Same end vs. opposite end is hard for me to assess without a sample of the Jack version. Not because I can't visualize a Jack, but because things like one blade being much higher in that configuration vs. the opposite-end version are unknowns without seeing the knife.

I'm for comfort in hand above almost all else. That's one reason I usually for single blades: no secondary digging into my hand while I'm using the primary (or vice versa).

The 2015 forum knife was excellent in this regard.

Any chance of a sample Jack, skblades skblades ?

I voted Clip and Sheepsfoot same end, and owe supratentorial supratentorial an apology for not noting he was the first to propose the pattern - sorry Jake

I'm not sure about splitting the 2-blade vote. My second choice wouldn't be an Equal End, not least because we had one, in the same configuration, just a few years ago. So my second choice would be a Stockman

Jack, Sorry for the confusion. I suggested 2 blades. I assumed they would be on OPPOSITE ends. Later, Charlie suggested 2 blades on the SAME end.

I'm not sure if same side works well with the 301. Are you guys taking into account that the clip blade is quite short?

There will be a lot of empty space on the other end if the blades aren't on opposite sides.

If you have side by side nicks with a Clip/Sheepfoot arrangement it's likely to be difficult. Sheepfoot are wider than Pen blades so the Clip will have to ride very high I assume. Buck Stockman have very nice low riding Sheepfoot and I just think this Jack configuration will compromise that as well:rolleyes:

Gotcha. That cools me on the jack configuration considerably (and I wasn't that fond of it to begin with). I'd still buy one, but it would probably never become a favorite for me.

Come on, opposite ends!

Yes, if I'm visualizing things right, I think a pile side nail nick will be necessary on the sheepfoot. I generally don't have a preference when it comes to that, except I like lower riding blades.

I like the idea of a Jack knife. It will be a unique Buck knife. On the other hand, I can appreciate the arguments made for the aesthetics and ergonomics of the opposite end configuration. On the other, other hand, If we do that, why not just make it a stockman? I'm going to have to sleep on this one, but whichever it is, I'll buy it. :)

Right you are Jake! And not only this but think what it will look like from the inside...look at a 309 by contrast, nicely filled and no blade rub because they don't need krinking.

Thanks, Will

To add more fuel to the fire, my guy at Buck is rooting for the 2 blade opposite end. Very rare he says.

I've been playin around with a 301 and I clearly see the aesthetic point of view. Without shortening the frame or lengthening the blades a 301 jack will likely appear awkward. I originally believed a jack would be a slam-dunk but now like one of our wiser members just stated, "I'm going to have to sleep on this one, but whichever it is, I'll buy it." :)

Edit; A 301 with 2 (standard) blades on the same end will leave a considerable amount of empty space in the blade well so, I've changed my vote for a two blade opposite end.

I’m good with however this turns out, cool stuff going on here!
I voted for 3 blades, but wonder if they could be configured more like a traditional stockman with the clip and sheepsfoot on the same pin and Spey blade on the opposite end? Just curious...

A long sheepsfoot blade would allow for a mark side nick. It could be the whittler's trapper jack :thumbsup:

Yes, I like your idea Kevin!! With a longer blade a proper Jack could be produced on the Buck 301 frame.
As long as we're considering a longer blade make mine a lambsfoot (or wharncliffe), as both are a straight edge but they sit lower in the frame than a sheepfoot. Just spitballin... let me know if it goes to a vote. ;):)

Not sure what to vote for so I just went for standard Stockman but may change to 2 opposite or same after I look at it more
