that runs from Cumberland Maryland to Washington D.C. (184 miles of National Park.), reading all kinds of books from the library, some more shooting. We use up between 4 and 5 boxes of 550 round bulk Federal .22's from Walmart every month. Also lots of pellets.

I spend alot of time coaching my granddaughter Christy, who shoots in competition in both air rifle and small bore 50foot N.R.A. matches.

In 2002 both Karen and I gave up motorcycling, as with some arthritus problems the bikes were getting to be a little much to handle. We bought Vespa motorscooters and never looked back, we've been having so much fun with them on day trips everywhere we used to ride our bikes. Karen's sister Diane and brother in law Roger has also done the same, and we call ourselves "The Mild Ones".

Since Karen joined me in retirement a couple years ago, life has been a ball.

Since alot of our family activities include fishing, kayak and canoe camping on the river, hikes in the woods, there is ample chance for me and my grandson Ryan, to use our traditional pocket knives.

I'm 33, work in publishing here in NYC and play hooky alot! I spend most of my time smokeing good cigars and watching TV.

Infantry LT. Finishing up OBC and preparing for Ranger school.

I like cigars, pipes, working out, and I used to compete in Muay Thai.

I was on a kick several years ago with building "Ultimate" Ruger 10/22 rimfire rifles. Put together about 5 and sold 3 of them. I gave the best two to my boys (men) years ago. Got into Bass fishing about 2 yrs ago. Got some nice pricey rods and reels. Starting to lose interest in the fishing thing, at least maybe sell off some of my stuff. About 5 yrs ago I was into Case Classic Whittlers. I have a nice selection with one of each pattern and each in Stag. Thinking about selling those off too. These hobbies are getting too expensive.

Well, I work at Gatorland in Orlando Florida. My job entails handling creep crawly bugs and arachnids, venomous snakes, non venomous snakes, and wrestling alligators. I am one of the entertainers there, and we put on shows throughout the day, so for me to come home and talk about wrestling three gators during the day, or handling a cotton mouth, diamond back rattlesnake, and burmese python is a normal occurance. Why just last night I come home from a local hotel/convention center, where we do a gator feeding shows three nights week, with two 5 foot gators, and they stayed in our living room. In a bag of course. I took them to work this morning. My wife is so used to me bringing gators or snakes home for the night. So are my neighbors, many of which I have scared over the years. I met my wife working there. I was doing the Gator Wrestling show and she was a guest in the audience. She saw me, and thought I was funny and cool, cause I was on a gator. I saw her in the audience and fell in love right away. I remember staring at her while doing the show, just on autopilot really, paying more attention to her then anything else, until the gator bucked under me and I realized "Oh yeah, I am on the back of an 8 foot alligator. Concentrate, man, concentrate." One thing led to another and a year and 9 months later, we got married.... AT the Gator wrestling arena. As for hobbies? I train animals. At work we train alligators and crocodiles to respond to their names and certain commands. At home I'm training my dog and looking into starting my own dog training business. I also want to start a self defense consulting business. I taught martial arts for over 15 years, and the one thing I realized was that there are alot of schools out there that teach you how to punch and kick. Not many go indepth on what to do BEFORE n altercation takes place. What to look for. Where to walk. HOW to walk. How to carry your purse if your a woman. How to park under a street light instead of the dark, far end of the parking lot. The little things that usually get you in trouble. These are the things I want to show people so they can protect themselves long before they need to get physical. Other then performing in front of guests, training animals, and looking at my knives, personal protection is a pasion of mine. Things I will eventually pass on to my 2 month old daughter. That and how to handle an alligator!! LOL.

PS. Hey Jackknife, if you're ever in Florida, or come to the Orlando area, hit my up. I'll get you into the park and show you a good time. Hey, we are all family here, right? Family doesn't have to pay!! Aw heck, that goes for all of ya.

I've managed to resist posting on this until now but, in a former life, I was often called upon to be a final moderator and negotiator. I find the discourses in these forums a hoot. I taught Wilderness Navigation and Flyfishing (3 levels) at a community college after hours because it was rewarding and because I had to learn more to be a worthwhile instructor.

I've built a few houses for my family in my "spare time". Throughout them all, I used a 3.25" closed Craftsman stockman (it never failed me) except when a Stanley utility was needed for wreckless abuse. I suspect it is a Schrade.

I hunt, flyfish, tie flies, reload, backpack, shoot, and make a few knives from blanks for myself and for gifts. I enjoy making sheaths to my own preferences
so it adds another dimension to my favorite blades.

I most enjoy hunting over the German Shorthaired who owns me. I hope he values our friendship as much as I do. I sometimes wonder because he actually gives me "the look" when I miss.

I enjoy blades because they are so integral to my hobbies and I enjoy using good equipment as much as the activity it supports. By the way, I'm fortunate that Wifey fully supports my pastimes and encourages me to enjoy them all except mountaineering. That's OK because I would now discourage most everyone from doing what we used to do among the peaks. I miss it though...

My real name is (no kidding) Rambo.

that's me.

ElCuchillo that's awesome!

Also, it's really great to get to know what everyone does...
what a diverse bunch of people! This is great!

I'm a 50 yr old pharmacist. I like blues and jazz music, and smoking cigars. I also enjoy hunting and hiking. I also never met a bottle of wine I didn't like!!!:D

ElCuchillo, You're sitting on the back of an alligator and I see no visible knife! What's up with that? I can only assume that your hands are lethal weapons. Awesome pics!!

Elcuchillo, I have to say that being as I live in Louisiana where we have a bunch of alligators... and being not too far from Baton Rouge where we have a bunch of LSU Tiger fans... well... obviously that must be a FLORIDA Gator, because that would explain how you are able to manhandle him so easily...........

ok - that's just for laughs. I was cheering for the Gators last year in the BCS game, but I didn't tell anyone around here!
