Oh dear... Bear Grylls at it again

No, you dont like him because you cant stand to have someone new on the scene. and i am not a fanboy i just dont see the point of going on about afew mistakes some guy makes on his programs, pathetic.

Not a few mistakes, but shameless lies (it's not the lying what insults me, but the fact they make it like it's for real. I don't have problems with Jack Bauer because that's clearly fiction, not an "I'll show you how to survive!" program), and dangerously stupid and bad advices all the way.

I don't have TV, so I haven't become a fan of any particular TV survival people. I don't really know who all is in that scene and so I don't have anything invested in "keeping out the newbies." They're all newbies to me, because I only watch TV a couple of times a year. I do know that when I've caught an episode or two of "survivorman" I thought it was pretty good. I don't care if Bear wants to use cheap knives - they probably aren't any cheaper than my $10 moras.

Anyway, I finally went and watched an episode here on the internet. WTF???

I don't care about cheap knives or any survivor's club. What I care about is that he says (at least in the one episode I just went and found on the internet) "I'm going to show you how to survive. These are the skills to survive. My mission: to teach you how to survive."

Man, this guy is an idiot. Never clutch at branches when descending a slope because it might be a snake??? He's a pretty good climber, but for a guy who is supposed to be teaching us something, he is doing everything wrong!

I think this would be a good show if it started out with some guy saying "In this week's Freak vs. Reality, we've dropped the guy in territory x, and we're going to watch what kind of bizzare plan he comes up with, to see if he can get back to our trailers."

What bothers me is that it's being presented seriously. Also, I don't think I can take any more of his "I'm speaking dramatically" voice.

I can't stand this guy. Time into episode: 17:31. Status: deleted!

I think that last time I watched Man Vs. Wild I heard Bear say: "I may not be good a wilderness survival, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night."

I have no idea. But here is his knife.

I like the sheath, all the squared off edges on the handle look like they would be uncomfortable after a while and cause hotspots or blisters.Chris

whats the point in picking on him? tell me. what because he uses cheap knives? because he puts himself at risks? because he eats animal raw?

He doesn't use a cheap knife. (www.bayleyknives.com/bear.htm) His credibility is now at stake because he MISLED people on a TV channel that claims to be EDUCATIONAL! Deliberately misleading the public is not making mistakes...it's lying dude. Okay?

Actually if you do an ebay search you can find the "Bear Grylls" knife by Rob Bayley selling for $600.

Idiots.
Try $700 dog, that's what it breaks down to in the currency exchange rate. You'd think with all that you'd at least get comped a free night at the Holiday Inn somewhere!

why cant everyone leave bear alone, he hasnt done anything wrong,
ok hes different to ray mears but then dont we need a change from time to time. Cant everyone find someone else to pick on.

The guy is a liar and a fraud.

A better question is: why would anyone defend such a person?

Edward "Bear" Grylls....nice nickname, as the original teddy bear was called an "Edward Bear". Probably got the name from his reservist unit...Oh, sorry, I mean the 21 SAS TA...

TA means he was a reservist for 3 years...yet another of his lies. And how did he get frostbite in both feet while on a commercial Everest expedition??

A charlatan and a chronic whiner...our "Teddy" Grylls

As a person who has taken survival courses and read most of the top authors on the subject, I agree completely with the 'bad advice' link. I have watched in horror as Bear brainwashes his ignorant viewers into doing the absolute WRONG thing! Things that can get you killed.

Let's see, 10 out of 10 top survival instructors all agree on several aspects of survival. Bear suggests the exact opposite on many of them. Who is right?
Hmmm.

One of the reasons I like Survivorman is because it is real. The man loses sleep, gets dehydration headaches, celebrates small victories-like making fire, tries to stay dry and generally suffers.

Bear climbs slippery waterfalls, [yeah right], chases lizards in the desert heat, jumps off cliffs for no reason and generally has a good time.

Survivorman= The Octagon
Man vs Wild= Pro Wrestling

Re-read the link amiga posted, it really is exellent. If you can still defend Bear after reading through that, I cant figure you out.

bearcut nailed it!
Les is... human... he gets hurt, he gets afraid, he celebrates. Bear rarely seems hurt and if he is its gone by the next scene. I saw the new season and he opted to climb a cliff instead of spending the extra 2 or 3 hours to go around. Now some poor bugger is gonna be in a similar situation see a cliff and go "hmmm, bear did it - I just need to use my legs and keep three points of contact..."
News headlines the next day - man falls to death while attempting to scale cliff.

Then again I love watching this stuff than the crap that finds its way onto my TV.

The point is that there is no other way to get back at him for trying to pull a really huge fast one his audience - us. So people ventilate. There's nothing wrong with still being outraged. What he did was outrageous, and his shows all got pulled for several weeks until he made them a bit more "honest" or at least more transparent.

If you aren't a fanboy, and I have no reason to doubt your word, then you are perhaps a bit behind the curve, to put it delicately. Maybe I have the cure. There are several sites dedicated to enumerating specific deceptions from the shows. The best, IMHO, is this one.

After I read this I changed my tune about Bear. I spent quite a lot of time going over this site, and I suggest you do the same. Then you might begin to understand why a lot of people relentlessly trash Bear, and why he deserves every bit of it (and more), IMHO. Knowledge is power.
