Official BK18 Harpoon Thread

Here’s group shot with my other clean 17...

That's a great comparison shot, and demonstrates what I've always said....: "straight clip eats your lunch". :D

In all honesty, I don't really see where there's much difference cutability wise between the 16, 17, and 18. About the same amount of edge on all three. I'm not talking about piercing wise, just cutting wise.

If you measure the sharpened edge the 18 has under a half inch ... closer to a quarter inch ... more edge than the 16 ... so you're correct in that. (non exactly quick measurement)

I see what you mean with the 16 and 17 but with the 18, you have that large belly. I think itll be great in the kitchen doing the ol rock chop. I see it also being a better slicer with that continuous curve. Maybe we will see some comparative use of them in the future. It would be nice if someone measured the length of the cutting edge to see how they measure up.

edit: I see jj colt45 already measured

Good point about the ffg. Slicer may have been a bad word choice on my part. Im thinking of a method of use, using the bellys full length to drag across the meat. Though with the ffg of the 16, itll just slice right through the meat, no need to run the meat down the length of the blade.

Yes, BK15 and 16 geometry is sliciest by the numbers. 17 and 18 will wedge more. Tho the 18 has a more natural curve to the edge. I tend to prefer higher grinds for cutting efficiency, but the 17 and 18 have nice stout tips which are good for abusive environments.

I suspect the long continuous curve of the 18's cutting edge will offer better food prep performance.
much like the old trade knives and roach belly knives.
the harpoon is also starting to grow on me from looking at pictures -- it looks like it might work as a pot lifter.

Sheeese...with all this eye candy I may have to get my first tweener... nice edge and blade profile for nice small and inner work (to be nice I didn't say getting in the guts of literal big critter cutting when getting out the internal yucky stuff like intestines, bladder, poop tube, and this theoretical liver that people say they have that never seems to be around when I do non domestic big critter cutting) with a full exposed hilt.
Only one I almost got was the saber grind 16 that popped up a while a go, I tried to get a few but they went bye bye before you could say bye bye.

So the tan version is a bit rougher than the black version. I can try to compare to other pieces later but don’t have a lot of time at the moment.

Here is a pic of the black next to the tan with a bk15 with the rougher finish. The tan is in between the finish of the black bk18 and bk15.

thanks for the side by side picture ... the finish looks just a bit rougher but not a great difference ... I'll have to give it some thought whether to try the bronze version to strip or stick with a black one.

Nice pictures gt, thanks for the comparison.

Its not a big loss not getting the extra set of scales as weve been getting two sets with the other tweeners, a lot of us have another set or two laying around.

Im considering getting the bronze 18 and swapping those scales and sheath with the black. Other beckers may be a higher priority though... need to get a 62 at some point
