OH Vic Farmer??

Hey guys,

Just got back from a camping trip and my Vic farmer saw lots of use, but there’s times when I only had one hand to open the knife. So, I could buy a OH Trekker, but I don’t really want the serrations and don’t really have the money to spare. So, I was trying to think of a way to make the Farmer a one hand opener; all I can come up with is grinding a “wave” in the blade near the tip and grinding the other tools around the “wave” down so that it can grab my pocket for one hand operation when needed.

So, what do ya think? Good idea, bad idea? Got a suggestion for some other way (someone has to have another idea)?

I know I could just carry a OH knife, or fixed blade, and the Farmer (which is what I did all weekend), but it’d be nice to just carry the one knife.

the farmer is definately one of my favorite SAK's... i do agree with the fact, that it would be cool to have it open with OH...

i have an OHT, but it's just a little too big to EDC for me... i also didn't like the serrations at all, so i had scibeer ground them down for me...:o i took him all of 5 min... and it came out great... looks like there wasn't any there to begin with...

I ground down the serrations on my OHF and put a convex edge on it, took about an hour with hand tools. There is a one hand sak mod on SOSAK, a sort of notch was put above the tip so it could be opened on the rim of a pocket.

Yeah, that’s what I was saying above. Got a link or pic? I’d like to see how it was done.

Just a general FYI, but they're supposed to be coming out with a plain-edge OHT sometime in the near future, I believe.

I got an email from Swissbianco saying there would be a plain edge coming soon. There will even be one with red scales, and a corkscrew instead of the philips.

I wouldn't change a thing on the farmer model. I think it's perfect just the way it is. I carry mine on a lanyard in my pocket.

My one hand knife is a 550HG which will probably be clipped into my cargo pocket or a 110 in a pouch on my belt, both are OH openers.

Just one knife, scarey thought! Two is good.

i agree with collecter, have another knife for one hand access...like a fixed blade or a folder with thumbstud, spydie hole etc.

i would be wary of trying that mod on the farmer, because it could render it nearly useless for anything but the knife (grinding down the other tools) and the knife blade might get in the way of some cutting tasks with a hook near the tip...

Wish they made the orange alox farmer.....I think a OH version w/o the hole, and a stud, and a pocket clip would make it the perfect knife.

if you carry your farmer on a lanyard tied to your belt, you can one hand your knife. Hard to describe. The lanyard has to be shorter (not much) than your extended reach. Grab farmer by the nail nick on the blade, pull out. As the lanyard reaches its limit,it will pull the knife away from the blade.

Any idea how long before it hits the market?

I’m not talking one knife for everything when I go camping, just for when I’m hanging around camp (I don’t care for full pockets and crap hanging off my belt all the time, especially around camp when it’s unneeded).

I don’t know about rendering the other tools useless, I’m not talking about removing a lot of material, just enough to expose a little more of the blade at the point at which the notch is cut into the blade. It should have no effect on the other tools performance.

The problem with this is it limits the reach of the knife once open unless you “drop” the knife by your side unhook the lanyard and then you have a full range of motion with the knife. In that time I could just find a way to free up my second hand (stabilize my work or whatever) and just use two hands faster.

Maybe drill a hole in the blade where your thumb will be, like a spyderco hole but smaller, then put a zip tie through it or a leather string with a big knot, or even a small bolt and nut.

Thats an interesting idea Liam. They are cheap enough that I might have to do some tinkering...

I don’t know how well this would work; if I were to drill further up the blade where my thumb is, it looks like anything I’d feed through the hole would interfere with the saw opening and closing. That's why I was think of adding the “wave” down towards the tip of the blade where it’s thinner and more exposed then the other tools.

J Williams let us know if you try this mod, I’m curious if and how well it would work.

Like I said before, I’d like to avoid spending more money and buying the OH Trekker (although it’s looking like the best option), so thanks for the ideas, keep them coming:thumbup:

I said it was hard to describe, but the lanyard should be as long as your reach. you wouldn't be able to switch hands ,but anything in reach of the hand the knife is in, will get cut. use a continous loop, pass through key ring of knife, loop thru itself and do the same to a belt loop on your strong side. lanyard in my case is a little less than three feet long

Will do bro. Im gonna look at 1 of mine and see if I can figure something out, that wont interfere w/ the saw...

Sorry, I must have missed the part about the lanyard length:foot:; I was thinking a foot long at most for the lanyard. What do you do with the excess cord? Do you just put it in your pocket as well? Or, hang out of your pocket by your side?

Sounds good:thumbup:

I had a farmer model for years. It was stolen or lost can't remember which hadn't been able to get one through any local stores. Fi naly found one tonight online. I will have to order one now as I too think it is the finest model they make.

What did you cut that you needed to cut one-handed? The reason I ask is that you can open the saw on the Farmer with one hand and no modifications.
