That is a very interesting hawk, beautifully shaped head. How is the head fastened to the haft?
Very neat.

Robin

Hey Robin.
It's actually a Fokos or Mountain Ax. It's basically a walking stick/Ice Ax/weapon combined. It's 38 inches long and has steel gauntlets running through the head attached by bolts and attached also to the haft.

Here's a better picture of one from the same maker as mine.

I like that a Lot, very neat. Ya can't tell me that you have that much snow in Florida though ;-))) We are currently being hammered with our first big winter storm. I may need your ice ax to get out when it stops ;-((.
I love the profile from the top. Thanks for the pics.

Edit: Neglected to mention, Thanks for sharing the images of all the
fine hawks, axes and knives in this thread.

:)

Doug that Winkler is amazing! Thanks for posting

I had this made for me a few years ago from Ron Leuschen of Little Hen Knives. Unfortunately it got beat up a bit during a move from Texas to Michigan, and hasn't been oiled in a while.

My design, O-1 steel, curly maple haft. I was inspired by the Magua hawk from Last of the Mohicans for the haft, and the head is just something I came up with. The inscription is the Ojibewa word for Grandmother (my Great Grandmother is Chippewa), Nimishoomis.

This is a GREAT thread. It's telling me I need MORE hawks. Although we just had nearly 5 feet of snow so maybe a shovel should be my next purchase. ;-))
