Official Pen Knife Review Thread

I think the knife got here yesterday, there was a slip from the USPS in my mail box. I'll go pick it up today!:D
 
Sorry I haven't posted yet but I plan on using her tomorrow. The etching is really cool and is really "in" the blade! I'm going to have to learn how to do that some day!

I tested the hardness with my file and it is quit hard in the belly and softens a little towards the cho just like it is supposed to be! Looks like the tip took a little hit at some point as it is a little blunted and there is a small crack at the bolsters like most of my khukuris have. The finish is still almost new and seems to be holding up really well! This is one stout knife and I'm not supprised by this and I can't wait to put her to a little use as I'm sure she wiil perform just great!
 
I talked to Heber and he is not quite ready for me to send the pen knife to him. I think he is sick so hopefully he will be feeling better soon and put this cool little knife to some use! Tomorrow I have a tone of card board to cut up so I;ll post how she does in this test!
 
Sorry I'm late again! I cut up a bunch of card board about 45 minutes of constint cutting. To be honest I had a lot of trouble cutting the cardboard!!! When I went to cut it the edge just wanted to "smash" the cardboard and didn't want to slice through it, it was very hard to cut and not fold and smash through it.:confused: If I really focused and caught the cardboard in a swinging/slicing moation the belly would cut it well but if I didn't it would not cut the cardboard. This is the first khukuri that I had trouble with cutting cardboard and I think know why. The edge between the belly and cho is extreamly blunt and is really not even sharpened and is about as sharp and not quite as wide as a penny's edge. This could be fixed but would take a lot of time to remove the metal it would require to make that part of the edge razor sharp like the belly already is.
The pen knife did chop wood far better than most other other knives in this size range and I don't think I have to go into detail about that as you probably know what I mean!:D
The etching is really cool and held up well as you can not even tell the knife was used! I think Heber is feeling well again so I'm now sending it off to him! Have fun with her Heber!
 
Almost forgot! Thank you Dan (Pen) for setting this up and giving us the honor of using the mighty Pen knife! It was alot of fun and this is one cool little knife that is now on my "To get list"!!! Thanks again! :D
 
Chris, nice review. Yes, I'm doing better, so you can send the knife on over. If you have not sent the knife yet, please send it to the address I just emailed you. My mom is moving soon and I don't want the Pen knife sent to her place cause it might get lost.
 
I have not sent the knife yet. I want to sherpen her up a little first. That is one thing I forgot to mention, the knife held it's edge very well, at least on the belly where it was razor sharp! I'm just going to touch it up. I did not get your new address, can you send it again?

I've noticed this phenomenon on several khuks. It is a bit of work, but well worth the effort, to get that part of the blade razor sharp.
To speed up the process I start with a good file and then switch to a diamond hone/various grits of sandpaper to remove all traces of roughness left by the filing. The edge of my Pen Knife, from cho to tip, will shave quite cleanly and effortlessly.

Thanks Tohatchi. That's what I needed to know. I'm just wondering whether it was gonna make it here while I was recuperating from surgery and it looks like it will.
That's okay. I have plenty of chairs and high stools to set on while testing the Pan knife.:)

Sorry, guys - it actually makes 2 stops in CA after Heber's done...then it's your turn, Tohatchi.

Yvsa, you're looking at about 4-5 weeks until it gets to you (provided everything stays on track).

We got kinda sidetracked a bit...:rolleyes:
 
Erik, I know you're anxious to play with it. The pen knife that is...;) But it goes Heber (wildmahn), Steven (im2smrt4u), then to ME...Tom (shappa) then I get to mail it to you in NM. Then Yvsa gets to play with it last before it heads home to Pendentive.

Yep, I'm going nuts waiting too.
