SpyderNation [knife club] “A Web of Spyderco Enthusiasts”

General Information

Alright, So we are a few days away from coming out with a Sign up thread along with a Requirement fulfillment thread and I believe it’s time to come out with some general info regarding SpyderNation, what it is about, who can join, and what is expected of its members. I am FCM415 and I am onboard with the process of developing this club from an idea into fruition along with 9Blades and BladeChick 777 and with plenty of contributions from many others who pitched in ideas as well as votes.

Inception:
Forum member 9Blades started a thread inquiring if anyone would be interested in a Spyderco club. When I first read it, I was like yeah whatever. After reading a few positive replies which included ideas for group names, I threw one in there also. The thread began to gain momentum, and next thing you know it, I was in the thick of things all into it. Its reception has been quite positive and plenty have shown their interest and support.

Group Name:
We ran a poll to name the group. There were plenty of great ideas, but we can only have one. The winner by popular vote was rejected because it was realized that the name may be out of place. We still honored the poll however and your votes counted for something. SpydercoNation it is.

Purpose:
The most asked question so far has been, what is its purpose? “What’s the point”? You wouldn’t want to be a member of something pointless right? In its simplest terms, membership recognizes you to the rest of BladeForums as a Spyderco enthusiast, one who like their products and are a friend to the brand. Folks who like contributing and help people out on the forums are ideal traits to have for this club. Concerns have been voiced over the possibility over the group taking a more unfavorable direction, something which we will further discuss down below.

SpyderNation is a fan based club and is not connected to Spyderco in any official way. I felt compelled to reach out to Sal to see if we can have his blessing in creating this club here on BF. He has given it the green light but I surely do not want to let him down by defacing Spyderco’s reputation as a class act. Your reading into how Sal goes about with his business should start with this: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/473877-Questionable-tag-lines-amp-shiny-footprints. It would be more a benefit to Spyderco for us to be a positive force, and feel that becoming a negative force will defeat the purpose of this club in which case I’d rather see it dissolved. Having this club open is a privilege and not a right on BF and Sal along with the mods can shut it down at any time with no warnings. Spyderco does not “NEED” a club and will do fine without one.

There will be no leaders in this club, and having one would just be too funny (other than Sal and Eric which is entirely honorary at this point). There will be day to day issues the club may have to deal with which is why I am proposing one or a few people at a time to be charged with the oversight of the club. We will dub it as a “troubleshooter”. Anyone (presuming you got adult sense) has a chance to be one. How it gets decided is up in the air for now, I’ll edit it in. I volunteered with helping organize this club and hope that my “turn” is done once we reach our goal of getting this really going.

Oh God, Not Rules!
Well unfortunately, these are necessary. No one here is out to dictate what you can do, but you must understand that if you wish to have Spyderco in your sig, you must hold yourself accountable for your posts and stay consistent with how Spyderco’s reputation was built upon (see shiny footprints sticky linked up above). One thing is clear, RESPECT IS PARAMOUNT in BF with OR without a club. To quote Sal’s email to me, “Honest, humble, and sincere works well”.

Code of Conduct and Rules Draft (subject to change if necessary):
1) Respect is PARAMOUNT on bladeforums. Treat each other with respect and practically no issue will arise.
2) Openly criticizing other brands and/or clubs is absolutely off limits. Discussions are part of the game but know when to stop. Membership may be revoked if you start acting all weird.
3) No gang mentality, Cronyism, and Elitism in this club PERIOD. We are here to share our enjoyment in knives, and discuss them AND help others. We are IN-clusive. This isn’t some click like high school. It’s easy to join and everyone (who has adult sense) is welcome.
4) In a discussion, even if you feel that you are “fighting the good fight”, you will not convince anyone who already has their own mind made up. Chances are most people agree with you anyway, leave it alone.
5) Know that being part of SpyderNation makes you an easy target to criticism as you are a member of a group. For example, if there is a heated discussion about which knife is better X brand or Spyderco, your opinion will be taken with a grain of salt. Just sit these out and laugh.
6) Self policing really is key, but if you witness another club member having difficulty with their people skills, unless you know them, do not contact them directly (might get them upset at you) but do let a troubleshooter know if you feel it is necessary. Sounds like snitching right? Well if we want to keep this club from getting closed down, we have to take necessary steps. Don’t act the fool and all will be good!
7) There are no stipulations against being a member of multiple clubs. Turning your sig into a colorful mess is entirely up to you.
8) Have fun, this should be number one, but awe too late. May add more boring rules if needed…Oh yeah:
9) Membership is a privilege, not a right.

Well there ye have it, if you are ok with these conditions, then we have a club number waiting for you. Just not #0000 because it is mine. HA!

Like I said Sign up and Proof threads will be up separately in the coming days but here’s the General Requirements to join:

1) Must own at least one Spyderco
2) Have at least 50 posts on the Spyderco sub-forum. This is necessary because we want participation! 50? pshhh that’s easy. So get going on your LOL filler comments(Kidding! Do try to positively contribute).
That’s it… But as previously discussed on the alpha thread, exceptions will be made at an as per case basis. Generally, Basic or above members with 5 years of membership on BF but do not post often at all and find it difficult to reach 50 posts, may be eligible to skip #2 requirement. I’ll be charged with deciding who qualifies or not for now on the Requirements thread when it comes out. I wont be out to turn anyone down so let me know your case. Also, Spyderco.com forum posts, count into the 50 subforum posts.

This is all for now, any dialogue regarding SpyderNation can continue on in this thread for now.

Also, feel free to contact one of us through PM regarding any other concerns you may have.

so how do we sign up? and do you need to be a bf gold member? if not.. can i grab #4 or #0004 or whichever way its being done?

A few numbers have already been reserved but as of now, for logistics purposes, reserving numbers won't be held until the sign up thread goes online in a day or so. Hang tight... Also, it would be wise to become a paying member if you want to join since I believe you cant have a sig without being one.

I love spydies, over 90 percent of my knives are spydies but I don't think I'll be an asset to the group because I usually say what I really think. I won't be joining because I usually bring disrepute to any group. :D

Anyway, good luck guys! All the best for the group!

I respect your honesty and envy your number of Spydies!

Thanks FCM415 for spearheading this, I know how long it can take to write that up in a logical manner, and appreciate your time.

Very awesome guys. Do I get a little credit for coming up with the name? There were so many good ones though. ;) I'm in! #17 please?

Your the man FCM, I was ready to post something super close to this, but you saved me all that typing lol. I don't think I could add anything to it.
To those whom it may concern: Basic, Gold, Platinum etc... membership is NOT required but if you wish to display the group name in your sig you need to be a paying member.
9blades I think it was, has a list of numbers and members that have been reserved, but that may change. If a member doesn't meet the requirements we cannot hold their number to be fair to others. To be the most fair we probably shouldn't hold any number. I would really really like number 03 though :D lol.
Yes slicey I think this should be a sticky, definitely the sign up thread should be.

FCM415: How will we go about the proof of a spyderco? Just a pic of one? I don't really think it should be that big of an issue as if they have the 50 post min. then they obviously like spyderco enough. If you feel they must prove though, then have a pic of the knife with something written on paper saying like "I uphold the rules of the group blah blah blah I am [BF USERNAME] blah blah" With their knife/knives they wish to display in frame.

Good morning,
My name is Josh and I have been Useing and collecting Spydercos for about 15 years.I am a working man so I can appreciate a working mans knife.I am a hunter and a fisherman and use Spyderco knives for such purposes.I also collect sprints and others that I think are neat or unique.Spyderco is by far my favorite knife company and I really cherish and apperciate all the Spyderco knives that have crossed my hands.I hope this Group takes off and look forward to interacting on this board with all of you..

Best regards,

Josh AKA salmonkiller

Nice to meet you Josh. I have been collecting for 3 years now since I discovered spyderco. being very young though I do not have much money to spend on knives. Therefore I only have 3 right now. My spydie wish list is growing daily though. They started my obsessoin with knives. I had knives before but Spyderco just started everything for me.

Cheers,
Swoop AKA Swoop03 :D

I will definitely apply for becoming a Spydercitizen. I'm Oskar and I've collected knives for about five years now. I mainly use them for camping and hiking and whenever I need a knife for mundane tasks. I have 9 Spydercos and 3 Byrds so far. I'm pretty sure I have enough posts in the Spyderco subforum even though I don't know for certain how many I have, but either way I have more than 50 in the Spyderco.com forum.

You'll be good to go Doc, just look out for the sign up thread coming in a few.

Hey guys,

I've been mentioned already, but I'm Jessie and so far I'm the only girl in the group. I'm 21 years old and a Spyder-fanatic. I own several knives and the great majority are Spyderco. I have 8. =]

I also have a Spyder tattoo.

My number has been picked and I bet you can guess which one it is.
I'm not going to have the signature because I'm not a paying member and I choose not to be.

However, I've been a paying member in the past and I'm pretty sure everyone knows me as a Spyder-Knut.

As soon as the sign up thread is up for us to post pics and such I'll post a picture of all of my Spyders, even the one on my neck for those who are interested in seeing it.

Welcome to the group and have fun with it.

If FCM415 doesn't post the official SpyderNation thread for our discussions, pics, questions, etc. I will. That way the members of the group have a thread where they can talk to the other members of SpyderNation.

- This will be done after the sign up thread is posted and such.

I guess I did not realize this was an introduce yourself thread. My name is Nathanael (please not Nat, Nate, Nathan etc.). I am 27, been into knives heavy for about two maybe three years. My wife thinks I am crazy. I pretty much only buy Spyderco now, have a few from another brand I occasionally get excited about, but Spyderco is it for me. I might become a paying member so I can proudly say I am a Spyderco fan.

I respect your honesty and envy your number of Spydies!

I respect his honesty also, but I insisted that he join the group anyway. He is a welcome contributor who makes his posts count. Thanks for letting me convince you Singularity35 and welcome aboard!

I guess I did not realize this was an introduce yourself thread.

Me neither lol, I really meant it to be an Intro for the club and General info regarding it. But if you guys want to do it like an AA meeting, that's ok too!
