Oiling your RAT

My RC4 has seen some tough work of late. After a good sharpening and when its going to sit for a bit, I use mineral oil to void rust on the very edge of the blade.

Do you all lightly oil the whole blade? Coated part and all? Or just the very edge? (exposed steel)

Thanks!

I have yet to oil any of my RATs,I always have my Izula and most always RC-3 or 4 on me,the couple of times I saw any oxidation I just start shaving down on a piece of 2x4 or a tree branch. and oxidation gone, but If I had to store any RATs for some time I would put some sort of inhibitor on the expoised steel.

I always clean my blades up after use. Every one of them. Stainless, carbon, doesn't matter to me. I clean them all, as I get to spend more time with my blades

It is only necessary to oil the edge as the coating protects the rest of the blade.

I use mineral oil now, I put a VERY light coat the entire blade after use.

This is VERY important, expecially if you have used it in the rain.

I've just used to Tuf-Cloth on mine and it seems to work really good. I'm in central-northern California with about no humidity so keeping off rust isn't to tough here.

Na.

I use all mine so they're just going to get rusty again.

I strop them to get the worst of it off and put them away. If I'm going to be out for an extended time or using a carbon blade around water I'll wipe it down from time to time with olive oil.

I decoated my RC-4 a while back and still keep it oiled when its not in use, but don't really do anything in the field. Just clean it up when I get back. However, recently I just forced a black patina on it using an overnight vinegar soak. So I should have less cleaning up to do...Regret removing coating? Yeah..... :)

Is a Dri-lube good to use? I've used Rem-oil(light) with a cloth worked well. I heard about a Dri-Coat spray any Idea's on that?

Whenever I use my RAT's in the kitchen, I clean, dry, then spray with olive oil and wipe down. Works so far.

I used a cold blue(paste) on my bravo 1, It applies easy, looks good and offers some protection from rust. It holds up pretty good.( the kydex sheath is rougher on the finish than batoning through fatwood.)
recoating is no more difficult than cleaning a sap covered blade.

Thanks. There is a knifemaker locally here, Rick Marchand, who does a neat bluing/bleaching treatment that produces a strongly etched and distinctive patterned patina. I may do something like that to my RC-4. The vinegar patina needs more work to it, but this is a using knife. You are right that kydex does tend to put scratches on the surface.

I use all of my blades, RAT or otherwise, and I clean each and every last one after every use. All of my knives get a few passes on the fine sharpmaker rods and then a wipe-down with the tuf-cloth before they're re-sheathed for any period of time.
