Paypal debited me for a sale I made, and shipped. My mistake was to ship it by Media Mail, and not put a tracking number on it, the buyer made a specific request that he did not want to pay a high shipping cost, he mentioned media mail. Well, the cost of the auction was 10 bucks, he paid the ten bucks, I only got 9.41, then Paypal debited the full 10 bucks! What's more is, I won a fairly expensive auction last year, never received the goods, and Paypal never gave me a refund! They even told me that the case was closed, after about a week! No tracking information forwarded to me, nothing. I am still going to stick with eBay, and will continue to use Paypal until my money runs out, I don't even know if I can use the site, because I just tried to pay for an auction I had won, and it wouldn't let me complete the transaction! Just money orders for me from now on!

No comprende, I'm lost on your $10 dollar deal. $10, 3% is 30 cents = $9.70. Where's the other 29 cents that took you to $9.41? Anyway, they took their fees from the $10 and then (this is where I'm lost) "debited the full 10 bucks!"?? Help a brother out, I can't follow...

 I was paid ten bucks for an auction that I had sold to someone. They paid me the ten bucks, but I only received 9.41, after Paypal took their cut. Paypal contacted me, saying that the buyer had not received his auction. As I had sent the auction by way of Media mail, I did not have a tracking number. After repeated attempts of replying to numerous Paypal emails, this morning I found out that Paypal had debited my account for the full amount of ten bucks, when I only got 9.41. I'm mad that it even happened in the first place, but when they took more than I received, that just makes me even madder, especially the poor service I received when I was screwed over last year.

OK, got it, thanks. Hard to know what to say about Paypal/Ebay. I remember reading all the fees/rules before I sold anything on Ebay, and realizing they were making a butt-load of money. I can't say I ever felt ripped off, because I knew what I was getting into before I started. My recollection though, from having done a few refunds, was that they refunded the entire amount to the buyer (the $10 in your case), but only debited me the amount that I actually recieved from the sale ($10 less fees). If it was an actual refund, they should have refunded your selling fee, because you didn't sell it.

Paypal does do some strange stuff. I've had problems with them also, but for international transactions there is little else to use cost effectively.

Some foreign banks charge as much as $25 just for a check from out of the country to clear. Wiring the money is out of the question.

The small fee paypal takes is quite good when you compare it internationally, but here state side they are not as needed.

Here recently I purchased a knife from a custom maker and paypal used my credit card instead of my primary bank account and I didn't notice it until later. It was my own fault for clicking pay before checking over the details but when I inquired about it they said it was a security measure and they couldn't tell me why.

They aren't perfect but they do serve a purpose. Chances are you'll miss them but hopefully you'll get over it and you won't miss them that much at all.

Did you ship to a confirmed address? One thing with PP, they are very clear that if you ship to an unconfirmed address, then you are SOL if anything goes wrong, if you did ship to a confirmed address, I don't believe you are required to have a tracking number and they are supposed to deal with the problem without you losing any money.

I will never ship an expensive item to an unconfirmed address, unless I know the buyer well. For small amounts, I take the occasional risk, and, I am happy to say, after using PP a lot, and I mean a LOT, I have yet to get screwed.

Hi there
As a buyer outside the US it would be hard to function without Paypal. My bank charges $25 for International MoneyOrders or direct transfers to overseas accounts. This on top of the ruinous rate they use for calculating the exchange.
Paypal may suck but it works for me as a buyer.

You're not alone in your woes with Paypal: http://www.paypalsucks.com/

Despite the rather inflammatory-sounding website name i find that website to represent their points well and doesn't engage in bashing or anything of the kind that its name might imply. You might want to check it out to learn more about the ways Paypal has to scam you out of your money ("scam" being my term, not found on that website).

"Confirmed Address" has nothing to do with this type of claim. If the buyer claims that he didn't recieve the item (and the purchase is one that is backed by some form of Paypal "insurance", either purchased or part of the sale by virtue of over 50 feedbacks), then Paypal requires that the seller prove the item was sent by some form of tracking. No tracking....and the guy claims he never got the item....and you just lost your sale amount....regardless of where you sent it (even if you sent it to the confirmed address and cannot prove it).

I went to paypalsucks.com or .net, whatever the name of it is, and I was surprised that this is a common practice. They better not charge me again, I just changed all of my eBay auctions to only accept money orders. Wow, Paypal just lost a great customer, too bad for them.

Oh, BTW, I tried again to pay for an auction that Paypal said I needed a credit card to complete the transaction, even though I have money in my account. I deleted my credit card and bank account from their system, if they try to charge or debit my accounts, I'm getting a lawyer.

Nick7, I learned my lesson, from now on everything gets a tracking number.
An easy way to do this at a bit of a discount is to open up an e-account with the USPS and to ship Priority in the free USPS box.

If you ship Priority ... Electronic Delivery Confirmation is free, so shipping and confirmation is $3.85 total. Plus you can print Priority labels (with postage) on your home printer ... slap it on ... and never have to darken to door of the PO.

I lost 500 USD due to PP. They locked my account for no reasson and even though I provided all info they requested I still cannot get the account open (and withdraw the money). They s.u.c. k and they are thieves. :barf: :barf: :barf:

I don't see the problem.

The guy paid $10.00 for the knife and paypal took their cut so you got $9.41.

You shipped something by "Media Mail" that wasn't media. (A knife I assume?) The Post Office discovered this and tossed your package in a pile in a back room somewhere.

The guy asks for a refund and paypal gives him his entire refund of $10.00.

You're out your knife that you shipped illegally and 59-cents, so you blame Paypal and will never use them again. Did I get everything right?

;) F'o'L... I wasn't going ot point that out... just that anything that weighs over about a pound ends up being shipped in the "Priority" category... ie; anything with postage over $3.85 IS now known as priority...

As to Razz's statement... AFAIK... any kind of confirmation costs extra no matter where you purchase your postage... so that $3.85 only covers postage... confirmation is extra... but... I could be wrong... it wouldn't be the first time...

That's the way I see it.

I've been using them for years with no problems.

Hi Joe,

To get the freebie, all you have to do is open up an online USPS account, download some software and you're in business. The confirmation I'm talking about is the USPS electronic delivery confirmation that they normally charge something like 50 cents for. For now, if you ship priority via their website it is free. Check it out. I've done it 100's of times.

I don't know if the USPS stole the package or not, it was a comic book, not a knife, it falls under Media Mail guidelines. I realize I fubar'd it by not including a tracking number, but I was paid ten bucks for the item, Paypal took their cut, the buyer said he never received it, I had no proof to back myself up, and Paypal took the entire ten bucks, after I only saw 9.41. If you don't see a problem in that, that's not my problem. Good for you that you have had good service with them, they've screwed me over twice, third time is the charm, and I will not use them anymore, I pay eBay to use their site to sell products, I wish I didn't have to pay the listing fee or the commission, but I think it's only fair that they should be compensated. I pay a fee to use Paypal, I wish I didn't have to, but it is a commercial site, and I also think it is only fair to pay a small charge to use their services. I just don't like the fact that I was overcharge on my account, that I was treated rudely by a buyer, and that this ever took place. I've heard too many stories of people losing lots more money, so I figured, what the hell, money orders take longer to get to me, but at least I will not have to put up with Paypal. I try very hard to provide good customer service, but I can't control the USPS!
