Just for grins I'll try to keep the whole shebang under $50.

Alox Swiss Army Classic for $23
Kershaw Injection 3.5 for $14
More Craftline for $13

Not my first choice in any category, but all good, solid blades.

Let’s see here I’d go
Case 6375 Large stockman CV $45 or so
Kershaw Dividend $40
Some sort of Buck fixed blade the 119 or mesa $40-50.

I don’t have many knives right now I think it’s 15 not a single fixed blade or really any budget knives that I carry. I try to sell before buying and staying under 20.

Since everyone else is throwing in their higher end choices I’d go
Hinderer XM-18 Spanto
Case Tony Bose Warncliff Trapper or Stockman
Esee 4 if I had to get a fixed blade

1. Shirogorov 95 "T" patteren dark blue - M390 blade - titanium handle - MRBS
2. Koenig Arius "Style 57"
3. CKF Kadat (Alex Vorobyov, M390, Titanium, Zirc, Timascus)

First of all, I have to loudly object to this arbitrary 3 knife limitation. That is a blatant violation of the constitution's "more is better" clause, as well as the pursuit of happiness.
But rather than getting into a supreme court hearing on the matter I will reluctantly abide by the criteria set forth. Under protest!

I too will see if I can produce a $50 all inclusive budget, if only to show congress how it is done. ;)
Prices are my last prices paid.

Dress knife - SAK Army Classic SD $13.80
EDC - Kershaw Hotwire $9.87
Fixed blade - Old Timer Lil Finger $17.65
total $41.32

And that Wash DC, is how you keep within budget!!!
From dressing out a deer, to opening packages and daily cutting chores, to clipping loose thread from mi'lady's dress, these three will do it all.

I doubt I could put a better list together with my more expensive, more preferred blades if only because I could not pick out just 3. No way, can't be done.

EDC - I've got more than 6 in my rotation. Top 4 would be Kershaw Atmos, CRKT Ruger LCK, Ontario Rat 2, and Kershaw Hotwire.
Dress knife or Gentleman's knife - WAY more than 3. Top contenders are Northwoods Norfolk, Opinel 08, AG Russell Lightn' Bug or Gentleman's Pen knife, Boker Plus Panatela, Kizer Feist, Puma IP Armino, Kershaw AM-3 or Squaw Creek, Case Peanut, Lionsteel Roundhead.

Fixed blade - Definitely can't be done because I require 2 fixed blades at the very least. One conventional hunting knife and one Bird and trout knife. I currently own at least 20 bird and trout knives and 30 fixed blade hunting knives. Fixed blades were my first knife love. And you want me to pick just one....
For a B&T I would probably have to say, my Horsewright / Dave Ferry Sonoran Belt knife. Though I don't know how I can not take my Menefee 16 bore, My Arno Bernard Maribou, or my Moki B&T as well. Got 2 more that are inbound that may make the top list as well.
For a conventional fixed blade hunting knife, My Buck 102, (first sheath knife) Cabela's Boker Tree brand hunter, Boker El Trampero, Companero, or Rancho Madera, Benchmade Saddle Mountain Hunter.

Pick any one from each of the 4 groups and I'm good. But still wishing I had all the others. :D

I might look silly with my lack of knife knowledge and silly taste in things, but I'll try;

1. Dress Knife would maybe be one of Case's Mammoth-Scale Trappers
2. EDC would be a Case Russlock
3. Fixed blade, I'd definitely go with some sort of hand-forged boot knife.

This is an easy one:
1. Large CRK Insingo
2. Spyderco Delica
3. Vic Alox Rancher

BTW these are the three in my collection that see the most carry and use.

if I were limited to three knives ... that in itself says to me don't go cheap or "budget" but get 3 good quality knives ...

so there wouldn't be a "dress" knife ... one of the three would have to do for dress along with EDC ...

1. SAK Farmer or Leatherman Wave
2. Could be any of a number of models from ZT ... Spyderco ... or CRK
3. since it's only one fixed blade that would be my Carothers HDFK ... it could cover the majority of tasks big and small.

No way I would go cheap if these were my only three knives ... budget to me would mean 3 that would perform any and everything I would need them to RELIABLY.

Victorinox Cadet for light tasks / tinkering

Rat 1 in D2 for heavier tasks

Rat 3 for everything beyond that

Honestly, I could own these 3 and never need anything else... but I WANT everything else :p

For $50?
1: Vic Alox Solo $20
2: Opinel nr8 $10
3: Mora $10
I would put the remaining $10 down towards a new Lionsteel.

Note to self: Move some knives to the storage in the garage for safekeeping in case of a house fire.

You and I seem to be on the same page, my friend.

My brain tells me that the Pioneer/Soldier is better than the Cadet but I seem to prefer the Cadet more and more. Not really sure why. I think it's easier on my nails.

As for the RAT 1, my daughter's is the only one I've had my hands on and I was impressed. I like the RAT 2 but it's a little small.

Hi Everyone,

I have recently been thinking about what I would do if I had to start over on my knife collection. Say, like I had a house fire or something.

What would you get? So, let's say three budget knives. A dress knife. Another as an EDC folder, and a fixed blade of some sort to round things out. I'll let you define the term "budget."

I was thinking the following:

1. SAK Cadet
2. Rat 1 with D2 steel
3. Maybe a RAT 3 or something in the Ranger series from Ontario Knife Co.

What about you? What are your ideas? Would you pick up three better knives later on, after the dust settles? If so, what and why?

Well this is easy for me since I only carry 3 knives at this point.

1: Victorinox Cadet or Spartan Hardwood
2: Spyderco Delica ZDP-189
3: Spyderco Endura ZDP-189

I'd just rebuy the same knives I already carry.

I've tried plenty of others and continue to try some here and there... I always come back to these.

If I was broke after a fire or something and couldn't afford the pricier Spydercos I'd just start with the Vic and wait until I could. Maybe picking up a VG-10 Delica for the interim.

With all the knives you see and handle, you have not found anything you want?

With the insurance, I'd rebuy a GEC scout with fancy covers, an Al Mar Sere 2K, and a Busse Basic 9.

If I HAD to go budget, I'd get the nicest Case stockman I could afford, an Opinel, and a Spec Plus Marine Combat.

No, not really. The blade stocks are all too thick. Nothing out cuts my Endura or Delica.

I really like the Sebenza, but I'm spoiled by the ZDP-189. The Sebbies, comparatively, just dont hold an edge well enough.

I have found myself ogling some William Henrys recently. Nobody ever sends them in for sharpening though so I haven't handled one.

Within your parameters:

1: Black Alox Cadet - $18
2: Mora 511 - $10
3: Byrd Cara Cara 2 Lightweight - $22

It's just the budget version of what I already carry.

The black cadet IS my dress knife. It's perfect. Handy, lightweight and handsome.

I have Moras scattered all over the place already. They're great, cheap, high performance blades.

The Byrd Cara Cara 2 lightweight is the budget version of my current EDC: the Endura and is a great knife itself.

Neat little $50 package.
